Goodes looms as the big danger man for us on Saturday, he has been good in both of the games against us this year. Who can we put on him who can play a purely negative role and get under his skin??

Harry couldn't keep up
Clement doesn't have the motor
Maxwell would struggle to run with him

How did Lonie go for Willi on the weekend?? He did a brilliant job last year....would it be worth a shot?

Other options, H.Shaw, Toovey, R.Shaw, Cox??

Stop him and we go a long way to winning as we match up the rest of the swans pretty well!!

Dane Swan i reckon would go alright on him and Goodes would also need to show him some sort of respect.

Don't let Rhyce anywhere near him! Swan may be the man as has got a good footy brain and will have to be watched himself, will need help but, maybe Clarke for short spells?

def swan, goldsack needs to kill oloughlan again

need to shut goodes down obviously, the only sydney guy who always kills us

btw without ablett means buckley doesn't have a tag :D

Goldsack to me is the obvious matchup, but he has given Micky O a couple of touch ups this year, so he should stay there.

Like the Swan idea, because if Swan starts getting a few touches, Goodes will need to run the other way.

i like that hall will come back because it means they will go back to him hall-conscious all the time (hopefully!)

wakes on barry (with jimmy as a back up). goldy on micky o. heater and jimmy can share buchanan and o'keefe. harry will pick up the other tall they play down there.

if MM plays swan on goodes he will kill us. they will both run forward and goodes is smarter and will get more of it.

pendles is a good match up because of his height but ideally lonie is fit enough to come back and take him.

That's what I was thinking. Then again, if he just focuses on Goodes and we lose all his creativity inside, it'll be a massive loss. If all else fails though, it's an option.

I think if we play someone who is purely there to negate his influence on the game, Sydney will get the better of the matchup. Put someone who will burn him the other way - Pendles / Swan / Sack - in that order

I just wrote this on another thread but I think Marty Clarke may be a good match up for Goodes.

He can run all day with him and seems to have the ability to read the play so well. I think he could really shut down Goodes. Does have height disadvantage but Goodes generally plays as a running player so this may not be a big problem.

I would like to see Rhyce Shaw get a go on him. That way it doesn't take away from Dane Swans' attacking play.

Rhyce has done good jobs on Akermanis (in his prime) and Chris Judd in the past when his sole job was to limit their numbers. Rhyce has the speed and endurance to go with him for most of the game. If the Swans try to break it up and they send Goodes forward, Goodes will out mark Rhyce but that is exactly where we'd like Goodes to play rather then racking up possessions in the middle.

Agreed. Forget about Goodes' ability to ruck. He is a giant midfielder with explosive pace and an ability to run the lines. This could be a season-defining game for Rhyce.

My second choice would be to bring Licuria back.

It sure as hell better not be O’Brien after his shellacking last time. Basically Goodes is a gun and we don’t have anyone that can really match upon him if he is in form. He is too tall for R. Shaw who plays small. We will have to rotate a few on him to just keep up with him. Goldsack, Swan and a bit of Pendlebury to hurt the other way would be the way I’d go except that Goldsack has to get MO for as long as he holds him given his 2 excellent efforts on him this year. Maybe Cox could play but it would be a big risk putting Cox on Goodes. Meanwhile we have to make Sydney think about stopping a few of ours. That will be the key.

One way to beat Goodes may be to expose his defensive weakneses. I'd take a punt and play Dale Thomas on him - a player with pace to go with him, attacking flair to counter attack on him, and a leap to counter his lack of height. Goldasack is another option. Or we just get Chris Bryan to belt the living daylights out of him.

I agree he is too tall for Rhyce Shaw but Goodes gets alot of his footy at the stoppages were Rhyce could stimmy this flow. This might influence Roos to push him forward. If he does we have some good talls to cover him there(Jimmy, O'Brien, maxwell). We want him to play forward. That way he is not getting our footy in the middle.

In all honesty that is my preferred option. It would be a lot easier if Goodes rucked but then again Paul Roos is smarter than Grant Thomas and Roos doesn’t ruck any more.

Don’t mind the Thomas option either but he’d need someone else to help out. Thomas doesn’t have the engine to play midfield full time let alone on Goodes who has a huge tank. He was awesome against us. I reckon he had a hand in nearly every goal they kicked. Thomas’ height worries me as well. A Thomas and Pendlebury combination would be interesting but are using two trump cards to maybe hold one a bit. We need to curb Goodes’ influence but we need to take the match on as well.

Can guarantee it won't be Swan. He's playing with a hip injury, and only played about 70% of game time against Adelaide. He's been nursing it for a few weeks.
I'd be tempted to go with Clarke through the middle, but worry about him in the air.
Any decision made will be a gamble... I can't see him having as much of a dominating game as he did last time. I'm sure the brainstrust will figure something out.

How is H.Shaw travelling fitness wise atm??

Is he still restricted by his thigh?

If not i would throw the challenge to Heater, he can run with him and has the ability to hurt going the other way. Think Heater would be the type of bloke to jump at the challenge of performing such an important role.

Thomas, dont want him anywhere near Goodes, Thomas is one of our trump cards....looking for a similar performance to the game at Telstra Stadium where he kicked 4 and gave Malceski, who is a quality player, a bath! Thomas loves the big stage and it wouldn't surprise if he is our match winner!

let me just say, if Goodes plays like he has the past two games, it wont matter who you put on him. Having said that, he ran riot over you last game and it made not a scrap of difference in the end. he is not your problem. Our whole team needs to fire, not just 1 or 2 or 3 players. and if we do that, we'll win anyway. No disrespect to CW, but Sydneys best is better than collingwoods best IMO. BUT Collingwood will win if we dish up anything less than that.

no disrespect to the swans, but the reason we play so well against you and have such a good record against the swans is because we don't let you play to your best ability.

no disrespect received, and I fully agree with you. If you know how to shut down an opposition teams playing style, whilst playing your own, that makes you the better team on the day, and more likely than not, the winning team.
