I think the reason behind the extra space behind the Barkley street goals is a pretty simple one. Its all a question of using the available playing surface in the most efficient manner possible.
It allows for more room directly in front of the indoor training space. Bringing the boundary back 15 metres into the middle or changing the perimeter fence to fit the perimeter more closely would only reduce the usable surface area of the ground. In my view this allows for players not involved in match sims and the like to still have a sizeable area on which to train. Which despite VFL and WAFL games being played there is its primary purpose.
Or the architects were drunk and nobody noticed until now.

surely they keep that as useable grass - apart from that the rest looks great
