I'm pretty sure pressuring the ball carrier is a strategy that all teams use. Not unique to Ross Lyon. The main difference is that Ross insists on doing it all the way down the ground, hence the term "forward press" since "defensive press" is redundant and "full court press" was already taken.

How long you reckon it would take the average footy player to learn to play a Freo style plan coming from a Melbourne style plan?

About 2 weeks.

You're quite brilliant, Shane. It's not just about the pressure it's about dictating play.

If it takes 2 weeks, how come Melbourne (or GWS or GCS) didn't implement it successfully last year after 2 weeks. Surely these teams would have implemented a strategy that stopped floggings (and won games).

I don't think it did really. We won 5 of our first 7 games under Lyon, and lost the other 2 by a combined total of 31 points.

Sorry but nope.
There was a pretty adequate term used on us then, what was it? Oh, "unwatchable".
To be honest, fair comment.

Just watched RTB's interview from the airport. He was quite clear that Sylvia has picked up but is "behind a couple of in form players". But it's still possible that he'll play.

For what it's worth, I personally feel that he'll play for us somewhere down the road. He'll be "unwatchable" for a while, then he'll figure out the game plan and come good down the stretch.

These are just meaningless motherhood statements IMO.She lied.
Many modern individuals have Mum problems;you may well simply wake up one morning and they're gone.
What is altogether unique and startlingly obvious about RTB's gameplan is its simple deception and correlative deception in simplicity.
Forget forward, full court, defensive, sliding or tidal press;RTB executes with a basic strategy as he always says "Chase the pricks 'til you get the pill then kick it."
Here he mumbles his way through another interview:

I think you are falling into the same trap as many Victorians who assume our success is purely because of Ross Lyon and ignore that we were a pretty good team before he got here (although ravaged by injuries).

Lyon isn't stupid, he took this job because he knew we had a good list. If he went to GWS they would still be last.

I like Ross Lyon but some people here attribute superhuman abilities to his coaching that just don't add up. Before he came we had a good list with a shit coach and had 12 of our best 22 injured for most of the year. Now he have a good list, relatively fewer injuries and a good coach, and are getting the rewards. Ross Lyon's methods are less revolutionary than you think.

Stupid question - So I'm thinking of going to a shopping center (Southland/Cheltenham) that has tickettek there, well actually it's a concierge desk, whatever that is. On the website it says 'pre-paid collection outlet' does that mean I can only pick up tickets, or does it mean I'm still able to buy tickets there? Would be awesome if I could just buy a ticket there, rather than having to get to the game pretty early on Friday and hope tickets are still available.

Is pokerspiv and Wigarus the new clay vs JungleMuffin/bushie vs the world?

Yep. Just a forward press. Have you watched the game looking strictly from a strategic view? The game plan is not just a forward press. It is about pressuring the ball carrier to get the ball into the opposition player you want. It is a TEAM effort to create the pressure and opportunities. It''s about forcing the opposition to constantly take a pass under more pressure than the last. It's about letting them switch into the parts of the ground that you want them to go. It's about forcing stoppages to utilise our best assets. It's about everyone on the team knowwing the roles of most around them (Mayne needs to know where to go to plug the hole) just as Clancee or Ibbo need to know where to go i the forwardline.

Serious question -

How long you reckon it would take the average footy player to learn to play a Freo style plan coming from a Melbourne style plan?

How can I possibly take it seriously when you use such a blatant oxymoron?

You can buy them there. Pre paid collection outlet just means if you bought then online and want to pick them up then that's where you can go. More important for things like GF tickets where you have to pick them up

That's not true. Sylvia has been running laps a fair bit but he's also played 2 preseason matches and has joined in the main group on numerous occasions.

Apologies, I have been going on what training reporters here - who have been practically on the ground all summer - and what I've seen the few times I have gone down to watch training myself. Also, based on club training reports - which I know tells us **** all most of the time, but is always quick to mention the newbies if they can as they know there is more interest around them.

Sylvia was probably trying to build a fitness base, but he also copped a soft tissue injury and likely missed his date to go into match sims.

I think a lot of people overestimate how hard it is to "learn Ross' game plan". It's just a forward press, it's not like we are using a different shaped ball or anything.

I don't refute that Sylvia is a skilled player, but I think it's well I known that exhaustion degrades skill in any field. D Pearce was heard to say last year that he was quite surprised at the amount of running we did here.

Plus, it's not just about learning the game plan, it's also about gaining the trust of your teammates in practice so they learn to trust you on the team. Surely the players are not sat down in training and made to watch Sylvia's highlight reel and told, "Hey guys, this is what Col can do, therefore if you kick it to him he'll be stellar."

The gameplan works is not because it's revolutionary, but because we have a cohesive, well-drilled team. it's because there is total "buy in" which leads to a cohesive playing group that "give great effort" and are reminded often to choose "discipline over indulgence." The boys have been brainwashed over there. ;)

The players don't need to be shown his highlight reel. They know his ability from the times they have played against him and his AFL career. They are professionals who are not nearly as likely to be as judgemental about traded players as supporters here are known to be.

