Re: Will Hammill

Will Hamill

Some highlights from 2006

- debuted in the senior Qld side against the ACT
- 31 possessions and named in best against Zillmere Eagles
- 3 goals and named in best against Redland
- 2 goals and named in best against Labrador
- named in best against Southport
- named in best against Labrador

Hamill played at both ends (including a successful key defensive job on one of the competition's best forwards in Korey Fulton) as well as stints in the midfield. However, his future probably lies in the back half. He demonstrated an ability to play as a close checking defender on dangerous forwards as well as showing great running and rebounding as a half back flanker.

He reminds me of 2 players in particular. The first is Will Thursfield who showed a heap of promise as a tall defender for Richmond in 05/06 before suffering an injury. The other is Craig Bolton. It basically took Bolton 4 years and a change of club to secure a regular senior spot. I don't think Hamill will be given that long but I reckon he's a pretty good chance of seeing some senior time this year.

Re: Will Hammill

His game on Friday night was pretty ordinary IMO. Got a bit of the pill but seemed to panic whenever he had it. That surprised me because he strikes me as a calm and collected type in the AFLQ. I would have liked to see him get a defensive job on a Dogs forward. Maybe with our backline working so well, they couldn't squeeze him in down there.

Hesistant to write a guy off after only a couple of games but he would really need to show something special in the reserves to warrant another crack in the seniors.

I know the club believes he will be a late bloomer - I would like to know where they think his best position might be.

Re: Will Hammill

From report of Reggies pre-season match v Morningside

Will Hamill also gave the Lions plenty of run.

Hamill kicked one gem of a goal in the last term, bouncing four times from near the wing and dummying around three opponents before maintaining his balance and composure and goalling from 40m.

2 goals and named in the best.

Re: Will Hammill

Elevated to senior list today for Bradshaw.

Onya Will.

Might play this week?
I think his promotion is more to do with the fact that he has to be elevated before round 15 to be elevated at all and Will is very much behind the 8 ball in terms of being at the lions next year so it is the club giving him every opportunity. From all reports there may be other rookies who have had form to demand a spot in the team ahead of Will.

Hamill earns elevation

for lions.com.au

Will Hamill was today elevated from the Brisbane Lions Rookie List to replace Daniel Bradshaw who has been placed on the Long Term Injury List.

A former captain of Queensland’s U18 side, Hamill was initially rookie listed by the Lions back in 2004 and has impressed with his efforts for the Suncoast Lions in the AFLQ as a defender / utility.

The lightly built Queenslander was re-drafted by the Lions in the 2006 Rookie Draft.
Hamill has already had a taste of senior AFL action having played in all four of the Lions’ 2007 NAB Cup matches including the Grand Final.

Still only lightly framed, Hamill is regarded as a late developer who could potentially mature into a great AFL player.

He is the third Lions rookie to be elevated this season behind Colm Begley and Daniel Dzufer.

I like the look of this kid, has no fear at all.. Just needs to tidy up his disposal a bit and he will make it IMO......

I got the same impressions from watching him in the NAB Cup. He was hard at the ball, and did a lot of work off the ball to help his team mates, but unfortunately his disposal was woeful.

I don't understand why people are surprised by this elevation. If I can remember correctly, Drummond and Stiller were also surprise elevations.

Agree with Grim's statement. His effort was exceptional. Second, third effort and off the ball work could not be faulted. If he tidies up his disposal he will be an ideal tagger in the Kirk mould.

Re: Will Hammill

Hmmm. Effort was there but his decision making and disposal is still poor.
I guess he can use JMac as a role model and we can hope that he also can improve. He's been on the list for three years, surely he would have learnt to kick a bloody football by now?

Re: Will Hammill

Why is that?
Rookies can't be promoted after round 15 IIRC (its about then). If you think about it in logical terms that means the rest of the season is 6 weeks so a bad hammy means people would argue he is out for the "season" and it goes against the point of rookies.

Hammill is also in his last possible year so at the end of the year it is promote or cut loose - thus this is his last chance.

Re: Will Hammill

After a shock elevation Hamill had one last chance to prove himself. Since then he played in a famous upset victory over West Coast, a 46 point thumping of Melbourne, and a record breaking 117 point victory over Carlton. His form has been solid, but not outstanding.

With the return of Black he now finds himself back in the reserves. Has he done enough or is this the end for Will Hamill?

Re: Will Hammill

I fear it may be the end. He's been given a decent run now to show his wares.

weevil and a few others like the look of him. It depends on whether the club wants to invest another year after he's already been given 3.

I was initially surprised after last year's rookie draft when we took him. To be honest I haven't had much chance to see his stuff this year, so I can't comment on how much he's advanced in this past year.

Re: Will Hammill

I've got the feeling he'll be gone. I can see now why we persisted, but to be honest he's one more rebounding HBF and Dzufer would appear to be better equipped.

A Carlton bloke
was elevated off the rookie list a couple of days ago and we are now approaching round 18. If there is a cut off you would think it is pretty soon.

Re: Will Hammill

Rookies can be promoted at any time.

Its the moving of a player onto the long term injury list that needs to be done by a certain date.

That date must not have elapsed yet, because the Carlton rookie was replacing Koutafides.
