Why are there no Cheerleaders in AFL like other football codes?

Only good thing about having the Rugby come on late on a Friday night (leave the TV on station after AFL telecast) before having to turn it off out of the sheer boringness of the game. But the cheerleaders at least seduce you in to thinking something exciting might happen.

The Bluebirds and the Tigerettes back in the early eighties were great.

What happened??

Was it too tacky??

Why didnt they continue?

Is there some feeling that it doesnt work for AFL football?
 
C'mon, don't forget where it all started......the Swanettes....actually spent a night with them when they hit Melb.....(OK.....I only got my one line out and that was it....but one of my mates got one out of the club and plucked some feathers I believe...although he never produced a feather as evidence, he did make a few trips up north that year!!)

I think Edelstein took the concept from his true love Carlton.

Must demand chronological accuracy when it comes to hot women on the football field although a good story to back up what was a timely reminder.

They certainly fit the Sydney scene but seems as if Melbourne is too pure sporting wise for that stuff.

Thank you for correcting my timeline events. I think it must have been that the Bluebirds and Tigerettes just weren't up to the standard like the Swanettes. (routines that is!!) Can only remember the red and white!!

And as for the statement about not needing babes adorning the field because the game doesn't need new ways to attract fans....I agree, it doesn't, so what, bring 'em on anyway, damn, are you one of those sitting checking you have the correct behinds for each player marked in your record at half time?
 
Simple answer to this question.....

Our game alone is still a big enough drawcard for entertainment. I mean seriously, who would go to a basketball game if there were no cheerleaders??

Im not sure if this was directed to me but.....

As a kid I used to try and keep up with all of that but gave up half way through the first quarter. Once you missed a couple, what was the point from thereon.

Ive got some old football records from the early eighties with my pathetic attempts to mark goals and behinds in the footy record showing no more than five or six entries.

Obviously committment in that area was lacking.
 
Maybe the prospect of standing around wiggling pom poms (and everything else) while it is pissing rain in the middle of another ********ty Melbourne winter would limit applications?

Isnt more the fact that we dont have any real breaks during play, unlike the other codes. Ie no Timeouts or holds in play during subsitutions (sp?).

I really hate to bring a balanced, level-headed view to this discussion...really I do.
Not sure how many of you take an interest in the NRL, but I do. The NRL is still in the dark old days to some extent in that it is very much still a boys-only sport. Sure, women and children go to the games and all that, but 85% of the crowd I imagine are male. Compare it with the AFL where it's probably closer to 55-45 and you will see that cheerleaders would probably alienate a very large percentage of the supporter base...women.

So you're saying we should have male cheerleaders too? :p

Actually, I think you're right on the money. Introducing cheerleaders would be seen by the AFL as a step back in terms of class.

Funny you say that. I took my family to the NRL semifinal at Olympic Park last year and there were two sets of cheerleaders - the Stormgirls and the Coca-Cola girls. Very easy on the eye. But then my missus and another woman sitting near us both said they should have male ones as well. I actually couldn't argue with that. if it's good for one, then it's good for the other. My six-year-old was intrigued by the Coca-Cola cheerleaders - 'Daddy, why are their shorts so tight?'.
Look at all the work the AFL has done in promoting women's issues - breast cancer awareness, violence against women etc. Reintroducing cheerleaders would just set it all back a decade or two.
For all its faults, the AFL has done a lot to encourage women and families to enjoy the footy.

Also where would they 'cheerlead'? Behind the goals? In front of the interchange bench? It's not like the rectangluar rugby stadiums where there is often ample room behind the goals and on the sidelines for the cheerleaders to titillate the specators.

If we really want to Americanise this game, the only way to get around it, as I see it, is to make the umpires 'cheerleaders' of sorts....ie boundary and goal umpires could be young nubile scantily clad females dressed in the home teams colours:cool:

If the goal ump from the brisbane games (Chelsea I think her name is) did that, then I would almost think about being a cheer squad member.

No, I was directing it to Madtiger for suggesting the game didn't need it some visual entertainment while waiting for play to start.

I remember my 1st season going to the footy...every week nearly I walked out to VFL park from home and being only 9 or 10, I couldn't afford a record, but after the game, after racing onto the field and see how many players we could tag...how strange is that looking back.....'WOW, I got 6!!' 'Yeah, so what.. I got Hart!', we would make our way up to the members boxes and see how many records we could get...saved them for years??? most were pristine...I know the guys sitting in those boxes hardly looked at them let alone marked in the behinds. Hope the ol' lady kept them in a box somewhere, they probably would sell well on ebay now!

But back on topic, someone brought up the point of the game being so continuous for cheerleaders now, which is right on I guess. Still leaves the breaks though!!

Hell, if you bring in the men dancers for the women, you also bring in the gay community too. Wow! Now we are really getting some marketing going!!

Maybe this thread should be closed due to the danger of really getting into some political incorrectness from now.
