did u see the dew push in that contest?!?!? or am i the only one?!?!?
Yeah I thought I did, though he was behind the front player (Hurn?) on the camera angle so partially obstructed view, could be wrong.
Even so wasn't much in it, shouldn't have been a free either way imo.

Was terrible.

The Cox decision killed us.

What really irked me apart from that, was the amount of frees we weren't paid which were there.

It was like high contact did not exist for Eagles players at ground level.

Yet to see the game but if it's as bad as the performance out at Bassendean today, I'll run naked around Leederville Oval on Monday. Needless to say, I think I'm pretty safe! :thumbsu:

Lets be fair - there were some bad decisions on both sides tonight.

We probably got the worst end, and that one against Cox was a big blow. As has been said, early on in the quarter it resulted in the ball going right to the other end and a goal to the Hawks at a time when the game was really in the balance.

We got r*ped, but it was not what cost us the game.

I hate to complain about it too much on here, because then you just attract the w***ers from other boards that call you whingers and tell you to get over it. Despite the fact they would be the ones most whinging if the shoe was on the other foot.

You win some, you lose some. The umps were very generous toward us against the Dogs.

Still, I think the standard of umpiring of late is a massive concern. The aim for all umpires, across all sports, is to not be noticed by players and fans. It means they've done a fair job and haven't significantly affected the game.

It seems this practically never happens nowadays. No doubt, they have an extremely difficult job - they have to run 14-15km a game and make big decisions in split seconds. But they shouldn't be all over the media every week, it's a joke.

All I ask for is a little bit of consistency - if your going to pay a ridiculously soft hands-in-the-back free kick at one end, fine. But pay it at the other one too.

'tis all about consistency, and the umpiring thus far is as consistent as my sick dog's turds. Glass was screwed today/again. Holy crap, that is scary!

How bout the bit where the commentators were off their heads laughing at the ruckman changing. If that wasnt a breach of the interchange rule that we continually get f***ed over by then i dont know what is. Would've had a free and 50m penalty giving us a shot at goal instead of the Hawks running down the other end and kicking another goal.
yep. Just another "turn a blind eye" moment by the umpires to get the Hawks up.

After the Cox free kick in our forward, and subsequent 3 goals to Hawthorn thereafter, i had to walk away from the TV. Knew we wouldnt come back from there as that huge momentum change destroyed the boys confidence. Couldnt stand watching any more.

umpires cost a goal or two certainly, favoured hawks but we get the rub of the green at home. as someone else said, we are not good enough to make up for the away umpiring advantage, yet

but lets not forget that in a game where goals were hard to score:
- 2 goals were handed to the hawks because of poor decisions by 2 of our youngsters near the defensive goalsquare, IIRC mackenzie and brown
- stenglein messed up THAT opportunity in the last quarter
- we kicked 7 goals 14 behinds... we had our chances but couldnt convert...

umpiring biased, yes, but sole reason for losing, no

In the last Butler almost had his head snapped off by a Hawk slidding in late and Lynch copped one high as well. These were pretty high impact hits to the head, then Selwood is standing up and a Hawks player dives into him, minimal high impact as Selwood actually backed off and hey presto another soft free paid.

Agree 100%.

Poor decisions by McKenzie and Brown I can accept, they are still learning.:thumbsu:

Poor decisions / execution by Stengleign, Nocoski and B Jones just give me high blood pressure. Seriously Stinga and Bones are way down in confidence and its clear as day, Bones is seriously out of form, its not from lack of trying its almost like he's trying too hard and he ends up coughing the ball up and gets easy gaols kicked on him. Both need a stint in the WAFL IMO. With Nicoski just get up up the ground so when he stuffs up it isn't an instant gaol.

What I haven't noticed anyone point out was the most annoying thing about the umpiring of games in recent years. They seem to umpire one way for the majority of the game and do an about face in the last qtr. This game they let things go for three qtrs because of the wet conditions, any 50/50 frees they didn't pay and just let the game flow. In the last qtr they paid weak free's, some that weren't even there.
The three that killed us was Cox in the boundary throw in, he had the ball about to have a shot but gave away a free(what for I don't know:confused:) Hawks go down kick a goal.
Not long after Lynch got absolutely mauled in a boundary throw in near our forward 50 and yep "play on" Hawks go down kick a goal.
And we all saw that weak, cheating, crap, free against Glass for Buddy throwing himself forward. Glass had his arms bent behind Buddys back and as soon as he felt Buddy make contact with his forearm he raised his arms and fists because he knew Buddy was gonna do the old dive thing that all forwards do now to milk a free from the blind, guessing umps.:thumbsd:

:thumbsu::thumbsu: Exactly right MH. This is what Worsfold said, from the article on the Eagles web page:

Worsfold cited a lack of experience and cool heads in critical situations as being vital in allowing Hawthorn to slip away with a much-needed victory.

“I’d say a couple of young players that made decision-making errors close to the Hawthorn goal cost us,” he said.

Not criticising those two, and it's because of that stupid not being able to rush a behind rule, that they were forced into these errors, but they will get better.

What I hate, is a guy puts his body on the line, dives for the ball, and is trying to get it out, and then three opponents dive on him and HE is the one who gets penalized. That and those over the boundary shoves in the back that never result in frees.

The umpiring sucked the free against glass had nothing in it. I still don't think that was the reason we lost we didn't convert well and the Hawks did.

It takes away the incentive to go in hard and be first to the ball. It's absolutely bullshit. We may as well have 22 taggers and just wait till our opponent picks up the ball so we can immediately tackle him and gain a free kick for holding the ball.
To many idiotic rules is turning the game soft c*ck and making it so difficult to umpire with consistency that it's making the game a complete farce.

Interesting how Woosha said tonight, he expected a phone call from "The Geish" regarding the performance on Saturday night. Obviously he wasnt impressed at the slightest either.

Oh thank god i realised it wasnt just me. F***ing joke.

The bit that killed us most was early on in the last. The free against Cox in the ruck for absolutely nothing and he stopped before he snapped it at goal. The Hawks took it and ran, bang goal hit the front again, major momentum change. From then on in the last it got worse. The amount of times a Hawk player would duck their head and get a free while we had players like Butler have their head over the ball get hit and nothing happens.

Im furious at that, its a game that we well and truly could've and should've won when we were running the play from the end of the 3rd and early into the 4th. Then the blokes in red made sure they stopped it.

This was the turning point of the game IMO
