Grand Finals
AFL Club
Port Adelaide
Other Teams
Team Rafael Nadal
Current Era:

Federer
Nadal
Djokovic
Murray
Soderling
Roddick
Isner
Del Potro

Previous era:

Hewitt
Roddick
Ferrero
Guga
Safin
Henman
Johansson, Thomas

Question: is it more difficult to win a slam now compared to the last era? would roger federer or rafael nadal find it easier to win a slam in the pervious era or the present era? so the question is: which era is more difficult.

no brainer- Current era. I see Hewitt is the leader of the pack (previous era). Compare that with Federer, Nadal who are leaders of the present generation..its easily the current era.The whipping boy has always been Djokovic, i can guarantee people Djokovic will win more slams than Roddick, Hewitt and Safin combined. He is a bit unlucky to be against a peak Rafa and Roger but still has done well IMO.

Interesting on face value you would say the current era. But yet you only have 5 Grand Slam Winners and really it has been dominated by 2 players

In one instance we could be saying the current era is harder, yet you only have 2 players who are consistently winning / making finals.

In the other you say the previous era is weaker but you have more players who have won / finaled in grand slams.

I'd revisit in 3 years and see where we are at and whether the likes of djokovic, murray, soderling, del potro have it in them to win multiplie grand slams or final consistently.

Players (Grand Slam Titles / Finals)

Federer (16 / 22)
Nadal (9 / 11)
Djokovic (1 / 3)
Murray (0 / 2)
Soderling (0 / 2)
Roddick (1 / 4)
Isner (0 / 0) [really .. Isner??]
Del Potro (1 / 1)

Previous era:

Hewitt (2 / 4)
Roddick (1 / 4)
Ferrero (1 / 2)
Guga (3 / 3)
Safin (2 / 4)
Henman (0 / 0)
Johansson, Thomas (1 /1)

Another note is, out side Federer and Nadal, the current era are mentally inept. In terms of fighting qualities and mental strength give me previous era any day. Has there been a more pea hearted player on tour than Djoko???

I'll see your french two and raise you Djoko. So much talent but just no fighting qualities at all ... has retired in 3 of 4 grand slams and Davis Cup.

Andy Murray - very talented - no self belief.
Del Potro - talented but ???
Soderling - An "A-" ... very good but wont win a grand slam

Djokovic has won a slam, as well as two other Slam finals. While, I agree he shows a lack of heart and mental fragility quite often, he's no way near the standard of Gasquet and Monfils.

Agree with the comments on the others. Really, Del potro looked the goods but I think injury is always going to be an issue with him sadly, must be rapt that he's got that US Open title at least. Really don't understand why Murray doesn't back himself more.

One thing you're forgetting is that Federer was part of the previous era as well. He was a top 20 player in 2001, top 10 in 2002 then in 2003 when he won Wimbledon he then had the confidence mentally that he never had previously that has made him the player he is today.

Also the previous era list, they're all Grand Slam winners. And you've forgotten Albert Costa, Gaston Gaudio and also Guillermo Coria who were all top clay court players. Of the current era players, Murray, Soderling and Isner (don't know why he's ever on the list) haven't won a Grand Slam.

they are nobodies on non-clay surfaces, hence i didnt name them. They are clay court bullies. On the other hand Murray has made multiple slam finals, deserves to be out there, if it wasnt for federer he would have won a slam by now.Soderling the same too, however beating rafa at RG is still a significant achievement.

no self belief doesnt get you to 2 slam finals.Sorry mate gotta disagree.Djokovic should have won multiple slams but again when you are against roger and rafa the best of all times..its kinda difficult dont you think? thats why i think i would give andy roddick the points as per Nerdys post.

Andy Roddick would have close to ten Grand Slams if Roger Federer wasn't around.

Lleyton Hewitt would have five or more as well.

Even Juan Carlos Ferrero would have 2-3 more.

you can say that about novak djokovic.Should have won 4 atleast if rafa or roger wasnt around yet people call him a battler

Nadal and Federer have only ever had to verse 1 champion in each other. Look at the list above me in the 90s. I'm just glad Nadal didnt come along any later than he did for Federer.
High hopes for Del Potro though.
