Last night on "White Line Fever", Chad Cornes said that he felt very uneasy about having to wear Ports traditional black and white jumper in round 19 and that there were many other players including Matthew Primus, that felt the same.
It has always puzzled me why Port was chosen to replace Fitzroy.
Yes, they had a proud and rich tradition in thier local competition,
but i believe there is no more polorized club in the country. Being a Fitzroy person aside, I can find absolutely nothing to like about Port as a club and assume that thier membership base can
only decline as seasons pass. Whats the go?

Blaming Port for Fitzroy's demise is like blaming clowns for Ronald MacDonald. Personally I like Port 'cause of their tradition, indeed they were the most successful club in any first grade league in Oz.
I don't see that they 'replaced' Fitzroy'. Lets remember, it wasn't like a baton change went on. Port would have eventually come in regardless of whether Fitzroy hung around or not.
Port had reached agreement with the AFL to come into the comp in 1991. The SANFL flipped when this was announced - in reaction they came up with the SANFL-backed Adelaide Crows. As a sop to Port Adelaide the AFL then promised Port they'd eventually get to play with the big boys in the AFL. It looked like it was going to happen in 1995 - as we know, it happened after Fitzroy folded.

You guys have missed my point. I dont hold Port responsible at all for the events of 96, they like Noel Gordon simply had to play the role of someone recieving one of those oversized goofy cheques and smile, and yes Fitzroy was replaced, 17 does not fit into 16.
I was only pointing out that even their own players including the Captain do not feel comfortable wearing the club jumper and highlights the difficulty Port will have ever expanding the supporter base, thus provoking the question, why were they chosen?

Port where actually supposed to enter the competition back in 1991 instead of the Crows.

Port Adelaide where clearly the next option for the AFL at the time. When the decision was made in 1995 there was no other option that was financially attractive. WA had two teams and Adelaide is the most parocial sporting town in the country and could easily support two teams. No other team had the supporter or financial base to make a go of it and have done well.

Port have more supporters than the Doggies or North so way question why they entered the comp

In my view if the competition was to have another club in 1997 Port was the logical club to come in. A great tradition and successful over a long period of time.

What should have happened in 1996 is that Collingwood should have been merged with Port Adelaide and the merged club called the Port Adelaide Magpies. This would have kept alive the identities of both clubs - Port and Collingwood and the new Magpies would have had a great supporter base in Melbourne.

Naturally Fitzroy should have been retained as a standalone club and we would have chalked up a premiership in our own right by now :D :D :D

It will be difficult for the Power to ever attract supporters, who've grown up hating the Port Magpies.

They should be able to keep those supporters, who used to follow Port Magpies, but their future depends on attracting a new generation of fans.

I've never seen them play, but from what I gather, they seem to play an exciting style of footy. That, along with some Premiership success, should help them attract enough younger fans to ensure their future.

Of course, they also have the advantage that the AFL won't be trying to force them out of business. ;)

I'll just muscle in on an almost relevant thread here, but one thing I've always wanted to know is what Stephen Paxman was like when he was at Fitzroy, and I'm hoping someone here could tell me. I didn't follow AFL at all before Port came in, so the first I heard of him was when he came over to play for us.

Was he your first choice fullback before the merger? Did he take a long time to settle into the side, or was he good from day one? Anything like that would be good to hear. Thanks.

From what I recall Paxman seemed to just fall in to the position. I don't remember him starring from his first game. I remember Plugger used to always towel him.

On the Port topic, if the push to get them into the AFL hadn't occured, would that have spurred on the 1996 merger mania?

When Paxman started, he looked like being a very good CHF or CHB. He had a huge leap & was quite mobile. He caused a lot of trouble for the oppostion, when used in the ruck. Then he hurt his back & ended up being more of a plodder - a very hard trier, but without being spectacular.

Spot on Fat Pizza. I really liked his work in the ruck. Obviously gave away inches but did some very good things in that position.

I would be rapt for him if Port got up and won a flag while he is still there. A terrific reward for a really hard worker.

Paxman was/is one of those players you never notice never comment on, never bag etc, so he must have been reasonably servicable for us.
I really don't think I ever saw him play two bad games in a row,
he was a player who was slotted in somewhere just like a jigsaw puzzle piece, and he fitted, so was never messed with after that.
' if it ain't broke don't fix it'

It looks like Port have been using the video of John Ironmonger's spear tackle on Graeme Wright, to help them in their training drills.

Hasnt anyone even got a throw away line about the basis of the whole thread? Chad Cornes said on tv that he and several other players including the Captain, were not happy about wearing the Port jumper in round 19. If M.Voss uttered such words, comments would be flying thick and fast. Fire up.

Yeah, I would be pretty dissappointed if he said anything similiar. Its a bit like when the mergers first year when I used to get angry at the bears players for not passing it to Lions players and when the likes of Barker and Clayton didnt get a game.
