AOL is finally killing off WinAmp, as of 20 December 2013.

This little program has been an essential application on my computers for over a decade. I don't use it as anything more than a player (MediaMonkey handles my library), but it has been one of the first things I have re-installed every time my computer got cleaned out.

Thank god it's a local install rather than a web service, so they can never take it away from me!!!

old school. long time since i've used it but yeah winamp was one of the first thing i downloaded on a new computer 10-15 years ago.

**** me some people used to put some serious effort into the skins of that thing.

bit of a shame in a way but that's technology for you. i probably haven't thought about winamp for 5 years and if it weren't for this article i'd probably have never thought about it again.

When I was in uni in the late 90's... I would setup a zip disk with winamp, ICQ and a couple of other tools. Back in the old days when you could install applications on removable media in windows and not have to worry about getting the same computer next time you were in that particular lab... or anywhere else for that matter.
