Thought a thread to keep an eye on up and coming aussie players would be good. JP Smith just won a big Junior tournament in Malaysia and Steven Donald was runner up. We have two junior boys in the top 5 in the world, 5 in the top 50 and 9 top 100. A big group of aussies start a men's futures in Bath, England tomorrow! Will keep u posted!:thumbsu: :)

TP, he is too old anyway to make it. Most very good juniors turn pro a lot younger.

Too old? He's 15 for crying out loud. No one is too old to make it. Some people just come out of no where... Eg. Benjamin Becker, he's respectable player in the top 100. Came from College tennis in the US. Was not a top junior I don't think.

Tomic's still very young. He can stay in juniors by all means.

Would like to see Lindehl hit the big stage though. Perhaps Moore as well. We need more representation on the pro stage.

The boys tend to stay in juniors til they r 17-18 girls a couple years younger. Roddick, Monfils & Murray played juniors til 18 Nadal didn't play juniors. All have made a successful move to seniors. (Arthurs played his best tennis post 25.) Most top juniors also start playing Futures (mens) in their last couple of years for an ATP ranking but focus on the junior slams. They tend to have more success than the ones who go through the US college system but some of them make it as well!

:D You can't actually be serious can you?

Read up on Donald Young, then get back to me about Tomic.

Since you probably won't bother reading up, here you are...

Donald Young Jr. (born July 23, 1989 in Chicago) is a professional tennis player from the United States. He has been the recipient of much press heralding him as the next great U.S. male tennis player after success on the junior circuit.

Young was, for a period of time in 2005, ranked the # 1 junior player in the world. He turned pro in 2004 but has only won matches in futures and challenger events, lower level pro tennis tournaments. Young, ranked 463 in the ATP rankings (as of February 8, 2007), has not yet won a match at the ATP level.

He currently has a career ATP record of 0-10, all 10 appearances coming as a wild card. While he has had a dismal start on the ATP level, his handlers have been criticized for pushing him too fast.

What's your point? I never mentioned Young! His failures are well doccumented. The USTA shattered his confidence by giving him wildcards into Masters events. He needed to cut his teeth in the Futures. Bernard plays a consistent junior game but has not developed any big shots yet! The hype is cos he is contracted to IMG!

:) Bernard Tomic is playing in Manila along with JP Smith No 1 seed, Steve Donald 2, Andrew Thomas 6, and several more aussies. Will be interesting to see how he goes in a group 1 tournament. His other ITF wins were group 3s and 4s and the Orange Bowl was under age. Apart from the Aussie Open this will be the biggest tournament he has competed in.:thumbsu:

Interesting results Tomic made the semis with some good wins but JP Smith won the tournamen. Two titles in a row. He should move into the 10 ITF juniors when the new rankings come out tomorrow. We will have three junior boys 9Brydan, Greg and JP)in the top 10 with Steven Donald just out! That twice the number of any other country! Bernard will go to about 75 on the list.

Keep us up to date :thumbsu:

I checked the rankings, there's a kid at 67 called Andrew Thomas, I think he destroyed me a few years ago.

Good to see these guys going so well. Used to have some good matches with Steve Donald and Andrew Thomas in the U/16 (they are about 2 years younger than me though). They were always good competitors and it is good to see that they have kicked on. Also played Lindal in the nationals twice. Unfortunately though Pat Nicholls who I thought was the best of the lot has quit and is now playing TAC Cup football for Sandringham.

:) Interesting match up in the semi of the Japan level 1 ITF Tomic plays Donald and Thomas is in the other semi. We will have a lot of boys up the top of the world junior rankings after Mondays points go on.:thumbsu: Pity I can't say the same for the girls!

I take your point but we want to go a bit better than uncovering the next Wayne Arthurs.:D

Donald gave Tomic a lesson in the semi  then lost a close final to Thomas. Some interesting results. Good to see Lindahl doing well,:thumbsu: he had a bit of a slump over the aussie summer.

Check out the latest Boys ITF rankings 4 in top 10 Oi Oi Oi:thumbsu:

Todd Ley was playing mens futures in the Aussie summer but wasn't getting through quallies. Hasn't Kicked on yet!
