Koutoufides has all the markings of becoming a great captain. The only concern would be his age; he probably only has a few years left in him. But he is the face of Carlton. He is perhaps the most inspirational out of the players you put in the poll; and the fact that he can still win games and plays very well further justifies him being captain next year. Kouta is the most popular player (and the best) in our team currently... and if he can influence games in such a fashion that we know of, why not?

I'm not too sure about Whitnall. He does show leadership and has the potential to re-discover his form. If that happens and he influences games more often, then he'll be a future captain for certain. He communicates well with the players around him and has a tactical mind; first he needs to step up. But right know Kouta to get the nod, just.

If McKay is going to captain the team in these last rounds, then he should get the gig full time next year if he plays on.

Should McKay retire, then Kouta should be an interim captain for his last two years of playing.

After that, the club will make a bold appointment based on having a long term leader and stability at the club. This will see Callan Beasy named as captain in 2006. ;)

The reason why I haven't considered Camporeale & Whitnall in there is that both of them won't be at the club next year.

Sheik, are you serious?

Camporeale and whitnall will not be at Carlton next year or are you just assuming things?

Kouta deserves the (c) next to his name and would be an inspired choice as a marketing tool and recruiting tool to entice out of contract players over. Would like to see him in that role for a year or two until someone like Jarrad Waite or maybe even Callan Beasy :)p Sheiky) takes over.

What teams would be interested in Campo? Richmond?

I think there would be some interest - from match committees if not from supporters. He's in pretty good form - and in pretty decent company in the table below from afl.com.au:

AFL 2003 MOST KICKS
1, Nathan Buckey Collingwood 301
2. Gavin Wanganeen Port Adelaide 282
3. Robert Harvey St Kilda 269
4. Scott Camporeale Carlton 262
5. Nick Stevens Port Adelaide 261
6. Brad Johnson Western Bulldogs 256
7. Lenny Hayes St Kilda 253
8. Peter Bell Fremantle 252
9. Adem Yze Melbourne 252
10. Nigel Lappin Brisbane 251

FWIW, on Carltonfc.com.au, a poll on skipper for 2004 shows:
Whitnall 31%
Kouta 22%
McKay 19%
Camporeale 16%

Jarrad Waite, Brad Fisher and Bret Thornton all seem excellent candidates - hard workers, good players, present well to the media (on the rare occasion they look at the positives of Carlton)

Of course, probably Kouta for a couple of years to make sure that Waite is ready, then, after that you have an 8 year captain in a bright Carlton future

Yes I'm serious and that is my opinion.

Campo will be a big chance to move on, we have to trade aggressively and he is one who we could get something in return for.

I want Whitnall to be traded as well but I doubt the club will move him on. But they bloody well should !!!

Whitnall as a KPP would be wanted by a few clubs such as Geelong, Bulldogs and perhaps Melbourne.

The good thing is that of the clubs you have listed, they are all down the bottom end with us, hence they have lower draft picks to trade and need to reassess their playing list as well.

I can't agree with you there Sheiky.

Whitnall is a foundation of our re-building plan. I'm confident that he can get his form up (he was getting there against West Coast)... but we need some leadership in the forward line. Sure, Whitnall may be "fat", "slow" and a few cms short of the perfect height for a CHF, but that hasn't stopped him before. He has the ability, talent and fitness to beomce one of the better CHFs again, but he'll need plenty of confience and some support.

There is the midfield factor. He is not struggling because of the gameplan, it's because our midfield is so crap that they can't deliever the ball into the forward 50 properly. It was no surprise that Whitnall kicked 70 goals in 2000 because we had the best delievery in the competition; but what convinced me to keep him was his efforts in 2002.

Consider that in 2002, we had a worse midfield than today and a far weaker gameplan with lower inside 50s. Whitnall missed half a preseason last year, played down back a lot of time time, but was still in contention of an AA position at CHF before Fevola crashed into him. His form prior his injury was fantastic... in a team with the worst midfield (with hardly any forward delivery) but still managed to be very good. He was more confident, unfitter and weighed more than this year. what does that tell you? Either his confidence is down, or he can't relate to Pagan well. I realise there has been a huge amount of pressure on him, but he's got to stop thinking he's Wayne Carey. It's obvious that he doesn't like the gameplan, but he'd better accept and and change how he goes about playing in that particular plan. Find space, take a lot of marks, kick a couple of goals here and there, give leadership to the forward line, be a physical presense and run the game out.

He can do all of this, if his mind is on it. If he can get his confidence back, then we'll be regretting it. Besides, there is too much support for him to be traded. If he does, I have no doubt a majority would want blood spilled. We know what he's capable of doing, and he's still 23! I would consider trading him if he was 26-28 but age gives him another chance. He has time to redeem himself, can you give him that chance Shieky?
