Based on our list as it currently stands

C Bolton, L Barry, P Bevan
N Malceski, L Roberts Thompson, T Kennelly
A Scneider, L Ablett, J Bolton
R O'Keefe, B Hall, S Dempster
N Davis, M O'Loughlin, A Buchanan
P Everitt, A Goodes, B Kirk
D Jolly, E Barlow, B Mathews, N Fosdike

IMO I thought McVeigh had a pretty poor year, he was mainly used as a tagger for the opposition running half backs, which I think is and ideal job for S Dempster when he is fully fit.

Normally I would say Crouch as well, but I think he has lost speed and Bevan can now do the job on small forwards. Also love Teddy but hard to find a spot down back, I think we look better when LRT is there. Also I hope by end of the year Schmidt is in our best 22.

I think you're spot on with this 22. McVeigh is not a natural tagger, he was okay in 2006 but he just lost all confidence in such a role in 2007 and affected his head as well as his attack skills. He (along with schneider) is probably our best goal crumbers and he's more effective in the forward pocket leading out to the forward flank).

And you're absolutely right with Dempster, we need to give him some time in the forward line. We are one of worst teams this year in dealing with 'Ultra-flood's this year, and he's one of the few that can made a shot from outside 50 while able to chase dowing the running defenders.

I hope Schmit comes in and replaces Matthews. Depending on match-ups, I think Bevan could take over Matthew's current oppononents and depending on the opposition, we can call up Jack.

Honestly, I think Crouch is gone - he was a liability in every game that he played this year for us, great service for us and it's time to give the youngsters a go.

I will put Malceski in the centre, we need to exploit his great footskills

I've omitted Matthews, Bevan, Mcveigh. Mcveigh was omitted in favour of Schmidt.

mate think with your brain instead of your heart. Do you honestly rate Matthews a better defender than T Richards?
furthermore Dempster needs to be given a go. The kid has a booming kick and needs some game time

I rate him better than Bevan, McVeigh or Ablett. If we need the KP then bring in Richards or Dempster for one of these three.

I hope Currie, J White, Bird, Dan O'keefe, Moore have good preseason games so they are in the team for round 1 that would be exciting for us to be running around with kids.

I think Benny is still in our best 22 for now - he still performs solidily in his run with roles - and for some reason I thought his disposal was much better this season than in years gone by. I think Anlett has more upside though. Bevan and McVeigh are much the same but Bevo for me is hard at it and I like the way he plays.

But I agree Dempster needs to be given a run in the role Macca had this year, he is a much better kick than macca and has good size and pace.

I cannot split the difference between bevan, mcveigh or matthews.
But surely you cannot put Ablett in that category.

Ablett at least has shown that he can kick a goal here and there and has the ability to win his own ball.

Benny can kick a goal here-and-there, see compilation

And we finsish 7th again with the same team
Do we play the same game plan as well
If we do we won't make the 8
Bite the bullet and change

He just does his job better than anyone else we have could. If we recruit say a Ryan Crowley or Brady Rawlings type player then Benny would need to find something better to do, he plays roles on the big jobs and does it well. We need a player like that.

Mathews is an unfashionable player, but I thought he had a good year in 2007 (after being on the brink in 2006).

Clearly the match committee did as well; he finished equal 7th in the B&F.

I think you have to put it into perspective. I agree a highly disappointing season, but these guys need to be given first crack to prove themselves.

It was the first season that I can remember in a long time where injury really hurt us, the boys looked tired from the last 5 or so years in the finals, with little to no pre season. So 2008 is a new kettle of fish

Remember we lost 2 games by less than a point and drew one other so the luck wasnt really with us this year - and because the hawks tanked round 22 we drew the pies, who are our bogey side.

The guys have done the job in the past, sure, if they dont perform half way through the year then time to rebuild. i would have thought the natural development of guys like Barlow and Schmidt would hopefully have them playing 22 games next year. But I dont see the need in ripping a pretty formiddable side apart, on our day I would have thought we could easily compete and beat the cats

I agree Mathews was very good towards the latter part of 2006 when he came back from injury.

I think he was definitly one our most consistent players this year.

SouthSwans if you don't mind me asking what is it about Matthews as a footballer that you find attractive ?
Didn't he finish in the top 10 in the B & F again.
Quite obviously the coaching staff ( and some of us) see something in him that you seem to blindly overlook constantly.

Let me teach a little about Benny Matthews. Benny is not a flashy player. Not the type of player that you & many would like to see all our players be. Perhaps like a Nick Davis that can do brilliant things at time but then unfortunately can't do the less attractive things like follow team rules & sacrifice his own flashy game for the betterment of the team.
Benny Matthews sacrifices his game week in & week out. Has done so since he pulled on the No. 4 jumper under Eade. He is ONE player that does the team things brilliantly & that is to look after his man & negate him no matter what.
That is the instructions given to him by Roos & that is ALL Benny has to do. Just to do his part on any given day.
Now.........................if the other players followed the intructions that they were given in certain games, then Benny wouldn't be noticed so much by supporters like yourself. Unfortunately he represents those footballers that you never notice when your winning, but are the first ones to cop a caning when we lose. But it is the more flashy players that might kick two goals from 6 possesions in a game that we should be having a look at instead of a player doing his defense deeds as instructed by the coaches.
Nick Davis & MOL are flashy at time & exciting but by gees they frustrate me when their immediate opponents run off them because they can't chase. Benny is particularly brilliant at covering for these guys when they can't chase. In other words he watches two opponents & sometimes three.

So ease up on Benny because the fact that he was up there again in the B & F only proves that we are right & he is in the top ten players at the Swans.
Cheers & watch him at his craft next year with that in mind. He exemplifies discipline to a tee!:thumbsu:

no, would not have bevan in there, and i think richards HAS to be there, although i agree on mcveigh
and i think i'd get j bolton closer to the ball, back to his in-and-under role, and maybe get demspter on a wing, but i suspect i'll be flagging a far different, younger, fresher and probly more experimental "best 22" in a few weeks

yeah, crouch is gone, mathews is gone, and put leo on a flank, halfback probly, he's past his best, although he would never lack courage

this is exactly what i want to see too, let's get some excitement in the form of new young blood, like so many other clubs have, even richmond have got some dash in their kids, where's ours?
seriously, if we miss the boat on youth in 08, we really ARE headed for some dark days

agree on ablett, don;t understand the amount of flak he cops from swans fans, he's got some fire in his belly, is desperate (watch the last 5 mins v geelong in the 05 elim final) and can kick it a mile.....

then go and look at the losing final to c'wood
mathews has been a good and loyal servant, but his time has come and gone
There was one bloke that night who was above par and that was Goodes, but somehow Mathews cops the flack for the 21 other blokes who wore the red and white that night. It's been that way for years.
