Not sure how you reach that conclusion.

I don't even know who the top 4 will be.

Adelaide should be top 2 from here and Geelong have a fixture that basically sets them into top 4 with a series of soft wins.
Collingwood are struggling and Brisbane have work to do still. Gold Coast can finish top 4.

Actually think there are definitely 9 chances still.
More speaking in terms of quality. GC is the only real dark horse outside the 4 imo. Hawks Pies might be the biggest match to shape the top 4 and 8. If the Pies lose to the Hawks and Crows and beat the Dees they'll be 5th according to my predictor. GC should go in faves in their remaining 4th which would have them finishing 4th.

I predicted all the favourite outcomes for the remaining rounds with margins that seem most realistic except Hawks beating the Pies (have a hunch they will), and somehow Gold Coast finish 4th, Collingwood finish 5th and Freo miss out on 9th.

Unless hawks beat pies this week or Brisbane at the gabba they are going to finish 9th with all the favourites winning. Best chance is this Thursday v collingwood, hopefully they can do it.

It is not just either/or
They actually need to win both.

It is still plausible that it will require 16 wins. Bulldogs can win remaining 3 and get to 15 with the best percentage and still miss finals.

Yeah if they're not good enough to beat those two they aren't a real flag threat anyway, so it isn’t their year. That's the perspective I'd be taking as a supporter. Don't worry about the draw, other games etc, if we're good enough we'll beat who we need to. 2019 we somehow choked away top 4 and a chance to go back to back for the first time.

As a 'neutral' (I won't be neutral this Thursday!) I more just want Collingwood to lose than Hawthorn to win. Pretty sick of the same 4 clubs (Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney) up there.

A Collingwood Geelong grand final won't be fun because I really don't want either to win.

15.5 wins or better is the only 'safe' place to be

So mathematically even Adelaide can still miss finals
I think even the worst possible scenario would have Adelaide finishing 8th because of their percentage. Barring something ridiculous like them losing by 200 to Eagles and Roos.

But yeah with their draw Cats and Crows should be 150%+ by the end of round 23.

Of the last ten grand finals, just three have not featured them:

2021: Dees v Dogs
2019: Tigers v Giants
2017: Tigers v Crows

In fact, go back the last twenty years from today and it’s still only three grand finals!

2004: Lions v Power

Geelongs game in Sydney the following week is a potential banana skin match for the Cats. Lose that and probably will miss top 4
I'm not 100% sold on GCs ability winning away from home either- they should be beating Carlton and Port is their last 2 but could easily see them dropping 1

Yep, thank God it's not like European football leagues (I don't know why anyone would support anyone other than the few teams that dominate, even then that would get old)...yet, but most non fans of those clubs don't want to see that, if their side isn't contending.

I disliked Carlton and Essendon the most in the 90s when they were good, but if they rose back again into contention at least they could break droughts, and give younger fans some joy. But no, all we have is Collingwood this or that. Not proposing any equalisation, if theyre good enough fairly (I've been vocal about umps, but that seems to have changed for them lately), fair enough, and not saying every team must win it regularly, but it gets tiring seeing the same old.

Yes a plucky Sydney could upset them. Somehow Cats have Richmond again, feel like they had them just a month ago? What's with the same matchup within such a short span? Makes no sense to me.

Gold Coast and GWS are so unpredictable. They've been better away this year than last, but still drop easy ones. If they're serious about finals they should be giving 100% and smashing all their remaining games.

Except they play each other next week!

Did Geelong finish 18th? Their draw seems ridiculously cushy. Meanwhile somehow the Eagles get a tough draw for finishing 17th.
Richmond twice in the last 8 weeks is the only complete howler. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the game knows teams in full rebuild run out of steam at the end of the year. That was ridiculous fixturing.

Otherwise on paper at the start of the year port and the swans in the last month looked challenging but it hasn't turned out to be.

That problem is eminently correctable too, but they refuse to do a 17-6 fixture with the last 6 weeks only fixtured when all teams have played one another once

Yes they should play every side once before playing double ups, common sense. I want to just see a true rolling fixture too where side a plays side b the same number of times over a period. I don't care about traditional matchups always being played twice a year. So say, in a 10 year period we shouldn't play Freo 20 times and say GWS 12 times or whatever. We should play both 16 times, 8 times at home and 8 away.

That won't happen. Geelong's soft draw has them more focussed on how many goals Cameron will kick rather than getting ready for finals.

Brisbane are the one - they just bat too deep. Adelaide flying. Pies stumbling but will come good.

Hawks to miss sadly. In hindsight the hawks draw was very hard will all of Gold Coast, Freo, Adelaide and Brisbane (still to come) away. Hawks had a chance to win all of the GC/Freo/Crows games but didn't. If one of them was in Melbourne maybe Hawks make finals. It is really only the Port loss (also away) that is a bad loss this season. Oh well - tough year to make it.

Yep it isn't the Hawks year, but I hope they keep battling on...for one more week at least. Collingwood finishing 5th would be too funny!

I've maintained that if we are good enough we'll make it.... the hard way suits us & is why we're successful

Very competitive against GC, Crows & Freo away - ahead at 3 qtr time in all. Need more talent though to really push up again - some good learnings this year if we miss which we probably will.

Day out has crushed my soul

Between 1955 and 1991, in peak paper bag/chequebook VFL, there were ZERO Grand Finals not including Haw, Rich, Coll, Ess or Carlton.

There's your origin of the self-appointed "big clubs" right there, so I'm not shedding any tears that they're bitter that Sydney or Geelong have a bit of a run.

Hawks have been good, just one really good mid short. A fit Day would of made a huge difference. Still can make it though, but probably not really challenge this year