Really, the assumption that Sylvia's record is wiped when he moves here is just stupid, and it won't get any less stupid no matter how you rephrase it.

I get it, really. Lots of guys here don't rate Sylvia because he played for Melbourne. Well, those people are wrong. This conversation is getting rather boring. Ross Lyon obviously rates him a lot higher than most in here since he's got him in the 25 this week despite near consensus that Sylvia is awful and will play WAFL for at least 3 months before he gets a go as a sub if Tom Sheridan is injured.

Frankly, I have tried to have a reasonable conversation with you about why I think Sylvia won't play round one and not the whole season, but you just opt to be patronising and condescending. You obviously have strong opinions about everything, but it's equally as obvious that you aren't capable of respecting opinions from people who don't agree with you, so I won't waste my time.

So basically you're saying that Lyon's gameplan is really try very really extra hard, more so than other teams. I guess that means that in the games we lost we just weren't trying hard enough and would have won if we just tried a bit harder.

If I didn't know any better I would think Ross Lyon was coaching a group of under 13's.

Go back to Dockerland.

You haven't tried as hard as you think. It's apparent in your post that you think I'm an idiot for not trusting "training reports" from the same guys who said Danyle Pearce was a crab last year.

I have tried on numerous times to point out that

a: that we pursued him in the first place despite having goalkicking mids to burn
b: he was a free agent who could have gone to any club but chose to come here
and c: was offered a 3 year contract right off the bat

As some kind of objective indicator of how highly the club rates him and where his place in the pecking order might be. But the local legends have thrown all of that out of the window because he had a quiet game in a scratch match that the club clearly treated as a joke. That is literally what most people are basing their new opinion of Sylvia on. A single practice match played in 37 degree heat that we lost by 100 points or so.

Guess what? The guys who backed Pearce in last year because of his past AFL form were right. The guys who wrote him off based on preseason were wrong. The guys who wrote Zac Dawson off were also quite clearly off the mark. Both guys have played every game they have been available for since joining the club.

So far this year, the guys who backed in Sylvia have been right too (he's on the plane for round 1 where the accepted BF consensus is WAFL all year).

Why can't you accept the obvious trend of BF Fremantle supporters being unduly harsh on players sourced from other clubs? It's happened every year for the last 3 years, and in each case, the logical scenario (that Freo went after these players because they plan to play them in AFL games whenever possible) has turned out to be true, and the jingoistic view (nah mate none of those crabs will get a game over our stupendous young blokes) has proven to be a load of rubbish.

As for Sylvia's fitness - Ross Lyon has said he's happy with it and he's good to go. Considering how most posters here feel that Lyon's every word is gospel, it's strange how few are willing to believe him on that front. I think it's just they don't want it to be true. There are a few people on this board who have got a real sook on that Sylvia is in the travelling team this week.

And what does Dockerland have to do with anything? Is that supposed to be some kind of massive insult or something? Are you 13 years old?

PM me if you need help with Etihad.

Not only that, but he seems to read what people post and interpret it however he wants so that he has something to argue about.

the Lyon effect isn't just about the game plan. Its about striving for excellence in everything, every minute of every day. Looking for tiny improvements in every aspect of the way the club is run. One of the Steves was quoted as saying it permeates all the way through to basic admin in the office where people feel inspired to be better because of the example he sets.
Thing like knowing to the minute how far each player has run since the season started, how many minutes of football they have played, delivering them to the starting line on Friday night as perfectly fit and prepared as they can be.
I know one or 2 other Ross Lyon types in other areas of life. They are utterly obsessive about everything from diet and exercise to not watching TV or reading anything that isn't useful for the task at hand. They couldn't imagine doing anything that isn't focused on improving the task at hand.
Its a whole micro world of little things that add up to being a powerful football club. Thats what Lyon brings. Not just a game plan.

The guys in the thread about the game had a different opinion. I suspect Sylvia could kick 10 goals and you and Salim would give him a C- though.

pretty much the only guys who bagged Sylvia in that thread were the same guys who have been bagging him since early February.

What part of [Sylvia was OK but with his ability he should have torn it up] is bagging him
I've just stated that he 's running laps at training and doesnt appear fit.
Thats a fact and facts are something you appear to be very loose with.

They're being sold by Ticketmaster. I went online this morning & bought a GA ticket. It'll be level 3 somewhere, but Etihad's pretty good for the nosebleed seats. And you can print the tickets at home so no need for collecting them. Only question is which puub near Etihad to go to pre-game?

So pre-game beers at Willo's then?

Sylvia will be the sub IMO.

Still kicks three. Hopefully he doesn't come on until the very minute in the 4th, with the rest coming after it's a good chance to get fitness minutes into the legs of everyone else.

But the game plan is that simple, surely any coach can teach someone in 2 weeks. Ross is no genius blah blah blah.

FWIW, I hope you end up living a happy life and see Freo win the next 4 premierships.
