Most amazing field I have seen for a non-compulsory event! The arabs money works in mysterious ways :D

Roger Federer (1) v Andy Murray
Rainer Schuettler v Fernando Verdasco
Stanislas Wawrinka v Qualifier
Mohammad Ghareeb (wc) v Nikolay Davydenko (5)

David Ferrer (4) v Tommy Haas
Jarkko Nieminen v Olivier Rochus
Janko Tipsarevic v Feliciano Lopez
Gael Monfils v Tomas Berdych (8)

Richard Gasquet (7) v Dimitry Tursonov
Qualifier v Igor Andreev
Mikhael Youzhny v Fabrice Santoro
Marin Cilic v Novak Djokovic (3)

Andy Roddick (6) v Juan-Carlos Ferrero
Qualifier v Paul-Henri Mathieu
Nader Mahmood (wc) v Qualifier
Philipp Kohlschreiber v Rafael Nadal (2)

Insanely good matches for first round, particularly:

Roddick vs JCF
Federer vs Murray
Cilic vs Djokovic
Nadal - Kohlshreiber
Ferrer vs Haas

Try and see some of these matches if you can! I'll try and find a webstream.

Federer experienced his first opening-round defeat since 2004 when he lost to Murray at the Dubai tournament, but it is a moot point whether the most newsworthy event of Monday evening came later, when the world No 1 made his contentious post-match critique. Federer suggested that Murray's tennis was still the same as it had been during their first meeting in the Bangkok final in the autumn of 2005. He also said that the 20-year-old Scot's tactics were far too passive, and in the future he could end up having to "grind out" wins. Harsh words, unfair words.

"I don't think that he's changed his game a whole lot since I played him in the Bangkok final," Federer said. ''Not that I'm disappointed but I really would have thought he would have changed it in some ways. It sort of works for him but he's going to have to grind very hard for the next few years if he keeps playing that way.

"He stands way far behind on the court and that means you've got to do a lot of running. He tends to wait a lot for an opponent's mistake," an unimpressed Federer said, sounding as though he had brought some sour grapes into the largely 'dry' Gulf city.

"I gave him the mistakes in the match, but over a 15-year career, you want to look to win a point more often than wait for the guy to miss. That's what has served me well, but who knows, he may surprise us and do it for 20 years."
And people like this guy? Oh man what a cry baby!

He can't accept the fact that these guys are improving and they are closing the gap, and fast.

hehe guess there is a big stash of prize money on offer for this non-compulsory event eh?

I cannot fathom how Roddick beat Djokovic. Well done Duck. Roddick has played great this week and deserves the title, very strange tournament though,

I mean Feli Lopez is the other finalist.

I wonder if Andy Roddick's split with coach Jimmy Connors has anything to do with his current form. I think Connors did well with Roddick initially but as time wore on it just wasn't working and I think Andy made the right call.

I can't believe he beat Nadal and Djokovic to make the final. But what's even more staggering is the fact Lopez is his opponent! Lopez is very talented but how he's reached the final in a tournament with such a strong field is beyond me. I saw Lopez play Gasquet at the Australian Open and he was disinterested, I guess it's all about his mindset.

I'm tipping Roddick to win 7-5, 6-4.

Las Vegas tournament. Hewitt was #2 seed and lost as did Gooch and Looch after they qualified.

Hewitt is in trouble in his career. He simply cannot get on a run of good form in consecutive matches. He is hot and cold. His forehand the last couple of years has struggled on the big points. he keeps saying he can be a top 5 player again, but sadly I think the time has passed and tennis has moved on. The new brigade will be filling the top 10 in the next few years such as Berdych, Djokovic, Murray, Tsonga, Bagdhatis, Nadal, Gasquet. Sad for hewitt, but thats what happens in sport, it evolves and moves on fast.

Interesting words from federer about Murray's game. I can see his point, where Murray does stand a long way back from the baseline usually, and that makes it hard to win all matches. Murray is a beautiful ball striker and great mover, he just needs to step into the court a bit more, especially against the bigger hitters.

Murray stands far behind the baseline as a tactic, he hits alot of junkballs and then steps into the court to change the pace, flattens it out and catches his opponents completely off guard. Its a tactic and a good one because no-one else on tour has such pace variation on their groundstrokes.
