Why do umps wear numbers?
Is it because American sports do it?
Why do they have their photo in the Footy Record?
Why do they get their name in the paper?
Why do they have microphones?
Why do they have their own profile page on the AFL website?

Is it an ego thing? Are Australians basicially a bunch of egotistical shallow Americans who need recognition and profile otherwise they won't lift a finger?

Why do umps wear numbers? Mainly for coaching purposes so when being marked the observers can tell which ump it is
Is it because American sports do it? No
Why do they have their photo in the Footy Record? - To bring to light which umps are doing the game, they also have milestones and whether you like it or not there also apart of the game
Why do they get their name in the paper? To tell the supporters and clubs who is umpiring their game
Why do they have microphones? For coaching purposes the coaches will use the mic clips to see how their communication is
Why do they have their own profile page on the AFL website? Because believe it or not some people actually follow umpires whether their starting out in umpiring or been there for a while they are like football players role models to the umpiring group

The End...

Numbers on the back of umpires are also used for statistical purposes (frees paid by which umpire) by the AFL on game day.

Odd thread, though. The umpires themselves aren't responsible for any of the numbers on their backs, the mics on their chests, their names in the paper/record or milestones on the AFL website. Clearly many other people think they're job is - and they are - important enough to warrant this attention, and rightly so.

Interesting stuff...I was under the impression the numbers on their backs were their IQ's...I stand corrected.

I have no problem with milestones being recognised and I wouldn't say they were responsible for numbers on their backs but I would've thought their advisor would know which one of the 3 is which.
As for the microphones, surely they could have ones that are only linked to the advisor, not the nation!

Well why dont you, and every other moron complaining about it, take your complaints to the broadcasters. No point taking it out on the umpires, or even the AFL for that matter. What gets broadcast is up to the networks.

AFL sanctioned it though... buck stops with them, they can withdraw the right to mike their umps...

Who's taking it out on the umpires? I never suggested it was the umps idea and as if they would request it.
Chelsworthgale is correct. The AFL agreed to it. Unfortunately for the viewer (and listener on some radio stations) they have to listen to the umps over the top antics!!!!!

Of course they aren't. They are never responsible for anything.

Everybody placed their order for the AFLUA Umpires Collector Cards?
Can't wait! Bill Deller said theres gonna be one of him in the next series. I'm hoping the NBA bring some Referee cards out! Oh hang on, they're not that nerdy!!!!!

Wasn't the original purpose of numbers on the umps back was so that when a player got reported for abusing an umpire, they could identify which umpire was being abused?

Interestingly the SANFL removed the numbers from the umpires shirts in 1998 so that they could become less identifiable.

.......
Who's taking it out on the umpires?

you, by the sound of it mate.
im not an umpire but fair go mate, these blokes have been called every name in the book, still they go out there day and night and run the game. If it wasnt for them there wouldn't be an AFL. The kids who are aspiring to become umpires need someone to look up to, so why not give these blokes a bit of recognition?

as for having a go at the collector cards mate, that's just stupidity. grow up and respect the people who make the game what it is.

at the end of the day the abuse is a part of the job... they get (very well) paid to umpire so I have no sympathy, it is their choice to do it.

It is like a plumber chooses to be a plumber and has to deal with blocked toilets and live sewers... demolition tradesman will need to remove asbestos sometime in his/her life... it is their choice to be an ump, the abuse is a part of the job, they need to suck it up and move on!

Weird comparison. You're relating required skills to the abuse umpires receive.

It's a plumber's job to fix plumbing issues, which means blocked toilets etc.

It's a demolition tradesman's job to sometimes be in a position where dealing with asbestos is unavoidable.

It's an umpires job to officiate a game of football.

A better comparison would be comparing the abuse a plumber might cop, to the abuse an umpire deals with every day that he goes to work.

the comparison is there... you just missed it entirely... let me simplify it for you...

umpires go to work knowing all well that there is a chance they might have to deal with abuse...

plumbers go to work knowing all well that there is a chance they might have to deal with a live sewer...

Demo contractors go to work knowing all well there is a chance they might have to deal with asbestos...

etc...

it is engrained in the job, which is why they are financially compensated, hence the lack of sympathy for their chosen employment.

I couldn't care less which umpire was which. I don't need to see numbers on their backs. I DEFINITELY don't need to hear them during a televised game. That just makes it more frustrating. I realise the broadcaster probably wants it but I hate it when I hear rubbish like, "GOOD TACKLE" or "GOOD CONTEST." Isn't that for Under 10's footy, not grown men?
