Just wanted to get people's thoughts on who they consider to be the worst recruiting decision our club has made.

Please do not discuss the transgressions that have yet to be substantiated. I ask the Moderator to delete any that discuss them. Thanks.

Personally its easy to look in hindsight, but Wayne Carey has to be
Number 1.

Without getting into any specifics please, I am not happy about the small stain he cast upon our club. I felt his character should have been a massive issue when recruiting him in the first place.

Well, at the time I embraced Wayne. I thought he could give us 'something'. As it turns out, he really didn't give us much, in fact over the last week or so I have cringed, everytime they wheel out a photo of Wayne, generally it is accompanied by him in a Crows Tshirt which really annoys me. He was a great footballer, he is just a s*it of a bloke.

Some other bad decisions....Scott Hodges, Danny Hughes, Allan Bartlett, Bruce Abernathy, Bruce Lindsay, Tom Warhurst, Clayton Lamb.

Worst decision was Aaron Keating followed by Ronnie Burns.

what impact did Carey's character have on his time at the AFC ?

How did it detract from his performance and how did that affect the Club?

where's the stain ??

The stain he has left is now everytime he does something bad, he gets linked to us, by showing photos of him in our club tshirts and representing us.

If you're talking trades, yes then it's Carey. To give up 2 first round draft picks including # 4 that ended up at # 2 for a 32 year old that was persona non grata with his club for a disgraceful action, hadn't played for a year and had a poor last year before being sacked by the Roos - unforgivable.

I think most of us were in favour of getting him, but pick 16 and only pick 16 was all I would have paid, and IMO we should have passed if anybody else was prepared to pay more.

Worst trade - Carey.

If we're talking drafting - which is part of recruitment - there are many that could be tossed up when talking of our first draft pick.

However, the stand-out for me is that drug-taking thief Laurence Angwin. His poor character was known by all teams including Adelaide well before the draft. Unfortunately Adolf Ayres over-ruled the recruitment department's advice and the rest is history.

Worst draft choice - Laurence Angwin.

Not that we are labelling Laurence or anything! HAHAHAHA

Ronnie Burns has gotta be up there for worst trade, whilst we didn't give up much for him, all he did in his time here really was write off his car in a drunken escapade. Carey was bad, the roos did really well out of that, although, Torney did come in the same deal, he turned out alright and Carey did play some good games.

Laurence Angwin has gotta be the worst draft choice, although Meesen and Watts are right up there too.

I would agree with both of these.

The Bode trade was also a poor one - not for getting Matthew to AFC, but for giving up too much in a 1st rounder when the quality of the like of junior burger were around.

I didn't have a problem with Burns as we gave up effectively nothing & were paying very little.

Downsborough - Chalmers was a nothing trade. Didn't lose out, except would have been better off just delisting Chalmers & freeing a spot on the list for someone else.

the draft will always be hit and miss to a certain point

so for the worse recruiting decision is one that you have more known information

for me, the Carey decision was one I did not support, he was not a good fit and we had the wrong strategy to top up our list rather than to build our list, Richardson was amother poor decision

Giving away Hudson and Welshy for potentionaly no one. They still would have been here if we had a better 2007. But they were both injury prone players too.

And I think Carey did affect some of our peformances in 2003-04 indeed but also had some good games. He still kicked 56 goals in his 28 or so games here. Firstly he had a dramatic collision into the goalpost where he cut his leg above his knee and this forced the AFL to change their goalposts, etc. His best goal was in R21 2003 against the Kangaroos in the rain, a soccer kick tight on the right boundryline but Adelaide also lost that game which cost them their finals chances. He had a great game against Sydney R18 2003 helping Adelaide to a narrow victory where he marked just inside the goalsquare and somehow goaled. In Roo's 250th game in 2004, Carey had some great goals as Adelaide demolished the Hawks at the MCG. And now today look what he bloody does, what's wrong with him?

What we gave up for Carey was extensive but what most people dont think about is the work he done with our then young key forwards and defenders. the amount of knowledge the players like Hentchel, Bock and Rutten from standing on a legend like him at training to learn how to use there bodies in contests is absolutely priceless. Look at them boys now. Thank you Wayne for that atleast.

Lawrence Anguin (though in 12 months that could be replaced with Dangerfield)

Why exactly would that be the case?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Are you suggesting that Dangerfield takes drugs and steals, because thats what it sounds like you are suggesting.

Thats exactly right. Thats exactly the point I am making.

I am glad you are able to see that, Im surprised that others are blinded.

In the end the AFC recruited a player that at the time tore his club in two.

Even at the Crows there were a few interesting incidents that took place.

this is a bit circumstancial, how can you measure this, how do we know that this has impacted on Bock's or Rutten's development

As a Hawks fan, I nominate Darren Jarman.

only joking of course :D:D

The guy was the best recruit in the history of AFL ... yes, even bigger than Judd to Carlton.

As for Adelaide's worst ... it would have to be Angwin wouldn't it? In the overall future planning process, he's possibly cost Adelaide at least one flag.

You can say that again!!

Here is one for the future- drafting Aaron Kite over David Gourdis :thumbsu:

Everyone overlooked David, we could say the same with you guys drafting westhoff over Gourdis, there was a reason for not drafting him.

Well the old Mcleod for Groom would probably out do the Jarman one, although getting Jarman was also well done.
