OK fellas hopefully not repeating the question but i searched through a handful of wireless threads on this board and coudln't find it.

i've set up a home network with the bedroom as the main computer and a laptop running off the wireless router.

everything is working, and the laptop is connecting to the wireless router however the internet is not working on the laptop... what could be making this happen??

i connected the router wired to the laptop and the internet worked fine.

but wirelessly, even though the laptop is connecting to the network router, it is not going on the internet... very frustrating.

Hey black thunder, how did you fix this problem because i have just bought a Macbook and i am able to connect to the router however i am unable to connect to the internet.

I cant be sure how he did it but try this:

Right click on "My Network Places' Icon then right click on the icon for your network and select 'properties'. On the next screen scroll down in the box in the middle of the screen until you see TCP/IP. Highlight it then select 'properties'. Then on the next screen set the option at the bottom to 'obtain DNS server automatically'.

ok shows not over because the thing ____ed up after i left.

i originally fixed the problem because the IP address on the laptop was set to a static IP address and was not correct. it needed to be an automatic IP address.

on the desktop computer though it requires a static IP address. I don't know why but the desktop wouldn't connect to the internet through an automatic ip address.

but anyway, for whatever reason the router would disconnect itself from the internet after about 5-10 minutes of usage so neither computer could use it.

when i had another shot at it i re-set the modem settings and everything, laptop and desktop work for 5-10 minutes, router disconnects from the internet (security, wireless, modem, power lights are on but the internet light is off) and the same problem occurs.

very very very ____ing frustrating.
 
I work for an ISP helpdesk. Anyway, sounds like your loosing sync and/or auth which could either be a modem problem, filtering issue or an ISP dropout fault. Make sure you turn off the wireless and only test with a direct connection to PC.

Try this.

Do an isolation test. Unplug phones, filters etc and just have modem line directly into wall socket. Test for at least a few hours.
Remove any double adaptors or extension cables from between the modem and the wall socket.
Do you have a "back to base" alarm system. It will need to be either filtered for normal use and isolated from the phone line for testing and troubleshooting.
Do you have Foxtel. Foxtel updates and options can be run over the phone line, and this will need isolating for testing and troubleshooting.
Do you have an external ringer (door chime) attached to their phone line? This will need to be isolated for testing and troubleshooting.

If it is still dropping then it's either your modem or a line fault. Make sure you test with a different modem first as your ISP probably won't lodge a fault or you may get hit with an incorrect callout fee if they don't find a problem.

thanks DL, won't be back in Dublin this weekend, but will the weekend after to give it another shot. Mrs folks are away for 5 weeks after that so i won't have to worry about till mid August...

anyway, i've tried that one. works perfectly fine with a wired connection the PC, and a wired connection to the modem.

Router or Modem only ever drops out when the wireless is up and running and the laptop is connected to it.

I'll look into those other things, but as i said, i can't work out why the router is connected all the time with the PC but drops out when i run the wireless.
 
That's why we don't support wireless where I work, too many problems.

I would recommend you bridge your modem out and let the Router do all your authentication and DHCP etc. Just configure your modem in Bridge Mode and then in the WAN settings in your router enter you ISP U:P etc. You will need to also plug your hard wired PC into the Router if your not doing this already. I would also recommend you set both laptop and PC with their own IP's in the NIC, this way you'll get no routing issues.

and yes, i agree, wireless = too many problems.

i have it working in my house in belfast though no problems at all.

at my parents house in sydney though..... oooo my god shocking. just could get nothing going but the fact my old man has throwers and recievers all over the place for foxtel doesn't help. i've given up on the house there.
