Prior to this current season the Roar finished 3rd twice in a row and are currently in the top 6 yet their crowd figures have halved. So much for your argument that success and playing finals automatically boosts average crowds eh!

There is an extremely simple explanation for why the Roar's crowds are so low; they raised their ticket prices to ridiculous levels.

If I was a Soccer administrator I'd be more concerned with the sharp decline in crowd figures across the country

Declining crowds? Perth and Wellington are up. Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide are down a bit, but negligibly (which is astounding considering how bad Adelaide are right now). So that's five clubs that are fine. Plus, NQF are ok for a new club, and CCM will always be small. So seven of ten clubs are on the right track.

Personally, I think A-League crowds have settled to where they are likely to remain for the forseeable future.

Let us not forget that the Victory and Adelaide were last year's grand finalists, and Sydney is currently on top.

The fact that reigning champion, Victory, plays Sydney when they are 1 and 2, and draws 27,000, is enough to tell us that some of those crazy crowds in the second season (when even I sampled a game) will not be repeated in a hurry.

Incorrect. ANZ Stadium, MCG, SFS and Suncorp stadium are currently up to FIFA standards already, without any modification.
the point is that all of the stadiums that you mention exist for other sports - they have been paid for and continue to be paid for primarily by fans of either the rugbys or australian football. if fifa/ ffa want use of them for either a month/ two months/ ten weeks (and i don't think they've cleared that up yet) they should be told to piss off or pay up.
the world cup is fine if you dig soccer, but soccer hasn't contributed the the raison d'etre of the afore mentioned stadia. if soccer fans are so keen to have the world cup, hold it in the afl off season or PAY UP

Away supporters to Melbourne Victory-Sydney: couple of hundred.
Away supporters to Carlton-Collingwood: half.

The crowd numbers of the league will be directly proportionate to the standard of it. Whilst some excellent players have came to the A League (most noticeably Jason Culina), we have lost far too many to the mega dollars of Asian and Arab leagues. Joel Griffiths is an excellent example - he would still be in the A League if he could earn serious dosh here. The A League needs to keep its best players and attract more good ones from Europe to increase crowds. That is difficult at the moment with the salary cup structure, which I disagree with.

But I don't think it makes all that much difference - what I mean is that the quality of players would have to increase dramatically to make a noticeable difference.

For example, let's take this year - I would argue the A-League has never had a better standard of players, across the board, than this year.

For starters, something like half a dozen socceroos returned home. On top of that we have Fowler, Jets picked up Vignaroli, and here are more.

People have widely acclaimed SFC securing Lavicka - have widely acclaimed their play (personally, I think it's you run of the mill counter attacking style, safe at the back, getting 1-0 results, etc).

But it's all to no avail - the crowds are what they are - that's it.

What about Collingwood-Sydney in Sydney? That game attracts appox 60,000each year. It would be much more if the teams were 1 and 2 in the comp as well.

Soccer just isn't that popular here, as crowd numbers indicate.

Nope, incorrect. Whilst there have been some good signings this season, they do not counteract the steady flow of players that have been on their way out since season 06/07. I would say the standard of football overall is better in 06/07 then now - and that reflects in crowd figures.

Except the MCG and Etihad are both included in the bid. A WC bid requires 12 stadia of over 40k capacity.

I'm not sure if this piece of powerful paranoia has been answered to or not because I'd rather not read through three pages of "those wogs and ****ters can't have their ****** cup here", but the original stadia included in the immediate World Cup bid do not have to be the same stadia that are actually used for the World Cup.

In other words just because both the MCG and Etihad are listed in the potential venues doesn't mean that Etihad will definitely be used when the World Cup comes around. It's simply wanted on the list to show FIFA that the right capacity stadiums exist in the country.

it's got nothing to do with whether the appropriate stadia exist: they are there and they do. it's about whether fifa have the right to demand exclusivity etc. i say they don't have that right, and if they try to assert it then they should be told to take their fabulous event elsewhere (or PAY UP)

WC events do not require 12 stadia mighty tiges. They require a list of 12-16 potential stadia. When the actual event is on, only 10 of those stadia will be utilised. But none of that was being said in all of AD's chest beating over the stadium issue.

Righto. That's why Australia vs China attracted 70,000 fans, despite the game being a dead rubber, and Australia fielding an U20 team. Yeah, really unpopular.

AD is not running the show . Apparently either is FFA or else it would have divulged the details .

It's 2010 - where are the details .

Considering that:

  • We haven't even won the bid yet, and
  • If we do win the bid, there's 8-12 years from now until the actual event where some sort of arrangement can be brokered re: the stadia.
I've never understood what all the fuss to be honest.

Good point. Try telling that to Macca and Johno down at the Boolara footy club. They will bite your head off.

Firstly, that game was played more than a year and a half ago. Why not bring up recent games?

Ok, I will.

10 OCTOBER 2009 AUS VS NETHERLANDS = 40,537 (SFS)
14 OCTOBER 2009 AUS VS OMAN = 20,595 (ETIHAD)

Also, both of those games featured some of our European based stars. Both of these games also got less than Collingwood vs Sydney in Rugby League territory.

Secondly, you yourself suggested that we cannot compare AFL to A-League crowds due to the respective status of each code. So why can you compare INTERNATIONAL crowd figures to the AFL's crowd figures? You can't have it both ways.

Soccer just isn't that popular here, as crowd numbers indicate :)

Well for starters, Australia vs Netherlands was a sellout. So a big fail for you there. And Australia vs Oman - cheapest tickets available were $50. Oman are hardly opposition that will draw crowds. Another fail for you.

Edit: AFL crowd figures are comparable to socceroos crowd figures. AFL is the highest level of Australian Rules. International Soccer is the highest level of soccer. Both are in direct competition

They are two recent internationals featuring the full socceroo squad - never mind the excuses - they are the actual numbers.

We're not talking maybes, coodabeens and if onlies.

Considering the game was played during the middle of the week, and tickets were $50 at the cheapest, 20,595 was an excellent crowd. The equivalent AFL game would be Melb Demons vs Dockers at the G in the middle of the week. That fixture attracts 13,000 even on the weekend, even with $20 tickets available.
