The Tuohy situation is a bit baffling to be honest. Is it the club decided he would be shopped, pre-Gibbs statement, thinking he was one of our only movable assets? Have they low-balled him to get him to leave in a trade or has he got a touch of the greeds? Was the Geelong nomination a curve ball SOS and co. didn't expect?

I really am unsure Geelong have got anything that will be close to his worth that they are willing to give, especially given their Deledio interest; Wells has said just that. How does it get done?

If he goes to Geelong for way unders then the whole trading / destination club thing Browny is talking about continues to stink to high hell.

If a shitty draft pick in the late 30's is all they have to offer I wouldn't be against shutting up shop and either sending him into the draft or keeping the door ajar for him to sign our 3 year deal. I doubt he is unhappy at the club and these things have happened before.
Two shitty 30's draft picks (Kerstan) = 1,000 pts (pick 18), which is about right for Tuohy. We shop those picks to GWS for Marchbank and everyone is a winner.

Else use the two picks to upgrade our picks in the draft and/or trade #41 and #56 for two of Honeychurch, Lennon, Hvorat, Gardiner, etc.
Port are desperate to get rid of Hartlett for cap reasons. Would #41 be enough to get it done?

Yeah im with you. Just up his deal a little and he would stay you would think.

3 years is a decent contract and we have cap space.

100% agree. It pisses me off that we low-ball his contract with potentially 0 return. He is currently an integral cog in our defense, generates run and can play tall or small. People keep saying SOS has some masterstroke up his sleeve with regard to this, but I just can't see how we have the upper hand here. Geelong have nothing to offer (unless you call Motlop a masterstroke - I'd call it folly), North are ready with a contract under his nose if Geelong deal can't be done, meanwhile we need him. If we can't get adequate compensation (and likely won't), why give him up for peanuts. PAY HIM WHAT HE's WORTH FFS!

PS. MarcSmurf3, Barass70, ericpascoe - can you guys add anything to this one to set our mind at ease?

We don't need him, his position is one of the few we have an oversupply of quality in. We gave him a three year deal (what he originally asked for) after North offered him a four year deal for more money. Then his managed shopped him around and Geelong came sniffing and he fancied his chances of winning a premiership. Move him on, we will get something decent.

  • Other than Doc - whom we need across Half Back, who do we have with run, footskills, and can play tall or small like Tuohy?
  • He's uncontracted and not a free agent, how are we going to get anything other than cast offs for him??

I'll miss his outside 50 goals. If we have a number of back pocket players then why don't we try him forward? Give him the extra year, its not like contracts are worth anything these days anyway.

Darcy Lang:

Much has and will continue to be said about the man who amassed 43 punishing disposals in his first game as a Cat.

But Geelong’s 30-point Easter Monday victory over the Hawks was far more than just the day of St. Patrick. It was a coming of age for two rising stars in hooped navy and white.

20-year-old forward Darcy Lang and fellow goal sneak Lincoln McCarthy, 22, both shone on the big stage of the MCG in arguably their best performances as Geelong players.

As good as Patrick Dangerfield was, the final term hero was Lang with three fourth quarter goals, and it was his forward of centre running that proved a real difference when most were out on their feet.

“We always knew that if we [did] what we had been [doing] all pre-season we were confident we could run out the game,” Lang said post-match.

McCarthy bobbed up with two crucial first half goals which set the tone for Geelong’s dominance across the opening two quarters.

“We knew we really had to come at them [Hawthorn] really hard and aggressive because when they start holding possession and using the ball really well that’s when we know they’re going to run over the top of us,” McCarthy said.

“It was a great win.”

Tuohy is almost 27. You're kidding yourself if you think Tuohy can play tall and small (he can barely play either). Ciarán Byrne is one, Buckley another. We will also be picking up another like for like this year, albeit a young version. Sorry but Tuohy simply isn't worth the type of money and contract length he is getting at other clubs. We are rebuilding and 27 isn't in our age bracket.

Let's see what the club gets for him before saying we can't get anything.

The real question is with Tuohy leaving and Jamo gone, is this the end of Grumpy Old Defenders?

That was a truly terrible podcast.

That it was, do you think thats why Jamo got cut and Tuohy isn't getting offered anymore money?
If so, surely Dylan Buckley will be worried after that terrible video series he put together. lol

i am still hoping against hope that Tuohy stays, but as it becomes more inevitable i am staring to come to terms with this.
don't know much about Lang but a promising young mid sounds like a decent enough return.

god that would be snooze-inducing
SR: Welcome to Grumpy Old Defenders, I'm Sam Rowe and each week I'm joined by another old man in the backline - Jacob Weitering! Haha get it Weiters?

JW: Yes, I do get that joke. It is funny because I am not actually very old as you are probably aware, Sam.

SR: .... Right. Anyway, moving on, we'll jump into our first segment which is called "Get to know your teammates!" We are fortunate to be joined by newcomer to Carlton, Caleb Marchbank. Great to have you Marchy.

CM: Thanks guys, I'm glad to be here.

JW: Caleb, I recently read that the system of time used by ancient Romans was fundamentally similar to our modern 24 hour system; however, day and night was always divided into two lots of 12 hours, meaning an hour in summer when the daylight was longer lasted much more than the standard hour now. How do you feel that system would work in modernity?

CM: Uh. I guess it might. I like summer.

JW: As do I. Longer working hours may have a positive effect on economic output during the summer periods, counteracting the usual dip experienced in winter.

SR: **** this, I'm out.

SR: APOLOGIES I DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAME OVER ME. PLEASE CONTINUE.
I've made a couple of subtle changes to fix this.

Darcy Lang was pick 13 only 2 years ago. He's shown a bit. Not a huge amount but enough to think he will become a solid AFL standard player. If someone offered us pick 13 in this years draft for Zac we'd bite their hands off, despite that being a complete and utter unknown.

I think that's a myth. He is easily our best small lock down defender. Bryne is coming back from an ACL and isn't a proven player (I still rate him extremely highly). Simpson is not a good one on one defender and Doc we don't want having to guard the best small forwards that takes away from his game.
Who else is there? Buckley? Come on! If Doc gets injured our backline will be up the creek. I think the best be can now hope for is for Geelong to upgrade their second rounder and get that for him.

Sorry but if you think Tuohy is a great lock down defender, you need to watch more football. He is damaging off half back, but good lock down defender he is not.
