Why the hell didn't Fremantle draft Paddy McGinnity ahead of Josh Head. What really annoys me is that we redrafted Calib Mourish. I do not rate him at all.

What are anyone elses thoughts.

Agree on both points... I guess, however, that the only position we can take is - "wait and see, and trust that they get more hits than misses with these selections".

But they are rather uninspiring IMVHO....

we had to take mourish + dunn with last picks because they are under contract, So what that meant is because no other club took them we had to + time will tell with head + Mcginnity no need to stress over it now.

We didn't have to take them - we could have paid them out and be done with it. We have to pay the difference this year between Collard's 2nd round draftee salary from 2006, and his rookie salary that he'll be getting at richmond now.

I really think Dunn may work out okay... but Mourish I am not so sure about. :o

Mourish looked good in the pre-reason game against the hawks. We've got to pay him anyway, if he struggles again we free up a spot in the rookie draft in 12 months time so no big deal really. Disappointed with Head though. I guess the club see plenty of him since we share the same ground but has never looked like more than a handy wafl player. From our 10 selections in the 3 drafts we only have 5 guys who haven't been on an afl list which isn't ideal.

head is a more than handy WAFL player

he also has all the tools to succeed in modern footy ie height pace skill

neglecting the importance of a rookie draft is a great way to miss out on a Cox

or a Grover or a Hayden or a Sandilands or a Dodd.... it's not just your lot that have used the rookie draft well.

Mourish may come on... but I won't be holding my breath. There are just as many misses as hits in the latter parts of the draft / rookie draft - even from your mob.

Yep, no doubt. Freo have done very well too. I was using a superstar to make my point otherwise I could rattle off another 5 or so names from my club if you want to get competitive ;)

I was just highlighting that using a pick frivolously is pretty irresponsible

The rookie draft is a lottery.

There are always the odd success here and there - WCE and Freo have both had some real bargains - but many more have come and gone without making any impact.

OK fair enough - just feeling a bit overprotective at the moment... maybe a bit touchy-touchy/sensitive too... :o

I had two players earmarked - Masten and McGinnity... geez that turned out well. :( :p

But back to Mourish - who knows... the raw talent appears to be there, they just have to harness it I guess. Maybe the delisting and demoting to rookie might serve as a kick in the bum, and he'll pull his finger out and work his butt off. Or maybe he's just not very good and he'll be delisted in 12 months time. He was a pick 76 or something to start with so he was always just a "project" anyway. At this stage, all 6 guys drafted to the senior list in 2007 have a far higher chance of playing at AFL level in 2008 than Mourish, so if we are paying him anyway, may as well be on the rookie list as the senior list.

yep for sure IP, the draft was meant to be shallow this year so if some of these picks dont pull off we have room to clean out again for a good draft in say the next 1-3 years.

Yes that may be true but you look at the players that Fremantle have traded for or drafted. Often the case is when we trade a player to another club he goes away and becomes quite a good player at his respective club. The players that Fremantle have drafted some havent even played a game and then there have been players that we could of taken that have turned out to be superstars. i.e. Adam Goodes

Don't start that stuff. Every club passed on Goodes, just like every club passed on Kerr, S. Black, etc, etc. Clubs might be a lot better than they used to be but the draft is still somewhat of a lottery.

But it's a lottery that we've done pretty well in overall since 2000. There's a reason why we were one of the premiership favourites last season and it's not because everyone considered CC a master coach.

I don't know enough about any of these rookies we drafted to be jumping up and down saying we've made a mistake. I'm just going to trust that the club knows what they're doing. After all we've had a pretty good strike rate with the rookie draft - one of the best in the league.

And let's not forget we were the club that used a PSD pick on MJ (the original) when no other club thought he was worth drafting.

Thats always conveniently overlooked. We have done well with PSD picks before. Here's hoping to uncovering a good member of the Purple Horde.
We even picked up two with suitablility to be back up ruckman in Bradley and Connelly so we havent done to shabby ......
