Tigers hooked on Rex
November 18, 2004

RICHMOND president Clinton Casey is close to landing another big fish.

Casey has all but hooked the big fisherman, Rex Hunt, to stand as vice-president.

Hunt is expected to confirm on Sunday his intention to join Casey's ticket to fight the December 22 board election.

With Terry Wallace already on board and the No. 1 draft pick, plus other fancied recruits, going to Punt Rd on Saturday, Hunt's backing could prove decisive for Casey.

Hunt, 55, met with Casey and director of football Greg Miller at his home this week.

While he is yet to commit to Casey's offer, he admitted he was a strong chance to get involved with the club he played 113 games with from 1968-74 for 121 goals and two premierships (1969 and '73).

"Put me down as an 80 per cent starter at this stage, but I can tell you this - it's something I won't take on unless fully committed," Hunt said. "The Richmond Football Club is dear to my heart, and I'm as desperate as most other ex-players and all supporters to see it again become a genuine power.

"In Terry Wallace they have identified the right person to do that, and I would regard it as an honour to be involved in a Richmond revival.

"For that to happen, I will need to speak with my employers at 3AW but hopefully it can be beneficial to 3AW as well."

"People were ringing up 3AW during the year asking when was I going to get off my bum and help Richmond," Hunt said.

"Well, unlike some of my more famous teammates who bag everything, I want to be able to say I at least had the balls to have a go at Tigerland."

Casey is believed to have proposed that Hunt concentrate on media and membership issues, with the fisherman seen as a figure who could attract enormous publicity to Punt Rd.

If Hunt accepts the job and if the Casey ticket is successful, the 103.5kg extrovert (he's lost 20kg in five months) will be a regular voice on Richmond matters.

"But just like Eddie McGuire has done so successfully, I will be Rex Hunt from 3AW as well as Richmond Football Club," Hunt said.

Hunt is due to finish his 14-year career with Channel 7 as a fishing show and football host in two weeks, freeing up his time for 2005.

His larger-than-life exploits as a commentator have tended to overshadow his football career which began in 1965 when he was recruited from Parkdale.

He played all key positions but was at his best at centre half-back for the Tigers in 1972 when second in the club's best-and-fairest award and at centre half-forward with Geelong in 1975 when fifth in the Brownlow Medal count.

After 32 games for the Cats from 1974-75 when he transferred to Geelong in his job as a policeman, Hunt went on to play 57 matches (111 goals) for St Kilda between 1976-78, taking 21 marks at Victoria Park in a 1976 game.

He retired but returned with VFA club Sandringham in 1980-81, kicking 93 and 110 goals.

If this is true I will be thanking my mother for the rabbits!

Smartest thing Casey has ever tried to do and if it happens then this December election will be a huge Battle.

Go Rex !!!!!

I can start to hear the fat lady warming up her voice box for a Casey landslide win

LOL

I don't like the idea of Rex Hunt getting any power at Richmond. Have him as part of the coterie, but appointing him to president/ vice president is lunacy. His style is too much like Mal Brown, while he may get solid support, he also alienates people at an alarming rate. He also represents the old Richmond, that is so far outdated that it will cause another "save our skins" before we win another premiership. While the methods and people that made Richmond so successful 30 years ago are important, I shudder when I think that this club will be run the same way. I'm not saying the old Richmond should have no involvement, I'm just saying that they should not expect to run Richmond in 2005.

Guy's i wonder if C.Casey has been in the rfc forum on big footy i recall my self posting a thread (REX HUNT for president) ;) details below :

REX HUNT for President

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I reckon REX would do allright as president high profile person from media to the AFL vote 1 REX.... yebe de yebeda................

Reckon this will be fantastic. Rex has the ability to get the enthusiasm really gushing, which will help with memberships and our exposure. Could be Richmond's eddie, just a much better person.

This is magnificent news. I just heard Macek on SEN and he said he'd be delighted to have rex involved in some capacity at the club.

Why doesnt casey just do himself a favour and step aside and let rex run as president.

With the way the voting is structured, it is still possible to vote in some of Macek's team and some of Casey's. This means those fully on Macek's side can still vote most of his team in plus Rex...so long as Rex doesn't mind which team he joins.

I find it hard to envisage how the two massive ego's are going to function in tandem

Casey has proven repeatedly it's his way or the highway.I can't see Rexy boy standing for that.

I'm not exactly sure this is a good turn of events.

this is great news for the club !!!

a long term plan

Terry Wallace

Recruiting for the future with 5 picks in the top 20

Getting a media personality well known by all to head the sponsorship and membership area

Things are looking up

I will be voting for Casey's team.

I have the same feeling evo. Casey just brings in Rex to secure his ticket, but then two big heads will collide and Casey will give Rex a shove. Not sure if this will still get me over the line. Casey is an Essendon bloke, and still lost all our money.

I think it's rex that would give casey a shove. Casey has lost me for the simple reason he's financially destroyed our club and has lost so many board members.

I heard brian wood on sen this morning say that he heard case say he wouldn't cross the street to have coffee with half the current board. What the.......

While that is probably true in essence It's also sign of stupidity on Casey's behalf...if its true and he did actually say that.

How reliable is an opposing party's word ?

I was quite critical during the season that the likes of Hunt didnt put their shoulder to the wheel. Good on him if he can make a contribution, in particular the areas of membership and public relations then it can only be positive. Other clubs have shown the benefit of a heightened media profile to the bottom line in terms of membership and sponsorship, why wouldn't we take steps to follow suit.

He has made it clear he has no interest in leading the RFC, to suggest that he will polarise the club and send us to the wall is short sighted malicious and unwelcome attack on our great club.

Admirable intent, but I can't see Rexy convincing folks like Emirates, Sony, Lexus to get behind the Tiges. Maybe I'm wrong.

The fundamental failures of the Casey era remain - shocking financial performance, dictatorial, highly questionable corporate governance and he's a frigging essendon supporter.

We overlook Casey's apalling performance at our peril.

It's the alternative ticket for me, definitely. Almost worth buying another membership so I can vote twice.

Rex = extra exposure for sponsors. That's all sponsors are interested in. Rex wouldn't be there to "convince" anyone of anything. Rex would attract interest, publicity, media attention etc etc. Sponsor thinks "Perfect!". Membership department too.
