These Americans are making me sick

I am watching the NBC Today show and they continue to mention that the race could have been re-run but wasn't and what a coincidence it is that the head ref was Australian and he let the placings stand.

They really can't handle losing can they??

The Yanks spend a lot of time going on about the 'miracle on ice' at Lake Placid in 1980. Guess we got our own version now...definately a tortoise v hare race this one!

I totally cracked up laughing when I saw it - bloody brilliant! And great to hear him on 'The Ice Dream' say that it was his intention to stay at the back and just hope everyone else fell over (in both the semi and the final) because he knew he had no other chance of winning! Gotta admire his honesty.

Pretty poor form from the Yank fans, booing him. It's not him they should have been booing, but the other competitors who caused Apollo to crash (though I guess that's probably who they were in fact booing, but it still took some gloss off the win for the Aussie, to be greeted by boos). The American seemed pretty relaxed during the medal presentation though, chuckling away - he knows it's the nature of the sport, I'm sure.

*** OUR FIRST WINTER OLYMPIC GOLD ***

Well I'll be buggered... slow & steady "does" actually win the race!!

I'm reminded of the famous story about the tortise & the hare where the hare bolts out to the lead but is careless and the smart tortise snatches the win from under the hare's nose.

BTW: Has anyone registered to volunteer for the Ice Dream's 2010 bid for the winter olympics to be held at Smiggin Holes in NSW??? I reckon that's a crack up!! :D:D

I just love that Australia's first ever gold medal in the winter olympics was due to one of the biggest f*ck ups ever seen in sport. The fact that he was even in the final just amazes me (due to disqualification). If I was him I would stop skating, take out 1 tattslotto ticket and wait for the numbers to roll up, because I have never seen such an unbelievable display of luck in my entire life. Perhaps so, but would we allege that the official made his decision because the winner was his countryman, particularly in light of the decision he'd made earleir that penalised his own countries relay team?

At least the man who came second had no gripe. A true sportsman.

hmmm... also just read, the korean skater was a 16 yr old !! sheesh...

bradbury's other job is making the skates... of which, Ohno is his biggest customer !

Talking to a bloke at work about this...is it any worse than someone winning the downhill when the 4 'best' skiers all fall over or mis a gate?

Bradbury deserved that goal. Maybe not for the race itself (although staying on two feet did win him the race) but for his career, where I read he's broken bones in his neck and at the start of his career lost a lot of blood in a skating accident.

WTG Steve!

To echo everybody's thoughts here, good one Bradbury for having a bit of luck go his way. As he said, the gold medal wasn't for the race itself but for all the hard work he's put in over the last 10 years.

I taperecorded the race and still crack up over the ending of the race. The only thing funnier was the reaction from the NBC crew, the commentator almost freaked out when he crossed the line!

Youve got to love it.....he gets into the final by disqualifications and ppl falling over and then your in last by quite a distance when everyone stacks it in the final bend and you cruise across the line!! What a champion!

Congrats Bradbury, not so much on the race but on a great career and perhaps deserving of a little luck for once...little, huge massive enormous amounts....its all the same :D

I don't think the media's reaction is justified (there is nothing in the rules that requires a re-skate) but I don't necessarily blame the crowd for booing. Besides, I think that they were booing the actions of the Chinese guy and not the winner. Bradbury did nothing wrong, he was just it the right place at the right time.

Stephen Bradbury, you arsey bastard, go out and buy some lottery tickets, but good on ya, at least you made the Yanks crack the *****s, and that sort of balances it out:D .

P.S
Well done Alisa Camplin, (she trains at Mt Buller, near Mansfield, so i'll claim her as a local), at least you were the best on the day, and throughout the tournament and Lydia Ieradiraconou (don't have a shot as me because of the spelling, I was crap at English), for finishing 8th in her first major event, well done, you've done us all here proud.

I couldn't believe it when I heard Bradbury won by having four skaters go down on the last corner but then when I saw the coverage I was more flabbergasted.

His quarter final he had to finish in the top two to advance ..... he comes 3rd. "bye bye Steve, good effort anyway" Huh? Disqualification? He's 2nd and Hello Semis! Has to finish top 2 to get into the final, four skaters in this one. He is coming last around the last bend again ... "bye bye Steve, fantastic effort anyway", bang! two go down and the guy in 3rd and Steve raise their hands in amazement as they cross the line.

He is damn lucky he stayed close enough to win the final, the others almost had time to crash into the barrier, get up and still win cause Steve was so far behind. LOL Classic. He was a local where I used to live. Nobody more deserving though he did look almost apologetic when he collected his gold medal. :D

ROFL I saw the same footage the other night, I was laughing so hard. How unbelieveable is that? That is a lot of luck!

Actually, Stealth ... as BigFooty's resident Yank basher, I must say that the guy who came 2nd to Bradbury put in a magnificent performance on and off the track. He clearly deserved to win and obviously had them "on toast" until he suffered interference from the Chinaman.

I'd suggest the Western Bulldogs should sign that Chinese bloke up because he's obviously a top notch "scragger".

The American was obviously the best skater out there ... and what amazing will-to-win he showed when he made that last desperate lunge to the line, only to be pipped on the post by the Aussie.

But I think the thing that really made this guy stand out was his complete lack of anything resembling a tantrum afterwards. The guy had every right to be completely pissed off ... and probably deep inside he was ... but you would never have known it from his demeanour.

And the winner ... Yeah ... he seems like a really great guy who deserves his bit of freakish luck. I saw him on Roy and H.G. afterwards and he was under no illusions whatever about his lucky win. He seemed a real level-headed guy ... and good luck to him.

I think a few of Australia's more high profile elite sportsmen could learn a lot from both the gold and silver medallists in that particular event. The true champion who got the silver, and the modest Aussie who got the gold.

With the exception of our whiny @ss TV media who have to try to make a huge friggin' issue out of everything - everybody else here in the States says -"that's racing!" - and so congrats to Bradbury.

Also - I see the Aussie's won a second gold. Again - congrats!

found this at thebladder.com and found it quite comical.

WINTER OLYMPICS
Search on for the 'new Bradbury'
by STAFF REPORTERS

The Australian Olympic Committee will fund a nationwide search to find anyone who can skate more slowly than golden boy Steven Bradbury.

"Short track is becoming more tactical every year, and by Turin 2006 I suspect the skaters will almost be going backwards," an AOC source said today. "Bradbury is obviously a trailblazer, but the sport is constantly evolving and soon he is going to be far too fast to remain a medal prospect.

"We want someone who can REALLY stay out of the ruck. There's been a bit of interest from Jack Lockett, the Ballarat bloke who's about 108, but when we gave him a trial it turned out that he's quicker than Bradbury already, and even given his potential to slow down over coming years we doubt that he's got what it takes.

"At this stage the best bet will probably be to visit the AIS and try to persuade some of Australia's track sprinters to switch sports. Their ability to move slowly seems almost limitless."
