The Dale Thomas trade

Would have been nice to get more out of him on field this year.

But off-field what a pro. Has not put a foot wrong and has helped get some mojo into a pretty introverted playing group.

Collingwood supporters might not be surprised by this but it was amazing to see him throw his body around this season. He literally injured or near injured himself 7 or 8 times trying to lay crazy tackles this year. His commitment was first class.

Other teams may think this is normal, but I have not seen a Carlton player do what Thomas did on field in terms of sacrifice. Tells you why we have not been top 4 for a long time.

Thomas will be nothing but good news with the example he sets both on and off the field.

Firstly, you kind of hope to open a thread like this and see that the OP has actually put some thought into it, rather than leave one line of bait and leave it for others to do the dirty work. Calling it a trade kind of just highlights how much thought went into it.

Secondly, Thomas was never expected to perform well for the season. We were hopeful of him playing half the games and working his way back to somewhere near his best from 2015 onwards. He played some better footy at the end of the years. On track so far.

Thirdly, comparing Thomas and Betts is silly. A small forward vs a midfielder who can also play forward or back. They don't fill the same hole.

Fourthly, you can't take Betts' 2014 output and suggest he should have been paid for that level of football before he had actually played it. After 2013, he wasn't worth it and did not fill the roles that we recruited Thomas for.

The two players should not be talked about in the same conversation. They aren't relevant to each other.

Where has Thomas played the majority of his footy this year?

It doesn't matter what positions they play from 2012 Betts output has been allot better than Thomas's.

Yay, Betts won year one.

Neither team got close to a flag.

We'll see how the next three years pan out for each player.

Carlton would have been crazy to throw 4 years at Betts as a 27 year old forward pocket.

Said from 2012. Look at the 2 players output Betts has clearly been better.

Nah, lets throw 700k at an injury prone midfielder that's done nothing for the last 2 year.

Silly silly thread give him at least this year before you post this rubbish your only upset because all your premiership players hate your coach and don't want to play for the club anymore.

Collingwood didn't even think he'd play a game this year. Like Boyd Thomas is expected to earn his money in the later years of his contract. Anything we got from him this year was always going to be a bonus.

I'm actually surprised he played as often as he did.
Collingwood knew he'd play but a combination of injury, projected output, cash and Thomas indicating that change may be best was enough for them not to match the dollars Carlton offered.
FWIW I don't think it was a bad move for Carlton.

Weren't they saying that any footy he played last year was a bonus?

This year will be telling.

Signing Thomas probably cost Carlton the ability to match WB's offer to Boyd.

If it is crazy to throw 4 years at a 27 year old forward pocket then what is it to throw 4 years at more money at a 26 year old outside midfielder whose best footy was two years behind him and who was coming off a career threatening injury?
Read that Chapman was cooked...

Thomas has bought in on and off the field.

Betts, Garlett, Waite, Robinson, Bootsma and Lucas all failed to commit and/or put in the required effort to remain at Carlton.

We have the cap space with these players departing and our list demographic. Better buy than being compensated with a second round pick for Betts. Swans didn't receive a first round pick for Malceski who was AA and signed for a similar contract. Win to bring Thomas, Docherty and Everitt in for second round picks.
The Blues admin believe they are in their premiership window. Bizarre club.
Pies believed their coach was the man to lead them forward.

cost the Pies chance to use pick five and a player to trade for Boyd.

I don't think we were ever interested in Boyd.
We are getting Darcy Moore this draft period, who is rated a top 3 draft pick by many AFL recruiters.
With Pick 5, we could end up getting Wright.
Wright/Moore V Boyd?

Yes he is being payed way overs, every club has overpaid players, I'm sure the OPs club Geelong has a couple as well. Thomas is one of many Collingwood or ex Collingwood players who have not fired a shot since 2011, hence they are going backwards at an alarming rate.
