Terry Bailey would be one of the worst racecallers ever imo. I just wanted to get other punters opinions on this subject.

Yep, he's not real good and neither is Paris Hilton-can't judge pace, doesn't know if horses are travelling well or not, is a human sphincter (in 59.06)

I don't think Bailey's that bad.

Try listening to that female racecaller Victoria Shaw at a Victorian Non Tab meeting, she's by far the worst caller I have ever heard. Apparently she's practiced the profession for ten years, she still isnt any good at it!

Don't have much time for Chris Barsby and Tom Shillington either.

I actually think Terry Bailey is quite good. The one who is really struggling at the moment is Ron Hawkswell. He has gone from calling the dogs (which from the little I would listen he seemed pretty good) to the victorian provincial gallops. He is really struggling with the transition. If you want an example, listen to the replay of race Peter Moody's Perfect Rule won at Pakenham on Sunday. I think it was race five. The call was deplorable.

Peter Eustace called at Pakenham on Sunday for Sport 927.

But I have noticed Ron Hawkswell doing some gallops races at the moment, I think 927 are short staffed with Brian Markovic out of action and others on holidays.

I'm in NSW and it was Ron Hawkswell on 2KY.

Wayne Wilson's performance calling the Brisbane races on Caulfield Cup Day 2004 beggars belief. To this day, I believe there was something seriously wrong with Wayne that day. He was calling wrong horses, stuffing up photos, getting excited about maidens with 5 runners in them, the whole shebang.

Ron Hawkeswell is an obese buffoon who SHOULD NOT be calling thoroughbred racing. Stick to events which last 11 seconds where you don't have to draw breath Ronald and leave the gallops to blokes with a bit of timing!

Can't stand Brian Martin, for some reason I never win when he's calling.

I like The Brisbane bloke with the really bogan voice, think his name is Alan Thomas. He's called some cracking big races over the years, really gets into it. Never forget his call of the 1997 Queensland Derby when Yippyio won.

And a like the guy in Perth, nice and smooth.

The worst caller I have ever heard was an English provincial commentator called Basil Brodene( i think). He was just kept on for novelty value as he used to get very flustered during races, swallow his tongue, start abusing himself, that sort of thing. To top it off he had a real geezer accent, a bit like David Beckham or some stall owner off Eastenders.

Yeah, Alan Thomas is tops. Even if his calls aren't by the book, they're full of excitement so he does what he should.

What are people's opinions on the commentator that does South African racing on Wednesday nights?

Think that's when he started having all sorts of health problems (cancer I believe).

I think the bloke at geelong trots last wednesday night was the worst race caller I have heard. Good lord he absolutely YELLS the races. I thought there must have been an upset in every race the way he yelled as they came down the straight.

had to almost block my ears.

Bryan Martin is hanging up the binoculars at the end of the Spring Carnival! He's past his best, a good decision, at least he's going at the right time. There's a few who never know when to give it away.

I couldn't stand being a punter in Sydney - Choosing between Ian Craig and Mark Shean. Both of them are terrible.

The retirement of Martin is great for Racing too.

Have to say I can't stand Brian Markovic either. He constantly refers to jockeys by their nicknames - 'Sparrow' Flaherty, 'Super Sal' Wynne, 'Max' Allen, 'Cuppa' Coffey.... A great way to alienate the listeners. (Plus the very sound of his voice annoys me.)

I'd still put him in front of perhaps the worst of all time - Terry Bailey.

How he rose to the level he got to I do not know. He must have had some embarrassing inside info on the big chiefs at Sky/TVN or something.

I still remember a few years back when he called Adam winning a big race in Sydney and as they passed the winning post he let this little gem pass his lips -

"But it's Adam! Adam with all guts 'n blood wins the (whatever the race was)"

With all guts 'n blood???

Must have been having flashbacks about the Schwarzenegger flick he watched the night before.
