Agreed. With how strong QLD footy is it's time to fix WA. Especially with NRL now having a team.

That's what it's all about right?
Especially with how shocking the WA draft system is right now.

WAFL colts coaches are meant to work for free while the Allies and Vic Metro coaches all get salaries... Make it make sense

In all seriousness, the five Docklands based teams in Melbourne have not registered a top 4 finish OR a 14 win season between them since the league expanded to 18 teams.

That's 15 years where a third of the league has been effectively shut out of being competitive.

There is a cause for an inquiry into this - it seems to be a pretty glaring disadvantage

Interesting look at the top 4 finishes this century.

Carlton - 2000
Essendon 2000,2001
North - 2007
Dogs - 2008,2009,2010
Saints - 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010

Saints dug their own hole through bad club management after the 2000s
Only time the dogs made it, the were the saints bitches so that explains the dogs anger.
North and Carlton love tanking for bottom picks. They both deliberately did it and it worked out so well!
Essendon had Dodoro... yikes!

I am not blaming Docklands. Other clubs have been better run.

Academies and F/S are fine. They’ve just gotta change the ridiculous draft match system.

At the moment clubs get gun players for a bunch of worthless late picks.

Fix it - the bids happen a week or two before the draft, and you have to match with a pick within 10 picks after the bid. Still a bargain, but less so.

Don’t have one? Pick trading is there, get one.

Can’t get one? Bad luck.

None of this ridiculous points system.

Ashcroft went pick 2, so Brisbane have to use pick 12 or lower to match.

What does that change in the next 5 seasons though ?

The changes you speak of won’t have a impact to 2030 at best

Yep this. Keep everything as is, same with father sons, but come prepared - gotta have a pick closer in range.
The points system is cooked.

How do you know Ashcroft will go pick 2 before the draft? Then how do you know another player will go say pick 8 before the draft?

Can I ask the obvious?

Why do they get to match?

In a true draft, F/S and academies should not exist, but AFL doesn't want to remove F/S because of the history of it and academy because apparently top draftees will then play rugby instead

So given the participation numbers are higher in Queensland than Wa, as that only grows, we’re happy for every single year, the Suns and Lions will cherry pick top talent (even if they finish top 4) at the expense of everyone else?

Even if I concede your point about F/S’s, they’re sporadic. Getting an ENTIRE talent pool exclusively is insane.

AFL is yes, for "growing the game". It depends if "growing the game" is more important than fairness in the league

AFL is yes for growing the game... just depends on geographical location

Like Halls Creek can go 2 years without a AFL oval in northern W.A without anyone caring in the slightest

Because there's no rugby and people there

How do you know Ashcroft will go pick 2 before the draft? Then how do you know another player will go say pick 8 before the draft?

Well for starters they have a rough idea anyway, so can prepare throughout trade period. They already do this by assembling enough later picks to match.

If you’ve got a Daicos, Darcy or Ashcroft coming up, you’re almost bloody certain they’re going to be bid on in the top 5. So you better have a top 10 pick ready. If you don’t have one, trade for one.

But even after trade period, just do the bids a week before the draft. Then you have an additional week in the leadup to the draft for pick trading.

So if Ashcroft is bid at pick 2, Brisbane need a pick below 12 to get him. That might cost them next year’s first or second round pick as well to trade up to get it. So Ashcroft has actually cost them a lot closer to market value, rather than essentially getting him for free with a bunch of worthless late picks thanks to this rort of a points system.

The bidding is actually a good system because it establishes market value. The problem is the matching - you don’t have to pay market value because you can just use a pile of worthless late picks.

Make them pay a lot closer to that market value.
