im pretty sure most of his kicks are 15-20m kick sideways or backwards ... very hard to screw up and you are looking a very small data set, he averages less than 3 kicks per game this year ... heck, he averages 4 over his whole career

you also cant say he is a good kick for goal ... he has only kicked 6 in his whole career

He's a defender, his opponent gets a 15-20m kick and its a goal. Besides if you have watched Freo anytime before the last couple of years and you would know that a 15-20m kick in the d50 is actually quite easy to screw up. A dish off to Luke or Duffman is generally a better option. If Dawson has to kick the ball more than 4-5 times in a match then the other blokes aren't working hard enough or he's too far away from his man.

i was referring to dawson kicks and not 15-20m kicks in general

most of dawson's kick that have hit targets that i remember this season are
  1. after a relieving mark or third man up
  2. aimed to an outlet player (sideways or backwards) 15-20m away
  3. with little or no pressure
  4. and mostly outside the d50 (because of our full forward press)
he should nail those and disputes couldhavebeen's assessment that dawson is a good kick because as most people know, it is not and the best option (that we both agree) is always for him to handball it to a running namely duffield or c pearce.
i do agree that we have bad history with 15-20m kicks in d50. how many times did we gift richmond a goal in the dying mins from kickins?!?

And before you, and your apologists, get stuck into me for picking on you...

If I came on here and claimed that player X was averaging 3 goals or tackles a game.....and another poster showed me up as a muppet with the true statistics, I would firstly withdraw my comment with an apology and then slink back into my hole and consider my next post more carefully.
You can slink!? ;-)

That's the way they're drilled and that's the way I like to see it unfolding. To be fair the Zac castigators have pulled their heads in a fair bit,as have the 'pea-hearted Hill' and 'DPearce is shit' brigade.
Now Alex on the other hand....

I think his offensive ability has improved a bit in the last year as well. No gun, but not a liability with the ball in hand anymore

That's funny, because I thought he was more offensive before he got here and now I don't find him very offensive at all.

I'm calling bullshit on this.

All this love for Dawson needs a bit of balance really guys .

He gives away at least 3 free kicks almost every game and looks to hand ball to a team mate when ever he can even though he's a good kick and rarely misses a target.

The guy is seriously good fulll back but Brian lake or Silvagni he ain't.

I think this is part of the problem with the muppet supporter base.... once you understand that he is never going to be a S.Silvagni or a Mcpharlin, you can then move on and appreciate what he CAN do. He is never going to be a champion, but he doesnt need to be. Garrick ibbotson is never going to be a champion of the game, and look at the way he has added to the team this year.

The beauty of a Ross Lyon led team, and I dare say the main motivator for Zac comning to fremantle.. you do not have to be outstanding in any one particular facet, you just have to understand the game plan, be willing to put the team first, and do your absolute best.

I put Dawson in the same category as someone like Eric McKenzie from the slime, except mckenzie would never be able to hold Tom hawkins to zero goals in a final.

Actual stats (not made up):

Crowley gives away exactly the same rate of frees against as Dawson.

McPharlin, Duffield, Fyfe, Ballas and Walters are all within 0.3 of Dawson.

All pretty useless players, eh?

Guys really I love having Dawson in our team and If you took the time to read my posts on this subject
and took notice of the smile with the" there abouts" post maybe you would see that the responses are a little over the top . Whitey is as expected but the rest of you that suprises me.

No Im not the white headed beard guy with the faded purple shirt on the train or Harvey:)

Bushie for a guy who thinks he is so smart your post just keep coming .
Such a shame theres so little in them that inspires.

Just pointing out a statistical fact which you fail to acknowledge you muppet. Despite many other posters, apart from me, pointing it out to you last night.

Let me know when you do anything other than inspire ridicule.

Fair call. I misunderstood.

Couldn't find another thread for this but.
Josh Jenkins last night
6 disposals, 3 kicks, 3 handballs, 1 mark, no score

Well done Zac, you gave him an absolute bath for three quarters and a bit.
Anyone questioning his worth should watch more games (not that anyone in this forum will bag him much but cops a lot for player who consistently does his job every week)

Zac Dawson has been a brilliant recruit. Definitely wonderful list management from whomever made the decision....probably Ross, I presume.
Without question, just plays his role so well! You don't want him kicking too much, but I think he knows his deficiencies!

Always been a good pure defender but I reckon he's improved as a footballer since he got here. Doesn't seem to make the obligatory howler or two per game anymore, and he's become fairly tidy with his disposal.
