Who won't be at Essendon Next Year

I'm a NLM fan, although I do think he can be covered.
I wouldn't have a problem if he was on the table.

The only concern I have is that he's a leader to our young Aboriginal's and we have quite a few. From all reports he's the one that gets them together, takes them under his wing, ensures they are doing the right things etc.

Could it have an effect on the group if he was gone?

As far as I'm concerned, Welsh has slipped behind NatRat this year. Not sure where Welshy's headed, doesn't seem to have found his feet; NLM is on and off but does have good patches (when fit)
He's a player that if doesn't stand up and show some strong form, then could be in a little trouble. I like Welshy and i reckon he'll stay, but he should be peforming better than what he is.
I wouldn't think Knights would give him the marching orders, just because he is developing a leadership role at the club and is apart of that age bracket that we lack and seek for experience and guidence from, especially with the youngsters. At least one of McPhee, Lovett-Murray and Welsh will probably be traded at seasons end

Maybe he's a leader of our young Aboriginal blokes, and probably adds alot of value to the playing group by taking them "under his wing",but that alone should not get in the way of the possibility of trading him.

I don't reckon it would effect the others NLM leaving. Their big boys now. They could handle it.

'Rebuild' is a stupid description, lets use 'Renovate'

Who wants to rebuild a football team? It takes years to build a decent football team!

What we want to do is 'renovate' our existing team.

From now on I suggest we stop using this stupid, inappropriate, 'rebuild' expression. It's an insult to the club and many of the current players to suggest that we need to knock them all down and start over again. :thumbsu:

But our list needs rebuilding and it WILL take years. No point trying to hide the fact that our list is ordinary and needs a great deal of work. Too many people overate our list and our players. A lick of paint and some new doors in the kitchen certainly isn't going to do the trick.

Spot on. Unfortunately its like a old house on the block. Parts of the house need knocking down and starting again.

I think you missed the point champ.

Rebuild = start from scratch.
Renovate = gets rid of the bits that don't work, keep the good bits.

We are not now or ever going to "rebuild". Rebuilding would involve delisting every single player and startign from scratch.

We might need to heavily renovate, but it's still renovating.

It has always been called a rebuild. I don't see why we should change it now. Does it really bother you that much? No club has ever delisted every player and started from scratch but it has always been called a rebuild. And in Essendons case we need a pretty damned big one!

Have some patience.

In the last 3 years, we've brought 12 quality young kids in Ryder, Dempsey, Neagle, Lonergan, Gumbleton, Jetta, Hislop, Houli, Reimers, Myers, Pears and Daniher.

We've introduced over a half a side, all of which have doubtless potential.

On top of them, we've gambled on Hocking, Hooker, Williams and Bellchambers, who could also end up adding to that list.

Our list development is on the right track, and we're destined to add another quality bunch this year.

Essentially, a great deal of the rebuilding has been done, even if it's not yet finished.

Results aren't being produced at the moment, but 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players have never been the basis of teams at the top. When those guys are 4th, 5th and 6th year players, I think we can expect big things.

We don't need a big rebuild, we need more development.

Re: Team VS Swans

Since we really need to get this seasons draft spot on. why dont we play courtney johns at centre half forward, tell him he has until the end of the season to prove himself and then make a decision on him, if he keeps going up and down like he does, he wont be any value, on the list or at a trade table. We should play all the kids, Fletcher, Lloyd, Lucas, Hille should be the exception. but the rest should all be young guns in to see what they are made of.

I get frustrated with CJ like every essendon supporter. but Key position players take time, and its hard to impress when your forever up and down as Courtney is. It took Buddy 50 games to start playing good footy, and that was because clarkson had patience in him. At essendon we have no patience what so ever.

Ummm i have plenty of patience.

Just because i said we have a lot of work to do doesn't mean i am not prepared to be patient. It just means i am being realistic.

Or why don't we play him at centre ha;f back for the rest of the season.

It makes much more sense.

Courtney Johns-very frustrating to watch
Ricky Dyson-has been mentioned for a few too many years now as an up and coming players...needs a very big lift if he's to be at the club in 09
Damien Peverill- dont think he does enough, will be lucky to be there next year.
Jason Johnson- very good servant, but i think his time is up

Suggesting drastic rebuilding I would've thought was lacking in patience with the guys we've already got at the club.

No?

How do you come to this conclusion?

Surely a "renovate" type process would be more lacking in patience.

It is going to be 5 years before we are challenging again. I have accepted this and will wait patiently until we get to this stage.

The fact is we have a mountain of work to do. It is the reality. It has nothing to do with a lack of patience.

5 years.... I'm not gonna wait that long.

We should be a challenging side within the next 2 years.

I don't think our players would even want to wait 5 years to become good, they'd probably rather go and play for Carlton.

5 years? Dont think so. In 3 years we may well be challenging for a flag. Your Hislop's, Ryder, Gumbleton, Jetta, Dempsey etc will have 40-80 games under their belt.

5 years :D

I wonder if 5 years ago you could predict that we'd be bottom 4 the past few years with Lloyd, Lucas, Hird, Fletcher in the side.

In 5 years West Coast has gone from bad, to good, to potential dynasty, to bad again.

Gotta laugh at these long term predictions. :D

Four and a half years ago, the ladder looked like this:

1. Port Adelaide 72
2. Collingwood 60
3. Brisbane 58
4. Sydney 56
5. Fremantle 56
6. Adelaide 52
7. West Coast 52
8. Essendon 52

9. Hawthorn 48
10. Kangaroos 46
11. St Kilda 44
12. Geelong 30
13. Richmond 28
14. Melbourne 20
15. Carlton 16
16. Bulldogs 14

The ladder now (after Round 7)

1. Geelong 28
2. Hawthorn 28
3. Bulldogs 26
4. Adelaide 20
5. St Kilda 16
6. Sydney 14
7. Kangaroos 14
8. Collingwood 12

9. Port Adelaide 12
10. Brisbane 12
11. Carlton 12
12. Richmond 10
13. Essendon 8
14. Fremantle 4
15. West Coast 4
16. Melbourne 4

Only Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood were in the bottom 8 both times.
Only Richmond, Carlton and Melbourne were in the bottom 8 both times.

Suggesting a rebuild I feel suggests a lack of patience with the guys currently on our list. You may be willing to be patient for success, but I don't think your displaying any patience with the guys we've already got, who I think a great number of will be the catalysts for our future success.

I'll agree with anyone that we have to continue to bring new young guys into the club, but we don't have to cut and run from the guys we've already got.

And why are you putting a figure on when we'll compete again? It could well be 5 years, but for all we know, it could be 2 or 3.

It seems you're on a pessimistic jaunt at the moment, try not to get it mixed with reality.
