"you have no right to criticise the players unless you've played at the elite level". God knows how many times Don Scott repeated this when he was a commentator.
That hoary old line that ex footballers throw at you to defend their kind from any form of criticism. " You can't criticize a footballer 'cause you've never been out there and played".
Therefore, you can never criticize a politician because you've never been a politician? (Have you done the decision making hard yards in the big house?)
You can never criticize a plumber who botches a job because you've never stood in a drainage trench before or, been a plumber?
You can never criticize a crap music CD or concert because you don't play an instrument?
Of course you can criticize a footballer for their stuff ups, inadequacy, and lack of talent or mediocrity.
Same way you can criticize your surgeon when he removes the wrong organ from your body or when your mechanic completely stuffs up your gear box.
There is no law against criticising incompetence. As for the line that ex footballers constantly repeat that you need to have the knowledge of there profession to be able to offer criticism.
Bull****. You don't need to know a thing about Civil Engineering theory to know that the drainage out the front of your house is inadequate and is flooding your place.
How precious are footballers? "you can't criticize me or my kind 'cause you've never stood your ground preparing to take a mark with the pack hurtling towards you".
Don't need to do it to 'see' mediocrity for what it is. Whether it be a politician, plumber, doctor, chiropractor, councilor OR THOSE BLOODY THIN SKINNED FOOTBALLERS. We the punters who invest so much emotional time and energy into the players, riding the highs and lows, have every right to criticize them when they blow it. The same as we endlessly bag politicians when no of us has done any time in parliament........
