So... Who misses out?

For mine the emergencies are: Clancee of the Overflow, Zaaaaarrke and Colin Hay Sylvia.

as much as I believe in giving first chance to the incumbents I will be disappointed if Sheridan or Neale miss out after their pre-season.
Already think its a bit weird that Sylvia gets a trip home over Crozier whose pre was much better. There was some thought Croz was injured so maybe thats it.

I've already knocked up Sheridan a big banner that I promised to him if he was in the round one team.

Would hate him to miss out after training the house down all preseason and play some good NAB Games.

Croz didnt train Mon and ran laps today so going on the evidence he is injured:(

Also everyone who watched the Peel game except Salim though Sylvia was BOG so his preseason hasn't been that terrible.

Nick Rynne is reporting on Twitter now that Sylvia will be named as an emergency so I guess he got some info from Lyon at the airport.

The guys in the thread about the game had a different opinion. I suspect Sylvia could kick 10 goals and you and Salim would give him a C- though.

6 - Colin Sylvia. Started very slowly in attack and at half time I was really diappointed, wondering if we had got another dud. The second half he went into the middle and he was a different man - hard and tough in the clinches and looked classy with the ball.

Colin Sylvia - Played as an inside midfielder. Not the best first quarter. Strong in congestion, didn't look unfit. Probably the best Freo player on the field. 8

Morabito in a class above todays mob, made my day 8/10
Sylvia started slow went onto the ball and played in and under role will be good back up 7/10

pretty much the only guys who bagged Sylvia in that thread were the same guys who have been bagging him since early February.

I don't have a bias against Sylvia. I reckon Barlow, Fyfe, Mundy and Walters are the only mids / forwards that I would have as untouchable at this point. I wouldn't be upset to see Colin push out any of the others.

Fwiw, here are all of the Bigfooty posters reports on Sylvia from the scratchie thread except mine.

There were also news articles saying that he didn't look to be that flash which I can't be bothered finding.

3q time.

pt 8:9 leads perth 3:5.

quick obs:

Sylvia relatively quiet ( I need a bloody team sheet and binoculars). Could be okay, hard to tell.

Sylvia was OK but with his pedigree should have torn it up

The second half he went into the middle and he was a different man - hard and tough in the clinches and looked classy with the ball. I would say he is still a way off playing firsts, but showed enough to encourage me.

I kept looking for Sylvia for most of the game, and couldn't find him most of the time (on each of those occasions I was following the ball, ...and he was rarely on it).

Would see a great bit of play from a blond mid or forward and think 'ah there he is'.. but almost always it was another peel player.

He did pop up on occasions and when he was in the midfield, he looked most impressive. He's definitely an inside mid more than a forward for my money.

To be honest, if I was going solely on *today's* game, I would say that Josh Simpson was far more exciting than Sylvia. The times when Sylvia shined was when he was on the ball, digging it out and banging it forward - those were the times when I thought "...yeah, maybe."

Sylvia started slow went onto the ball and played in and under role will be good back up 7/10

I was disappointed with Sylvia I must say as this was his opportunity to shine.

I reckon Silvia will (or should) play then. When no certain starter he should play WAFL, think he needs a game this weekend.

The same for Clarke. Think at his stage it would be stupid to make him a travelling emergency.

They are both named as emergencies according to Nick Rynne, but Sylvia is more likely to play than Clarke as all the guys under injury clouds are smalls (Fyfe Ballas D Pearce).

Lyon's Lore 101:
The Team Picks Itself
Reward For Effort
Work Your Way In etc...

These are just meaningless motherhood statements IMO. Clancee Pearce has had as bad a preseason as anyone yet he is in the squad. Past form counts, regardless of what people here might believe and what Ross Lyon might tell the media.

He's in it to win. Winning means more than "integrity of selection", and he will pick the team that he thinks has the best chance of getting 4 points, regardless of who appeared to "deserve it more".

Every coach loves to say that nobody's spot is guaranteed and all spots are up for grabs because that's the best way to motivate people. But just like the mum who tells her kids how handsome/pretty they are, it's not always true.

I mean even Ballas mum probably told him he was handsome. She lied.

I understand what you mean about Sylvia being a known quantity as opposed to a new draftee, but what weighs against him being a sub or playing this game is the fact that he has done nothing all summer but build his fitness base to be close to par to our guys. Being an older player with more pre-seasons under his belt, this probably only makes him slightly behind our younger brigade in terms of fitness, but what the young uns have is actual experience playing the game the way Ross wants it played.

D Pearce was doing match sims with us pretty early in pre-season, so it was less of a stretch to find him in the team in round 1. Only way Sylvia play is if any of our incumbents don't get up.

Out of our grand final 22, 21 flew. Clarke v Hannath will be 60/40, Hannath more likely to play Fwd/ruck. Clancee for Suban at half back. One of Sutty or Sherro will be sub, one will start. Sylvia to be among the emergencies for this game. Maybe sub next round. My two cents. ;)

I quoted everybody. He quoted whoever suited his argument.

I left you, Salim and Harry Reems out because you've been bagging Sylvia since the first NAB challenge game so I don't expect an unbiased opinion. I left Gecko out since by his own admission he didn't even see Sylvia so it's pretty hard to judge his game.

You know there is an ancient saying...

"He who questions the wise words of Ross the boss has already lost."

I'm not questioning his wisdom. Obviously he knows what he's doing. I'm saying he's telling porkies, as all coaches do.

Go ahead and quote me where I've been bagging you out Colin.

That's not true. Sylvia has been running laps a fair bit but he's also played 2 preseason matches and has joined in the main group on numerous occasions.

I think a lot of people overestimate how hard it is to "learn Ross' game plan". It's just a forward press, it's not like we are using a different shaped ball or anything.

Yep. Just a forward press. Have you watched the game looking strictly from a strategic view? The game plan is not just a forward press. It is about pressuring the ball carrier to get the ball into the opposition player you want. It is a TEAM effort to create the pressure and opportunities. It''s about forcing the opposition to constantly take a pass under more pressure than the last. It's about letting them switch into the parts of the ground that you want them to go. It's about forcing stoppages to utilise our best assets. It's about everyone on the team knowwing the roles of most around them (Mayne needs to know where to go to plug the hole) just as Clancee or Ibbo need to know where to go i the forwardline.

Serious question -

How long you reckon it would take the average footy player to learn to play a Freo style plan coming from a Melbourne style plan?
