King returns to face Hawks

Richie Pace for Geelong Football club

News
Geelong has recalled premier ruckman Steven King for its clash with Hawthorn in Launceston on Sunday. King has been named along with Mathew Stokes, who returns after serving a four game suspension, Charlie Gardiner, Nathan Ablett and Kane Tenace.

King missed the opening of the season after picking up a slight calf strain in the final pre-season game against Melbourne. He came back last weekend through the VFL, gathering 23 possessions against Tasmania in Hobart.

“He’s our number one ruckman, he’s an All Australian and best & fairest winner, and we want him back in the side playing good football,” Cats’ coach Mark Thompson said.

“The plan was always to give him a good run out in the reserves last week, get him through that then bring him back.”

Stokes was suspended following Geelong’s win against Port Adelaide in the NAB Cup in Darwin. Stokes was the first player suspended under the new rules for front on-head high contact, a rule that was vigorously enforced in the pre-season.

Brad Ottens will miss with a sore hip, while Travis Varcoe drops back to the VFL after kicking three goals in two AFL matches.

Geelong must trim the 25 man squad to 22 players on Friday afternoon.

Geelong’s squad

B: Corey Enright – Matthew Scarlett – Andrew Mackie
HB: Josh Hunt – Matthew Egan – Darren Milburn
C: David Wojcinski – Jimmy Bartel – Shannon Byrnes
HF: Paul Chapman – Cameron Mooney – James Kelly
F: Tom Hawkins – Nathan Ablett – Gary Ablett
Foll: Mark Blake – Cameron Ling – Joel Corey
Int from: Kane Tenace, Charlie Gardiner, Steven King, David Johnson, Mathew Stokes, Joel Selwood, Brent Prismall

Ahhh. Thanks alot! :)

Sounds like he is being rested to me.

It's probably a good move though because King will most likely break down again and miss the next few months, so Otto will be well rested and prepared for the heavy workload he'll have to undertake for the rest of the year. ;)

Aaaarrgghhhh!!!!!

I think we're seeing now why King was brought into the side, rather than for Nablett...Ottens must've pulled up sore from the dees game during the week, hence King being rushed into the side.

Call me a dreamer a dillusional out of reality freak but i want it on record
STEVEN KING has got some Good (not as good a 2000-2002) solid contribution football to the GFC in his legs at AFL level.
- Give him a chance when fully fit
- He had a pre season this year!!!!!
- Give him a chance without the captaincy burden!!!!!!!!
- A "rejuvinated happy guy" was how Harley described him in December-January.

Herald sun Monday morning sport lets i hope we see- "King reclaims his crown"
as our best ruckmen i mean not as captain.

I admire you KINGY, to aptain this team when injured for the last 3 years was a great effort. Lets concentrate on playing good footy now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

LONG LIVE THE KING
