One thing that does not get mentioned a lot is the lack of experience in the coaching department when Knights was appointed. There should have been a senior assistant but the most and only senior man was Gary O'Donnel. The rest where rookies. At that stage we where about having $2 million in the bank and doing things on the cheap.
I think there was truth in what both Matthews have had to say. Knights was right in saying Lloyd wanted to keep doing things his way but Lloyd was right in saying Knights just did not have the experience to fill the Essendon role at the time.

Sadly we may not have been talking about this if people had been more on the ball during the next regime . The Knights era was always going to be a rebuilding phase and a lot of his plan for the whole football department did actually move us forward. I remember commenting way back when that Knights being coach did not phase me but it would most likely be the next coach who reaps the rewards. It should have been that way but the club let Mr Dank in and got what it deserved for not looking into his back ground.

Now here we are almost back to where we where in 2010. We had had a coach to steady the ship and now we are looking forward to a new era. Mistakes are no longer an option.

This next half a decade will be telling as to whether we have learnt from the mistakes of 2011-2015, both on and off the field.

Recruiting and talent acquisition mainly due to bottoming out in weak years. Our system is good enough to suggest we’d be successful if we had multiple top 20 players in the comp like all great teams do.

To make finals three times since this all blew up cannot be overestimated. Other clubs a saga like this would knock them out for a decade. Just to make the finals in 2017; a year after the players weren't even playing is absolutely remarkable.

With all the restrictions, changes of coach, and the trauma that the players and their families suffered I think their efforts have been heroic. Its problematic to criticise Essendon (on field at least) the last few years.

It also helps to have players that enjoy football enough that they become positive football players. Talk about culture, coaches, and so on, all fair enough, but effective players have a desire to play and learn and getting a whole team to be that way is what makes finals. It’s the joy of the doing, there is no other reasons as to why people get good at something, also, practice, that’s it.

Not a bad video, light on for details I thought though.

It was a weird time for Essendon following 2000, you had the retirement and comedown of the success we'd had through the 90s and early 00's, followed by the departure of Sheedy. Any coach following Sheedy was going to struggle, and I think Knights' wasn't the right person for the time - albeit I didn't mind him as a coach as much as some others.

We got caught out with the nature of the competition changing in the mid 00's that teams like Geelong, Sydney and Hawthorn very quickly got their houses in order whilst big traditional clubs like Essendon and Carlton didn't.

We have high expectations and limited patience, some bad luck in terms of high picks not working out - e.g. Gumbleton, who wasn't the wrong pick, but injury cruelled him - or not having the players available in years we had the picks. Patrick Cripps where art thou.

I don't know why people think the Worsfold - Rutten thing is a bad thing, if both are on-board then I think it's by far the most professional way to handle a coaching transition. Caracella and Townsend are what I would call intelligent acquisitions. Poaching the fitness guy out of Hawthorn who have a strong track record with managing injuries and appear to always be around the mark with conditioning.

I think the path we're taking is a positive one, we appear to be getting quality people instead of just Essendon people.

It's a hard one. I started mid 70's, ****ing deplorable, but being young I loved it,knew no better. Knew I was sick of copping shit at school off coll, rich, haw fans etc. Talking about school, I have people I bump into who go " Johnny, you old prick, you're the reason why I follow Essendon, you took them all on" ....haha, funny shit.
No.1 reason of why we have reverted back to 70's embarrassment, employing hird as coach. Didn't agree with it at the time, in his defence, didn't expect the shit storm that followed. But he should've gone to another club to see how someone else does it. Christ that was arrogant, by both him and the club.
Check my old posts, he should not have gone retirement, media, us. So ****ing arrogant.

Lol.

You take any chance you get to bag Hird. Even before he was coach.

I thought Lloyd said it well; at the time they had put Hird in charge with Thompson for support it appeared OK and sensible. Hard to predict what followed; Hird getting caught up with Robinson & Dank, along with Thompson being an ice addict. A truly bizarre set of circumstances where at any number of points one thing going differently might have prevented it.

Haaa, please bring this little gem up. Unless you're referring to Davey's sons.

there's too much she'll be right attitude IMO

playing train like they are having fun - dont train with a game day attitude.

i don't see the hunger. haven't seen it for 10+ years

As much as I love Sheeds he stayed on too long. He should have left after 2001 and let the club rebuild. He insisted on playing the old guard which had the ultimate effect of scraping into the finals a few more years but not developing the young guys. Also playing guys like Houli out of position which disgruntled them. I want to cry every time I see him in a Richmond jumper.

(Not so) Fun fact.

No premierships in the 1930's, 1970's and now 2010's
It seems very 40 years we go through a decade long premiership drought.

Good thing is the 40's and 80's had multiple premierships won in that decade - So we're due!

Nothing would be more fitting than Essendon winning the 2020 premiership in the most controversial season for decades. Imagine the sheer level of outrage on BigFooty.
