Sure he's played well at times, but you just wonder how much he is helping us long term. You worry about his body breaking down in the future. Will he still be playing in 5 years? If he breaks down in 1-2 years, would those games have been better served going into developing a younger and less injury-prone player? IMO we are currently playing a bunch of players who won't be here in the near future - and he's one of them.

Yep, what this guy said

He's not keeping anyone out of the team and he's helping coach the players through Simpsons game plan on field.

Absolute bargain.

He's not keeping better players out of the team - but he's keeping younger players out of the team who will be better in the future. If Simmo plays the 'we lost a lot of experience last year' card when we suck next year I will lose my shit. Hey Simmo, stop putting so many games into dead wood.

Geez, people are even finding negatives in one of the positives for the year now...

Your so-called 'positive' is only a short term effect. I see little long term building - just calling it how I see it. Sorry I don't agree with you.

Should St. Kilda drop Nick Riewoldt? After all, he won't be there for there next push and therefore is holding back a young KPF from developing.

Ellis has a valuable role to play for the club going forward both on and off the field. Fitness permitting, of course; but given the long list of spuds on the list it isn't like Ellis is a waste of a spot.

Xavier Ellis is 26 years old. As long as his body holds up he's got plenty of years left in him. It's frustrating when people talk about him as if he's a 30 year old playing that last year or two of his career.

I think he has been superb for us this season, especially considering the circumstances in which he came. Definitely one of the smartest players in the side and he generally plays well in the big games.

Not sure why people have ruled out Ellis being in the side longer than short term? Surely it can't just be his injury history you're worried about.

Oh what, and playing Priddis each week IS doing the team a world of good is it?

You could apply every ounce of that logic of yours and it would apply more to Priddis then Xavier.

Priddis is 29, Xavier is 26. We have better replacements for Priddis waiting then we do for Ellis.

That's an unintentional derail fellas, promise.

On Ellis, I think he's been great this year. And I'd keep him in the team for another couple of years going by his output

He's 26. Can't fall into the Melbourne/Carlton trap of just going full on youngsters, he is necessary. He hasnt been dominant but is just classy and team first with everything he does, will be very valuable if we can start pushing up the ladder again, definition of Football IQ

Ah, the Demons model for building a premiership side. Delist anyone over 25 and play the kids.

I feel safe when he or Hurn have the ball at half back or in the middle.

Has also popped up for a couple goals up forward.

So far so good for X.

The more players with good skills in our team, the better.

Xavier brings that, so he's a keeper.

He's no doubt helping with the transition to the new game plane, essentially on on field coach.

Be pretty good for him to make the 100 games too this season after a pretty rocky career with injury.

I think that he is a positive moving forwards. We can hardly bag the match committee for playing him and not playing youngsters when we have 25 year old players like McGinnity getting games.
