Anyone see the thing on Sports Tonight last night about Adelaide wanting a ruckman? They interviewed Cameron Wood who simply stated he didnt really care where he goes, he just wants to be drafted.

This is a concern to me. I think the AFL is killing the game. Why wouldnt a young SA lad want really badly to play for a club in his home state? No body seems to aspire to play for the team they supported anymore. Pretty soon if not already, all clubs will be the same, just a mixed bag from all over the place. No real allegence to their favorite club or state, just playing for the money and recognition. Its taking the emotion and club or state pride out of it.

Does this concern anyone else?

I didn't see the piece but,

I understand what you're saying...but...a lot of people here were concerned about Thommo's club alliegence b4 he became a Crow. A lot of young fellas won't go there just for fear of this sort of criticism if they end up at another club.

I think privately he would be wrapped if the AFC picked him up....but probably is wary of coming out and saying it on National Tv

Remember to it is a club competition and while State ties are strong - they're not everything.

What do you want him to say?

"I ********ing hate all non-South Australian teams" - wouldn't that be a ringing endorsement to other clubs.

I'm pretty sure he will go at either #6 or #7, and he would have a better idea of what clubs are thinking of him than we do.

How can players have allegience to their home state teams when they are playing for interstate teams? The National Draft has been in place for a while Crowked, pretty silly post really.

Before you get to excited about players playing for the team they support get the facts.
Cameron Wood is a Richmond supporter so therefore he doesnt care if he does go interstate as he would love to go to Richmond but i dont think it will happen as they wont waste one of their real early picks on him, although i think he will be gone by the time pick 8 comes along so if u want a ruckman you might have to look at DeLuca.

Mate, I grew up wanting nothing other than to play for my team. I wouldnt care what anyone thought of me, other than my club. If I were nominating for the draft, I would want ot go to the Crows. If the Bulldogs heard me say I wanted to go to the Crows, they might let me. If they still picked me, in 2 years I'd be looking to be traded to the Crows. Maybe its just me, but I would rather play for Centrals than the Western Bulldogs and they would never get my best effort.

I wasnt critisizing the player but the system. I think a competition without allegences, is nothing. In years to come, we will be watching bloody Collingwood or Melbourne kicking our ass with our young players, and I think it sucks.

Brett Chalmers..yonks ago..1990?

" I want to play for Collingwood I would be really upset if any other club drafted me I advise those clubs thinking of drafting me to not waste their time''

In this day and age of media managers player/managers the kids are told not to say anything which can be taken to be prejudicing the draft..I understand your concern but his body language would (IMO) have shown if he was reciting the mantra or if it was something he truly believed.

Brett Chalmers sent out letters to all clubs but Collingwood saying dont bother drafting me I aint coming, Im going to Collingwood. It was this that brought him un done.

I know its the way of today. Its just disappointing to me that it is the way it is. Welcome to the DFL - Drone Football League.

Less concerned than I was when I saw Brent Williams and Kane Johnson fighting back/in tears after being drafted to us in 1995... ;)

The lad has to be a diplomat, it's almost a certainty he'll be spending at least the next 2 in Victoria.

Firstly, Wood is a Richmond supporter. Secondly he is a proffesional athlete (at least he will become on on november 20th) and as such he needs to present himself in a proffesional manner. I am more disappointed to hear someone who picks one club that he wants to play for. That tells me he will ******** off as soon as his contract runs out. I am more pleased to hear player say (and mean it) that he would go anywhere he is just desperate to play AFL footy. That tells me the kid is genuine in making a career for himself at AFL level. It tells me the kid is dedicated to be successful.

When you go into the draft you have NO idea where you will end up. Its a lottery. Majority of posters here get ********ed off that one of our interstate recruits want to go back home but we are all for poaching SA lads from other clubs. It works both ways. Its a national competition. With draft you got no control of where you end up. Its a proffesional sport. This talk of not giving your all for the club that drafts you is bullocks. Do you not give 100% to your employer?????

In the NFL and NBA all the young men know just to get drafted is the thing. Who they end up playing for really doesn't matter. We are heading the same way. I don't think it is such a bad thing. These lads are making a career out of playing football. I say good luck to them.

Yep, that's it in a nutshell.

Who can blame him from wanting to bail? Obviously he doesn't want to have to bare a mullet and wants to play for a successful side wherever he must go.

I know what you mean, I just think that all non-victorian rookies understand that they have almost squat chance of staying in their home state (hopefully Monfries is a sparkling exception), and so they know to toe the line in regards to their future.

Sorry if I seemed a little harsh, didn't mean it to come off that way.

Hey ****************.

Thanks for the laughs.

Especially the part about wanting to play for a successful side - because theres a good chance he'll end up at the Dogs. :D

Not as certain as it seemed yesterday.

Clarkson has come out and said he will take midfielders with his first two picks (Tambling and Monfries, perhaps?) and either Meeson or DeLuca at 7.

If he is true to his word, Wood would almost certainly be available at 8. That would make life interesting for Craig.

Wood, Meyers or Eckerman?

Did he really say that?

Sounds crazy to me, considering they have jack all young talls.

Plus it sounds like we will miss out of Monfries. :(
