Was reading the newspaper online and came across this article from Garry Lyon, didn't see any links to it here on your board and thought it was worth listing.

Whilst I'm not a huge fan of Lyon's articles, this one is quite good and lays it out for what Watts needs to do to bridge the gap between schoolboy champ and consistent AFL player.

Undoubtedly Jack Watts must be the most frustrating player on your list, you can see that he has the attributes to succeed but his issues are all between his ears. Even if he could regularly produce at 70-80% of the level Gunston does, you'd be pretty happy.

He's had a few coaches work with him thus far but no-one has been able to find the key to unlock his full ability. Sadly, this may be his last season in the AFL if he doesn't.

Thanks for that.

The idea of having lots of coaches in a short time is usually deemed a negative on the whole, Sam Blease raised this on leaving the club. It usually goes hand in hand with poor club performance and stability though which is why I think we tend to over inflate the coaching aspect. In this case multiple coaches was a symptom of something bigger that was holding our players back.

On the other hand I've heard players from other clubs who have been thankful for the wide variety of coaches they've had due to experience and varying perspectives on footy.

As hard as it may be, Watts has to try to change a negative into a positive.

Wide perspectives are good but so much change so quickly can never be good.

Good article. I, and I'm sure most people here, have been saying that Watts can't last long term as a floating wing/half back. He needs to get forward and be more damaging, especially on the scoreboard. He's been treading water for 90 odd games.

Needs to step up in Dawes absence today as the most senior tall forward.

At the time it would have been quite detrimental, no question. We were a shambles.

I'm simply saying moving forward Watts needs to build a resolve from what he (and 21 other guys still on the list from pre-Roos) endured. As he matures he might look back on things differently and use some of it to advantage. Dealing with different football people and being tested in ways not all young players are tested.

I'm talking latency here.

good article, one of his better ones.

its an interesting theory the "you should be like this one". Whilst i'm not always a fan of it; I think this case is a great example.

"But if he was to go and watch Hawthorn's Jack on Monday he could get a lesson on how far he could progress."
i know in 2006/7ish Clarkson took his then leadership squad to a Sydney game and basically stated this is not what you have to become, this is what you have to beat.

Hope he, and the demons turn the corner this year.
