Player Watch Will Kelly (Delisted 2023)

I can't understand why people want to belittle and ridicule a young man who wore our jumper albeit it was for just 5 games. Most of us wouldn't have even come close to doing something like that. He gave it a crack but couldn't make it. Not everyone is going to make it. Imagine how he'd feel if he was to read this channel.

Give him some love not try to put him down. All the best young man.

I doubt punters are intending it to be personal …

… but I’d imagine a lot of it is growing frustration over a long period of time at seeing a player get given so many opportunities that other players don’t seem to get, and the punters don’t see that player showing promise. It was the same thing with Cory Gault.

Your average punter would be scratching their head thinking “WTF did Kelly get 5 years, and get tried in practically every position on the ground, and yet a player like Jackson Ramsay only get two?!?!?”.

A decision has been made that he isn’t going to make it. Fair enough. It happens. Most don’t make it. But couldn’t we have made that decision 3 years ago?!?

And people get very cynical when Daddy is somebody in high places.

And people get even more frustrated when said 5th year player can’t even break into the side when a stack of players in his position get injured. And a player of similar age who we picked up for a pack of peanuts and who has just arrived at his 3rd AFL club gets games ahead of him.

Yeah but if Markov didn't kick on, we'd be bemoaning him being given another chance. But if you can run like Oleg you get a lot of chances. Similarly if you're a great size who can move with a lovely kick like Kelly you get a lot of chances. Same with Billy Frampton and Nathan Kruger.

...

I disagree 76.

If Kelly or his old man were reading the posts in this thread, would they not take them as personal? Especially the ones that mention his lack of heart or hunger.

Will seems like a nice kid but didn't make it. Got delisted while his father is CEO. The rest is just us being us.

But you have to speak the truth. There is no point skimming over the truth for fear of offence. Lack of hunger is not an unfair observation and the same would apply to lack of intensity. Lack of heart is a bit harsh.

There’s probably better language to use but when you see a player who has good enough height, athleticism, skills, hands and ball reading ability to make it what conclusion do you expect people to make.

Was given every chance over five years, played forward, back, and even as a tall wigman, that's more than most. Showed glimpses but had a shocking run with injuries early. When fit, just wasn't able to string a solid block of form together to earn a call up. Was occasionally called upon as cover for injured players, and never earned or cemented a place for himself in the seniors. Good luck to him in future, hope he gets picked up by another side.

I was thinking more the other player of similar age who we picked up for peanuts who just arrived at his third club (Frampton)

Lack of hunger would be hard to prove, so can't be used as fact. It's a fair observation, but only as a personal opinion not as a judgement call on him. Some players don't look as if they're ever going hard e.g. Pendles.

Agreed, I can't figure out why Kelly hasn't made the leap.

Will appears to have all the physical attributes but for reasons not clear to us has not been able to bridge that gap.

We can assume that he doesn't want it enough, and that might even be accurate, but we don't know.

We’re not disagreeing.

What is taken as personal is not necessarily what is intended as personal.

Without being overly "personal" & also being relatively respectful, I simply think that the player is/was "NGE" or "NOT GOOD ENOUGH". OK. Hopefully we can draft a player in either the upcoming National Draft and/or the ROOKIE Draft and/or the Pre-season Draft, who will fill the role that Will was otherwise being groomed to fill when he was originally drafted as a Father/Son selection. OK. Goodbye & good luck.

It's purely because he's KP size and they are hard to come by. He showed a bit in the second half of the year. The other option is to take a recycled KPP and still have no guarantee of making it or even worse, a speculative tall in the draft. If we take a punt on a KPP in this draft, then Kelly might be done but it's not crazy to keep him hungry for a spot

I’m surprised Kelly got delisted. I’d say we are taking Lycett and will play Cox as a pure forward.

Cox playing forward will have more to do with Cameron improving his consistency in the ruck than whatever ruck we recruit for the VFL

His rd 19 VFL game vs Blues was the only great game he played in 5 years

Would be a travesty to re-list him

But if they do… most on here are still high from the flag

And so far Wright and Fly have shown very good list management judgement

I sense Kelly might be relieved at his delisting.

Or I could be projecting my own feelings onto him.☹️

Can’t have been easy for the kid. Always under pressure to improve and perform and struggling to get a game, while being the son of a legendary Pies hard man, who then comes back to your club in a senior role.

A nightmare scenario if you ask me.

Good luck Will.
