Its that time of the year when we think about possible line up for the up and coming games. I think most of us agree that we should give some of our youngsters a go in the pre-season comp. I also think that players who are coming back from "overuse" injuries should not be risked by bringing them straight into the game situations. I would also class Roo in this category. Keeping that in mind here is my line up.

F: _ 17. Scott Welsh _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 19. Mark Stevens
HF: _ 40. Chris Ladhams _ 2. Wayne Carey _ 26. Jacob Schuback
C: _ 28. James Begley _ 20. Tyson Stenglein _ 24. Brett Burton
HB: _ 3. Kris Massie _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 36. Simon Goodwin
B: _ 37. Trent Hentschel _ 8. Nathan Bassett _ 9. Tyson Edwards
1R: _ 35. Rhett Biglands _ 23. Andrew McLeod _ 18. Graham Johncock

Int: _ 10. Matthew Bode _ 11. Michael Doughty _ 12. Robert Shirley
____ 13. Ben Hudson _ 14. Hayden Skipworth _ 33. Brent Reilly

Thoughts??????

No thoughts but I will be there.

Maybe I can help you lot with your chanting. There have been a lot of posts lately saying how pretty poor Adelaide cheer squads are at making themselves heard. I as an Adelaide supporter find that alarming!!!

I could even get some guys from The Stand to come down if Adelaide United aren't playing on the day and help you lot to be a bit more vocal! :p :D

You would love us. Take my word for it.

I like your line up except for the bench and I'd start with Reilly instead of Begley.

Too many midfielders in there. Another tall or two other than Hudson would be good.

I think Scott Stevens should get a run and maybe Rutten or Jericho.

I take it you dont rate Ronnie at the minute?

Bring on Friday the 13th!

I chose Begley because arguably he deserves it more after having a really good pre-season but keeping in mind its summer, I would be rotating midfielders on and off the bench like you wouldn't believe. :D

The reason I picked that many midfielders its because we need to find out who out of these youngsters has what it takes to make the best 22. If they are not good enough trade them or delist them.

Scott Stevens would get a game before Rutten but Jericho is the utility type. I picked a team with 3 talls in attack and defence plus 2 ruckman. Thats 8 talls in the 25 man squad.

Ronnie is not the future. Ladhams and Schuback are. I would rather play them than Ronnie.

Fair call, but I would also have the additional talls to rotate them through the KPP's.

If Clarke is not fit, Biglands and Hudson would be taking turns as lead ruckman.

Another tall such as Scott Stevens or Jericho would cover us in case of injury and allow Carey and Stevo to have a break. Wayne and Mark dont need to be playing 4 quarters just yet.

I also dont think we need to test out Skipworth and Shirley to see if they are AFL ready or not. Giving Scott Stevens or Jericho a run would be a more interesting experiment IMO.

Fair call on Ronnie too.

Hmm yes Ronnie is an interesting one. I am not sure what 2004 will hold for him. I always have these high hopes that he is going to rip a game open in the forward line, but as yet we have only seen glimpses.

I hope for the best, brace for the worst with Ronnie.

Reilly to start on a wing as this must be his break through year.
Begley to HBF.
Goody on ball.
Stiffy to HFF.
Schuey / Ladhams to the bench (unless either Stevens, Carey or Welsh don't play).

F Welsh Carey Schuback

HF Ladhams Perrie S.Stevens

C Reilly Goodwin Burton

HB Begley McGregor Massie

B Krueger Bassett Shirley

R Biglands Macleod Edwards

Interchange Bode Johncock Hentschell
Hudson Stenglein Parker

Assuming:
Stevens, Clarke, Hart, and Smart unavailable
5 new players on trial
S. Stevens to be started in his customory 3rd tall forward roll
Start Krueger (if fit) in back pocket.
Shirley could be tried as small backman

Thoughts??

Good point. If he does get a run, I would be pleasantly surprised.

I agree with Stiffy that Hentschel may be a third tall in defence (essentially Parker's spot) because of his form yesterday, he's had an injury free pre season and the club keeps talking him up.

This is their big chance to get TH into some form and show him off. He's also on his last chance.

If there had been another injury to one of our regular defenders in Kenny or Bass, I would play Parker.

I guess I'm not keen on experimenting with the side too much esp when Hart and Smart are gonna come back in.

Scott Steven is also ahead of him in my book, as he has some experience and was recruited to slot straight into the side.

I think being on the rookie list may have also put Parker behind some of the young talls on the senior list that have been with us for as long as he has (if not longer).

