I know Lance dropped off a bit in the second half of the season but who would you rather have in your side at the moment? I would pick Lance over Joel in a no contest decision. Joel is talented but imo has no where near the class or influence of Lance. I am basing this on present status and not basing my opinion on relevant longevity in the game.

Bowden does get a lot of touches off half back and creates lots of run for the Tigers. Lance plays more like a quarterback and sort of mops up in defence. Would have been pretty close IMO between the 2 of them, although Lance's quieter second half of the year would have hurt him in the end.

As carlton people we are very loyal and will say lance any day of the week. We love him. Just the same for Richmond fans about Joel. But both have their own positives.

Joel racks up more disposals (albiet cheap ones often) and gives alot of run and drive through the middle.

However, Lance takes the bigger contested marks (as well as the loose ones he reads well) and can also be moved up forward if we need a spark up there. His brains make up for his lack of pace.

At the end of the day what separated them was the fact that Joel had a much more consistent year overall, and the panel will go with that every time.

Your all biased Carlton supporters!!

Joel Bowden offers a bit more than big red. They are probably just as tallented as eachother, however Bowden has good mobility and Whitnal doesnt.

Bowden for me. Sorry fellow blues supporters.

Richmond ranked 14th in defense this year. One of their major probs.
I don't think Lance should have got in because he dropped away (to being very good, down from sensational) in the second half of the year.
I don't think Bowden should have got in either.
He is a good attacking defender - but his prime job is DEFENDING. I know the above stat reflects on the whole Richmond backline, but IMO Bowden doesn't stop his man well enough - just hurts them when there is a turnover. As a defender would have had Tex in ahead of him, because he worried about stopping his man first, then attacking.

Bowden by a country mile...........Whitnall's form deteriorated big time during the second half of the year.

Whitnall form dropped in the 2nd half of the season and i did have Bowden in my AA side
And to the question who would i rather have in my side today and beyond Whitnall or Bowden , that's easy Bowden , the game really got quicker this year and Whitnall is slow and getting slower by the minute

I'd say Bowden. I thought Whitnall had a good year, but padded his stats and got more credence than he deserved because he spent a lot of the year playing as zoning-off type defender. He was perfectly suited to this role and did a good job, but wasn't all-australian standard.

Bowden basically took on the role of the primary defender for Richmond this year, played a prime defensive role and simultaneously created a lot defensively. I'd say given the level of difficulty and risks involved in doing that, and given the superior win/loss record of Richmond, that he was a better player this year. That said, I only saw Bowden play about 4-5 times, and 2 of those were against Carlton where he did a good job on Fevola, so my thinking might be slanted in that regard; I saw Whitnall play enough to see his bad games as well as his good
