There was one bloke that night who was above par and that was Goodes, but somehow Mathews cops the flack for the 21 other blokes who wore the red and white that night. It's been that way for years.

nah, i disagree....mathews was really ordinary, along with bevan, crouch and leo....the rest were sub-par apart from goodes, kirk and LRT

the thing with mathews is he's what? 29? he's not going to get any better skills wise, and will continue to slow down in terms of speed and his mental processes, and it's not like he's a super-quick athlete now, or ever....

Speed has never been his thing, nor has it ever been that important to his game and the jobs he does. He's adequate skill-wise and has a very good football brain and that is the most important part of his game.

not being quick to begin with and slowing with age DOES equal a problem, just because he may be your fav player doesnt mean your opinion of him is accurate. its time sydney start making some tough decisions with players that are in mathews camp.

While I agree that this has been one of Matthew's better years - I really can't see him offering a lot over our youngsters in the next few years. He's had a good start to the year - when both he and his opponents are unsighted, then it's a good game for him. He's a great set-shot for goal and I'll give him that.

But his disposals and decision really shows up in the latter half of the season, and I can recall at least three drop marks into our 50 from our kick-in that resulted in an immediate turnover (and eventually resulted in a goal for the opposition), and two of them are because he didn't attack the ball hard enough.

I don't believe in the 'sacrificing his game' perspective. His game is very limited and in my view, he is probably the most 'selfish' player on the field. All he worries is himself and his immediate opponent. When his side is out-numbered in a counter attack, instead of try to help out his team mates that are out-of-position, he stays on his man - it seems to him that it's okay if we concede a goal, as long as his man wasn't involved in it.

For someone who's that limited in attacking ability, he should be setting a lot more shepherds, but all his does is stay on his man. When there's a 50/50 ball in question that would result in a goal for either of team - he stays on his man. When his team mate makes a mistake and his man is loose, instead of trying to help out - he prefers to allow that opponent to tear into our fifty because he 'needs' to stay on his man.

For someone's who is only into the side for his defensive duties, he's involved in very few tackles, forces very little turnovers and does not get a lot of hard ball gets. And remember the fact that Matthew almost never gets the opposition's best midfield player - Kirk or Ablett gets them. He usually gets the third best midfielder in the opposition and usually the slowest one.

Yes, he's handy for us, but hardly replacable. Bevan can easily replace him - and in my view, that's where he needs to be. With LRT back, and if Leo Barry is still performing, then C.Bolton should take the small/medium player or play as a third and make use of his attacking attributes with the likes of Kennelly and Malceski.

Bevan should be thrown into the midfield - in place of Matthews.