I think that it'd be silly not to play Parker in the Wizard Cup,

We all know that he's good, and how much it kinda sucks that he's still on the rookie list, but with him playing in this, it'll show us whether he is ready yet for the AFL or whether he has to stay longer in the SANFL.

Either way, there's no harm in playing him in one of the games.. After all, they're only wizard cup, not like they matter all that much.

Assuming we don't play Hart, Smart, Roo, Krueger, Clarke, Bock and Torney through injury or prior injury, the others that I wouldn't play in the 24 for the opening match would be Rutten, Burns, Gallagher, Doughty and Mattner because I can't see them being key players this year and Watts because I want him really looked after.

This means that my 24 would be the same as yours with one exception, Stiffy, and that is Scott Stevens in for Doughty - we have to try Scott Stevens.

My team for round one of the Wok, injuries permitting, would be

F: Welsh Perrie M. Stevens

HF: Johncoc k Carey Ladhams

C: Burton Stenglein Reilly

HB: Begley McGregor Massie

B : Hentschel Bassett Edwards

R: Biglands Goodwin McLeod

I/c: Hudson, Bode, Shirley, Schuback, S. Stevens, Skipworth

I think my team placement is basically the same as Kane McGoodwin's. Obviously there would be constant rotation on and off the bench.

If Doughty plays I'd have that at Skippy's expense, with Dogga taking the back pocket and Edwards running on the ball.

Would not play Carey unless he has fully recovered from his set back & even then would still be reluctant to risk him in the early games so would swap Wayne with S Stevens or maybe B Rutten.

Definitely play M Stevens if he is fit as he is one player who needs plenty of game time, just hope his body stands up to it this year.

Would find a spot for Parker just so i can see the guy play so maybe a swap for young Hudson or Doughty.

As for the Wok cup well i would still like to win every game we play in just as long as we give the young guns plenty of opportunity to show what they can do.

Not a bad line up but would try to include Parker if we can we must give him an opportunity in the Wizard Cup ;) :D

Carey is back to full fitness noddy. He is already back in full training and looking a million bucks. He was extremely keen to play in the trial but coaching panel held him back and he is expected to play against Norwood on friday.

I was thinking about playing Parker but I think Hentschel and Scott Stevens are in front of him in the pecking order. I would love to see him get a go but not at the expense of Hudson. Hudson should be played in all pre-season games to get some AFL experience so if we need him in the season proper, he would have some sort of AFL grounding. I would make Hudson an automatic selection for Wizard Cup. Besides we can't drop him after impressing in the trial. He should play well again on Friday and both Norwood and Glenelg are not blessed with quality ruckman.

Have just read the SM report & by all accounts Hudson has really raised a few eye brows up in Berri so your right of course in playing him as much as possible in the early games, would still like to see Parker in the side though Stiffy & let Carey cool his heels for another week or 2 definitely wont do him any harm.

Parker should play in at least the first 2 matches imo. It's the only chance you'll get to see him at the top level. Especially after the Crows "shafted" him by keeping him on the rookie list.

And if you don't want Carey to play 4 quareters then I think he should start on the bench.

I also think Stevens, M. should play all 4 quarters. No point nursing him a month before the season starts. The bloke needs all the flat out match practice he can get. If his body is not up to it, better off finding out sooner rather later.

The last Wizard Cup game should be with your expected Round one line-up. That'll leave two spots on the bench for some experimenting, eg. Hudson, Watts etc.

I have reservations about playing M Stevens, but you make a very good point noddy.

Can't see us getting 30 games out of him this season though. He is a very tough call.

I would play both M Stevens & Carey, but rotate them both off the bench as we can play more reserves. They need some match fitness. Perrie can play most of teh games & we can try some other options too (eg. S Stevens).

I thought the south melbourne boys had the stands measure with the chants on Friday night....

....until our first goal of course. What a beauty.

I agree both of the lads should play but not for the whole game. Rotate them on and off the bench and give youngsters more game time.

Would hold Stevens back, but a lot to be gained from having Carey on the ground to tutor some of the young talls, that are undoubtedly going to get an opportunity in the Wizard Cup

Ticket prices from Bass. Add $2.75 service fee to printed price.

Adults are $15.65, Juniors (6-14) $2.75 and Concessions $10.15.

There are family tickets, from what I can tell it is $7.41 per 2 Adults plus 2 Juniors tickets and $4 fee.

Will definitely be there for the first match. Anyone else going?
