Why does Bower always take on the opposition??

Developing player; let him make his mistakes, and learn from them.
If only Bower wasn't getting the ball, then we could bag him for not being a footballer who can't get the ball and calling him soft or tentative in the way he plays.

Wait a minute.....

This is becoming like the Richmond board after you laughed at them eating each other alive.

All these Chicken Little threads taking shots at our young players should be moved to their buddy draft threads which is the place to discuss Carlton players. We don't need threads to bring outsupporters like DC who only post tripe about players because they're here to get a rise out of Carlton fans.

You're not funny.

I'd be happy too, if my heart would leave my mouth and resume it's rightful place in my chest cavity ;):p
Each to their own:thumbsu:.

I'm more than happy watching our boys learn from mistakes.

This is Carlton's problem we don't have enough players prepared to run 15 meters with the ball before they handball or kick.

For christs sake don't discourage this in Bower, along with Judd & Walker he's the only one who does this.

I hope Benjamin develops I'm sure he'll tuck it under the arm & run.

Simmo? Waite?

Because maybe that's his strength?? What a strange concept that you'd encourage a player to play to his strength .

But seriously, I don't know why people expect the kids to be stars straight out of the box......we all know that his Decision Making is not the strongest point to his game, but it won't improve if he goes back into his shell......it would be like an inexperienced fire officer not wanting to deploy his troops on the fireline in case they get burnt over. You gain experience by doing ....of course he will make mistakes in the beginning, it is all part of developing experience. If he is doing the same things in 2-3 years and not learning and improving with experience then you probably have validity for your concerns.
Come on Gilly they have to be stars from game one

Who cares about getting experience and adjusting to the tempo

Can be painful watching Bower with the ball coming out of the backline. He looks like an emu on a busy highway.

It's like he's invented his own weird dance move, he shuffles along and takes about 4 sidesteps without actually moving anywhere....:D

I thought it was hilarious, I saw most of him late in the season when all was lost anyway so another turnover / holding the ball didn't hurt anyone

The idea of taking on the opposition is to draw them to you, freeing up your teammates. For it to work effectively, skills must be top shelf under pressure. Ours unfortunately are B grade. Ratten has encouraged guys like Bower to run at the opposition and draw them out of position, however when it breaks down with skills errors, our defenders are made to look very poor (ie Saturday's first quarter).

Bowers development has been great.
Given their relative experience I'd say he beat Boyle Sat night.

The only thing he needs to do is improve his kicking......expect during the year to see Simmo, Walker, Scotty etc running past him a lot for the dish off.

I think his attack on the ball is great and gets opposition forwards chasing tail immediately. His defensive work has improved heaps.

I can't believe anyone has an issue with him other than for his disposal, which has improved. Better still his decision making has improved.....execution still with much room for improvement.

Pretty much agree with all that - impressed with him and hope to see him cement a spot in the 22 this year - BUT I do think he trys to take on the opposition at the wrong times. Especially when there is a man 20 metres in front, he seems to lope towards them without much intensity, wanting to take them on when it'd better serve him to pass it off. There's nothing wrong running when you've got space, but to me it seems it's the above situation where he gets himself into trouble most of the time.

The thought of Bower, Waite and Setanta charging out of the backline is terrifying.
We will spend the season with our respective hearts in our mouths. i love the emu analogy used earlier.
The upside of attacking relentlessly from the backline is a daring style of play and hopefully quick movement into the forward line.
Just remember these 3 players will no doubt all outrun their opponents. So if they get their decision making right MOST of the time, we'll love it.
Lets not jump on Bower for being exciting that why he was drafted. My main concern with him is that technically he cannot handball. He hits the ball on the underside and the ball spins opposite to the correct way. He also handballs with a stationary hand and therfore gets no momentum. I can't believe he got this far but like our other skill errors i'm sure they will finally be addressed now Ratten is in charge.

Read the entire thread, I'm all for Bower playing his natural game and taking blokes on.....I still reserve the right for my heart to be in my mouth though :p;)
As does everyone, but I stand by my comment.

Each to their own:).
