Yeah she said that Sports Management type jobs will be opening up a lot more in the next few years as the Government want to get more money into sport etc. Apparently the Sports Management courses at Deakin have received great reviews. She said it's best to go to the open days though to find out a lot more information and ask people who actually do/have done the courses.

I'm studying Business - Sports Management at Latrobe and i am loving it.
I was sceptical about going to uni 'for the sake of it' but when i saw this course i saw the opportunity to study my passion - sport.

The course at latrobe is interrelated with Melbourne Heart FC so there are a lot of volunteer opportunities throughout first and second year and in third year work placements are sorted out. places like Melbourne heart, regional footy teams, media organisations (like SKY) etc. are the most popular places.

But my point is, i think this is a useful uni course as you more than likely get something out of it immediately.

What do you perceive your paid career prospects to be when you finish?

How many people are doing your course at La Trobe?

I think some sport management roles are very well paid.. and it can lead to general managment opportunities too. I think there are only around 100 doing the course at La Trobe

Sports Management is probably the lowest paid industry in the country. I don't know any other sector where people with a uni degree earn less than 40k.

THe people who go into management also come from the private sector and not sports managemnet.

Well you know i'd rather earn less in an occupation I enjoy than work my life away at a job i can't stand.

considering the cost of living of this country that's a eru naive thing to say.

People in your situation will end up working on a mine site after you realise you'll never own a property or go on holidays etc on that income.

Not the most convincing argument against studying sports management.

The more convincing argument is your previous one: most successful sports managers are likely to be people that can handle contracts and negotiations - namely lawyers. So the odds of getting a meaningful position (one that you'll enjoy) as a result of the course would have to be quite low. As with anything else though, if you have the contacts and can network, there's a chance.

Haha dude wtf....
'oh hey i'm going to go on forums and try and make people feel bad about the path they have chosen in life.'

Mate i know it's miserable in London but lighten up.
None of us are looking at you wishing we could be as tough and as well versed in the knowledge of the world as the almighty saviour.

In fact you just come across as a prick.

I don't think he's intentionally trying to be malicious. It's not only degrees where grad supply far outweighs job demand. Just make sure you don't get complacent about finding a locked up job when you graduate.

FWIW though I think you'll have to make the best of your work experience opportunities, get good grades and network well to land a decent job when you finish. The competition out there will be pretty tough, especially given how small the sports management industry is.

It's good that you're passionate and enjoying your degree so far. This is something that I would've liked to have had a crack at, but I was too much of a nit to roll the dice & ended up going with what I perceived to be a safer option.

Good luck!

Hi I have a question, I have deferred from deakin sport management this year but i would like to change courses to the sport science/sport management course. is it possible to change courses whilst in a gap year and how would i go about it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

People who work in sports managment will end up doing nothing more than controlling memberships for 38k a year. There is nothing wrong with studying sports management but there certainly is with working in it. GOt a mate top of his class at ECU and worked for the dockers 50hrs a week for sweet f**k all essentially almost below minimum wage. As someone mentioned earlier networking is of paramount importance in this industry.

Also if your going to work for nothing might as well go live in another country. IF you don't earn a good income living in Australia is really tough and essentially not worth it. Most people I've seen who studied sports management or sports science started working in the sector at the start but then eventually moved on when they realised that nothing good was ever going to come from it.

The industry here is very similar to Lawyers in America. Long hours, hard working, no rewards, little money. You would have to be crazy to consider a career down that path.

I'm 20 and looking at starting a Bachelor of Commerce next year.

Major either International Commerce, Marketing or HRM.
Advice?

I am majoring in HRM at the moment...both are a piece of piss, so so easy with minimal work, just choose the one you find more enjoyable after you do the core basic units of the degree (you will have to do management, marketing, economics, accounting, stats basics etc usually before you major) :thumbsu:

Depends. Did you defer directly after high school? That is, you haven't completed any study of your current course at Deakin. I'm interpreting your post to mean this.

As a result, the easiest option is to go through VTAC again and simply apply for the new course that you want to study. http://www.vtac.edu.au/

The alternative is to transfer through Deakin. Typically this requires around a 70 average over at least 4 completed units (normally 8 units). This is really easy to do at Deakin and they fully support students transferring internally. Unfortunately, if you haven't completed any units, this will be tough to do. My advice is to call the Faculty of Business and Law on 03 9244 6555 and speak to them (or email: enqblm@deakin.edu.au) to find out if it is possible.

Which degrees are useless/useful?

Unless you are using the course purely to eventually gain entry into something else, (other than perhaps stuff like engineering) pretty much anything that's on offer from ECU from what ive heard.

After hearing friends and family members horror stories of admin stuff ups and seemingly 'highly industry regarded' degrees (only in the eyes of ECU staff it would seem) getting them absolutely nowhere, its sickening to see the annual mid year ECU media bombardment now focusing on pumping up its equally 'highly regarded' post graduate courses.

Its a disgrace that after already stinging people once, these sausage factory technicians are now seeing an opportunity to sting likely the same people a second time with the same garbage promises.

not an ECU student here myself but what and where are you studying out of curiosity?

From what I remember basically I don't believe it and I think your bro is telling you lies. For someone to have completed units then rejected back into the course is just ridiculous especially at a University such as ECU. I'm going to put it to you that your brother is full of shit and probably failed a few units a couple of times and thus why he hasn't been allowed back in.

Whats wrong with ECU? Many police in Perth get their qualifications through the uni and you should be happy that this uni gives them the opportunity. I know plenty of people from ECU who have done really well in Perth and overseas just like I know many UWA, Curtin, Murdoch and Notre Dame grads who have been successful.

Once you have completed you degree your experience and ability is all taht matters not where you went school. Even some people careers such as Law are overrated when it comes to "prestege" it's all about marks! As a career police officer I don't understand how you could know this?

Cheers.
