I am not to sure at the moment what all the fuss is about this kid. I know we have three groups out there.

Hawthorn need a KPD group!
A speedy outside running midfielder group!
We need a small forward group.

i for one am 100% up for getting a nice ready made or 90% there KPD Someone who is 194+ and well over 95kg. A speedster though the middle would be great to work with Changa. However all this talk of a small forward with out number 1 pick is rubbish. Willo has been out all season with a knee as we all know. He will slot back into this team perfectly. He will play out of the square 100% and then work at ground level. I am getting the feeling a lot of you have forgotten how good Willo was at ground level. He has that X factor just like Buddy. The only problem is if his knee injury has slowed him down which i am sure we will only find out next year.

Can anyone shed some info as to why we rate him so highly and why we have forgotten willo?

Willo is not a crumbing forward. We would benefit from a crumbing forward. Rioli is the best crumbing forward in the draft.

Thats about that.

I'd agree on a key defender though, however there are near on none that are any good at under 25, that would be on the table. Hence why people salivate at Bradley, Brown, Carroll, Watt... hacks, that in a delusional moment of granduer could be the answer to our FB problem.

it's the tambling thing again. rioli has got a nickname that people feel smug when mentioning, and it becomes a bit of a herd mentality on postboards where the majority of members have never seen the players in question play.

there's probably a greater than 50% chance we won't take him, which is bound to be quite distressing to people who have been listening to their own self-talk for the past 3 or so months.

yeah he does appear to be the type of player our side could do with, but so are other players. most of us agree that hawthorn's recruiting staff have done a decent job of building the list over the past three years, so i'm interested to see the outcome of their deliberations next month.

He is a good crumbing forward and has excellent forward defensive skills similar to the Davey brothers. The pressure he would add in our forward line will create scoring opportunities for other players.

After writing this thread i did some research on the kid. I am one who can say i have never seen him play and the only thing i have heard of is that he kick 7 goals in a big game.

I know where you are comming from saying that Willo cannot be a crumber however he has always had to played tall for us due to our lack of high and leading players in the forward line. This year 2007 you could say has been a break our year for our forward line in terms of tall player.

I reckon if Mitch Thorp plays J Roughead will play back. If not, Roughhead will be the second tall forward. Buddy will just do his thing. Just like this year and Boyle if we still have him will play the third tall.

Willo will most likely play out of the square. Super quick still (i hope) and makes us LESS BUDDY CONSCIENCE. In the finals we went to him just a bit to much. Willo as we all know is a super kick and we can all trust him with the ball in front of goals.

However now he won't be going for everything in the air and can play that ground roll. I remember against Geelong at the end of 2005 he was a machine at ground level.

That all said i read a few bit here and there saying Rioli could be a super quick midfielder and he was only playing forward as a result form injury. In that case i would love to see him in the Brown and Gold.

Given his good performance in repetitive sprints at the draft camp, there is a good chance Rioli will be drafted before Hawks first pick.

Freo will use their first pick on a good qaulity midfielder and I think one of Masten, Palmer or Rioli are the most likely choices for Freo to take.

He actually was left one out in the forward 50 as Damian Hale cleared it out to utilise Rioli's ability. This game was the final of the series and was to have the Territory finish 2nd in the Division 2 of the Championships. Rioli kicks a huge 7 goals the largest haul for the Territory, was backed in and he thrived under the pressure and stirred N.T. home for the victory.

He won't last to our pick, hence why the hell are we getting excited about him.

The Age said he might go around pick 11, so you never know, with a bit of luck...

Anyway I've played on Cyril and at APS level the kid was something special. Could tear the game apart in a single passage of play. Just had that spark, can take a great grab, kicks the cod beautifully, and has amazing goal sense.

Would love to see him play with the Hawks.
As said by a poster above, perhaps start forward then graduate to the midfield ala Gazblett.

Every year the Hawthorn boards are full of talk about some fast small foward that we absolutely must take with our first pick. Last year it was Leroy Jetta that everyone wanted us to waste pick 6 on, this year they've latched on to Rioli.

Personally I can't see us using a first round pick on anything except a top midfield prospect or a KPP, but who knows what our recruiting staff are thinking.

haha yeah that's right - another little aboriginal bloke with a name or nickname that captures the imagination of the masses, sight unseen. it would seem that without a gimmick, it's very difficult for indigenous draft prospects to endear themselves to this board. not even the nickname "buddy" would have been enough to stop people crying into their cornflakes about bloody "bling bling".

look out for the 11 home games + "undrafted nickname disengagement therapy" membership package that the club will probably have to offer to punters next year, and every year thereafter. the package will include 4 sessions with a school counselor, where techniques for dealing with loss and letting go will be taught.

I too have seen him at APS level and if you are looking at Rioli you should look at 5 or 6 of the Clontarf Academy boys from Perth who are very similar and we could pick up for the same purpose in the 3rd or 4th round. Need another gun midfielder with our first pick, why should we go past Scott Selwood

Last year we all knew we were going KPP. Either Thorp(e) or Sellar.
This year Pelch wants 1. KPD 2. outside mid 3. crumbing forward.
Let's wait and see if he can weave his magic?? ;)

Can someone actually prove to me that Pelchen has said we need a crumbing forward please or has this been instigated by BF???? Can't see the logic of a first rounder for a 'bit' player/position

He made no mention of the positions in his address last week in Canberra.

Where did we hear about it then???

I don't think he is a crumbing forward guys....

He is actually Buddy Franklin's Uncle (in aboriginal terms) and I have seen photos of the 2 next to each other.

He is nearly as tall as buddy.

Might not quite be a KPP, but is easily over 6ft.

He can play crumbing forward. But he can also play on a wing or flank and push forward to kick plenty as well.

He reads it so well, and that shouldn't change from the level I've seen him play to AFL.
So hopefully he can play crumbing forward.

All hypothetical anyway, he is unlikely to last until pick 12.

Saw Cyril or Junior as they call him last year on two occassions when they played Haileybury in the APS. On both occassions he was just fair. The second game was the Grand Final of the APS which was a great match won narrowly by Haileybury. In that game players to feature other than Junior Rioli were Sam Shelton (Brisbane Lions) Nick Smith (Sydney) Nathan Djuerrka (Geelong) and Brett Collins (Hawthorn). The stand out player and awarded Best afield was a player we have already.............Brett Collins. From what I saw Djuerrka was the one that was super quick. Junior was just ok as a player!

I don't like the idea of it. While being able to say I've seen absolutely zilch of his footy, Im just not sold on the type of player he is, and especially with our first pick.

Too many of the crumbing/pacey little blokes come and go, and in my eyes we would be better off going for the best player we can get with our pick when its our turn, and work on drafting/trading for a player that fits the mold, and with less chance of burning us.

My two cents.
