X Box V PS2

OK, I know this has probably been done to death before but Im looking for some help. My kids are turning 5 and 8 soon and I was going to get a gaming console for one of them.
Was leaning towards an Xbox but then when my daughter say the new Singing Start karaoke game on the PS2 she wanted the PS2.

I'll be looking at modding whichever I get as I have a DVD burner, etc, etc, etc.

Looking at software it all seems to be pretty similar these days.

Not interested in online gaming.

When comparing the 2 Im mainly looking at the following things:

Software for "younger" kids.
Playing of copied games on it. The ease of cracking games, etc.
Reliability, price, accesories.

In Order:

Software for "younger" kids: GameCube. PS2. Xbox.
Copied Games: Xbox, PS2, GC, from general reports.
Reliability: All good.
Price: GC, PS2, Xbox.
Accessories: PS2, Xbox, GC.

I'd say Xbox, we just got one, partly because we just had a PSOne and didn't want another Sony Playstation.
Also Xbox is the latest console so get it, they are making games for it still...which for PS2 they might stop soon..

If you're kids are 5 and 8, I'd be going for a PS2...there aren't too many good games on XBOX for that kind of audience (unless you like them playing MA rated games ). If I was their age I'd definately want Singstar and the Eyetoy!

i've got a ps2 and xbox.
ps2 has the biggest library of games. it also has many more games aimed at younger audiences.
xbox and ps2 pricing is virtually identical.
the ps2 is a fair bit older than the xbox so naturally the xbox is more powerful, so games have better graphics on xbox.
at ages 5 and 8 i don't think you can go wrong with either.
for yourself, i'd go the xbox, its newer and has had more good games released for it over the last year than ps2.

in terms of modding, its easy to acquire and run copied games on either system. so thats not really a deciding factor.

The Xbox is cheaper to mod I think, plus you may find it hard finding someone to mod a Sony PS2, because of a recent court decision which made it illegal to mod PS2s.

I will not give information to some one who wishes to break the law and steal by making illegal copies of games.

You must be a good role model for your kids teaching them that stealing is ok.

I'd go the ps2 if I were you simply because it has so many games compared to X-Box which have far less, but yeah if you were intending to use it too, go the **** box.

Dunno about Australia, but in Japan, the PS2 section of a games shop is about 19/20ths of the shop, with Xbox fighting for the remaining 1/20th with the other platforms - i.e. far far more choice of titles with the PS2

I've always found the X-Box controllers to be a bit big even for my hands - don't know how 5 and 8 year olds would go with them though.

I love my Xbox, I like PS2 but I love my Xbox. I'd say for someone that young you would be better off with a GC actually. It's still a kiddy console and I don't care what anyone says it always will be.

Well that's probably true but there hasn't been a really good launch of any non Japanese console in Japan for a very long time, if ever. Xbox doesn't even get a showing over there because they're all PS2 freaks making it not the best example.

The old controller was probably a little big for the little handed peoples but the new and included Controller S is actually pretty small and little hands wouldn't have much of a problem with it, I'd say it's not really much bigger than a PS Dual Shock one.

Prince of Persia is actually really good, so that's a good deal sez I. Sadly POP was overwhelmed by the typical flood of crappy film licenses and generic shooters.
