No disrespect intended to West Coast, but my mind has firmly moved to the first week of the finals. There is bound to be much discussion over the final 22 who get the nod. Some selection issues include but are not limited to:
  • Playing Wojo or not;
  • Hawkins;
  • Varcoe, Byrnes, Gamble or Prismall;
  • Any injuries (touch wood)
So who is your ideal 22? I've had a crack below.

B. Milburn, Scarlett, Harley
HB. Enright, Taylor, Mackie
C. Kelly*, Bartel, Corey
HF. Chapman, Mooney, S.Johnson
F. Stokes, Lonergan, Gamble
R. Ottens, Ling, Ablett
IC. Hunt, Blake, Selwood, Rooke**
EM. Wojo, Prismall, Varcoe

* Provided he is fit. If not Prismall comes in.
** Real toss up with Wojo. Went for Rooke on toughness and most probably greater match fitness

I thought I'd try. But it's way too hard. I agree with the players listed in the team above (+Tomahawk), it's only a matter of who is emergency.

Assuming all fit, as anything else obviously causes unavoidable changes, the best team is:

B. Milburn, Scarlett, Harley
HB. Enright, Taylor, Mackie
C. Rooke, Bartel, Corey
HF. Kelly , Mooney, S.Johnson
F. Stokes, Lonergan, Chapman
R. Ottens, Ling, Ablett
IC. Hunt, Blake, Selwood, Wojo

EM. Prismall, Varcoe, Gamble, Hawkins (well, that's 4, but they're the options....)

Lonergan is the only one I can see that is realistically in danger. Would love to see Hawkins in for a taste. Love what Varcoe brings, but can't find a spot for him. Desperately want Prismall to play in a Grand Final and not leave, deserves it, but these guys must be hoping for injuries. Don't think he'll make it, and will leave.

I think the balance is important. If we want to increase firepower, bring in Gamble, the forward line looks far more dangerous with him in & Kelly on the bench/rotating. Then again, if we need defensive pressure, Varcoe would be better - but Gamble, for me, covers this to some extent and kicks more goals. Just don't know how you fit him.

Lonergan would be damn unlucky, but would love to see Hawkins have a trial at least. Just to see the boy in action. Sucks that they both missed the Grand Final last year, both deserve it.

I'd prefer to just say "our best 22", as I'm also still thinking about giving West Coast the mother of all hidings on Saturday.

Here goes nothing anyway....

B. Milburn, Scarlett, Hunt
HB. Enright, Harley, Mackie
C. Kelly, Bartel, Corey
HF. Chapman, Mooney, S.Johnson
F. Stokes, Lonergan, Rooke
R. Ottens, Ling, Ablett
IC. Taylor, Blake, Selwood, Prismall
EM. Wojo, Gamble, Varcoe

I think Prismall deserves to be in our best 22, to me he's ahead of Gamble in the pecking order. The key to me is strength, he's stronger physically than Gamble and is yet another midfielder for our rotations - and our midfield is our biggest asset. Rooke may not have Varcoe or Byrnes's speed, but is obviously much tougher and more seasoned. And as he showed against Hawthorn he can kick pressure goals when required.

The only other alteration I could possibly make is Hawkins for Lonergan, but on current form Lonergan really shouldn't be dropped. It would be nice to see Hawkins get some finals experience though.

Agree with Partridge with the exception of Wojcinski, I feel game breakers like David must play. He also holds far greater experience than Prismall.

Prismall would be the unlucky miss for mine.

In saying that I doubt we will have a situation with a full 22 and I am happy with Prismall in the side.

B: Hunt, Scarlett, Harley
HB: Mackie, Taylor, Milburn
C: Enright, Bartel, Selwood
HF: Johnson, Mooney, Chapman
F: Gamble, Lonergan, Stokes

FOL: Ottens, Ablett, Corey

Int: Blake, Wojcinski, Kelly, Ling

see now thats the problem, i couldnt fit Rooke, Prismall or Varcoe in there and i wouldnt have a problem with either lining up.

It's 50/50 but I would probably leave Harry out, because I think we have the option of moving Kelly and Corey back if necessary, with Ottens playing a kick behind the play. Frankly that is negative thinking and I doubt we would bother or need to respond like that - other teams really have to counteract us. I suspect that the selectors tho' will have Harry as IC and Prismall as Em.

How the team lines up is obviously dependent on the opposition.

This looks about right IMO. I would have Wojcinski in for Taylor depending on the opposition.

That would be the sister of all hidings as the mother of all hidings was on their own ground round 13 :D

But here is my 22

B. Milburn, Scarlett, Hunt
HB. Enright, Harley, Mackie
C. Kelly, Bartel, Corey
HF. Chapman, Mooney, S.Johnson
F. Stokes, Lonergan, Rooke
R. Ottens, Ling, Ablett
IC. Wojo, Blake, Selwood, Prismall
EM. Gamble, Varcoe, Taylor

And also would like Gamble in there against the nm but there just isn't enough space for that. Damn we just got too many good players :-). Can't think of 1 single weak spot in the team.

This is mine too.

As much as I like Taylor, I cant find a spot for him, even if we are playing Hawthorn. Either Mackie or Harley are probably just as capable playing as second and third tall defenders.

Wojcinski provides variety that gives us another dimension. Agree with Partridge's thoughts that Prismall should remain, as he is another strong-bodied midfield we can rotate through there.

I'm not sure whether we need another player to rotate through the midfield. As it stands we have Ablett, Bartel, Ling, Corey, Kelly, Chappy, Selwood, Stokes, Stevie J, Enright all capable of playing midfield roles. I think potentially having Gamble in adds that x factor up forward. Is a very clever player and has a knack of finding the footy.

Wojo is an intriguing one. His run and dash is pivotal when he is fit. Do we risk him on the biggest stage? He has a history of soft tissue injuries and if not fully fit, could leave us a man down.

I reckon some are being a bit hard on Harry. Did a good job on Roughhead last time v Hawks and some of the goals from Hale were not his fault. Hall was the only one to actually give him a pasting.
