And the 2nd prelim was on the Sunday too
Ahh yes back in the days when they played finals during the day. Quite strange to think you get 2 day finals in the first week and not another one until the grand final.
Wish they would ditch the Saturday night final in week 2 and 3 and play it during the day instead.

Actually just thinking about it do they play the sat prelim during the day? Might have been wrong on that one.

That empty Sunday in Week 2 kind of sucks, but I suppose it allows state leagues to get some exposure with their finals

Depends who plays- last few years it has been sat night when involving two vic teams, but if there is a travelling interstate team is has been Saturday twilight

Not sure where all this 5v8 has to be on Sunday and 1v4 has to be on Friday dogma comes from.

1v4 was on Sunday in 2007 for example.

Whenever the afl says they gave 1 a certain timeslot because they deserve it, that is not true. It is just a rationalisation after the fact.

The main thing is that you cannot have a team playing on Friday and a team playing on Sunday play each other the next week. Then you can't have two games at the same ground in Saturday. And a team playing r23 on Sunday can't play the Friday game. All other combinations are legit possibilities

Friday: West Coast V Hawthorn PS
Saturday arvo: Fremantle v Sydney PS
Saturday night: Richmond v North Melbourne MCG
Sunday arvo: Western Bulldogs v Adelaide ES
This will be the fixture. Lock it in. AFL will schedule Syndey in the arvo so they can travel home that night if they lose

The biggest concern with the Swans playing Saturday arvo in Perth is if I remember reading correctly they have a midnight lock out at Sydney airport.

So the game would finish around 7 pm EST, include a 4 to 5 hour flight on top of it and that's already close enough to midnight and not including travel time to the airport and post game media etc. Either way they wouldn't get out of Perth until early Sunday morning unless a special flight is organised.

Correct - basically the options are the red-eye leaving close to midnight, or staying the night and flying home the next day. The latest flight in the afternoon leaves around 4pm.

Given Freo are planning on resting 11 players this week, there's no issue with them playing on a 6-day break in the 1st week of Finals given half of their team won't be playing in rnd 23!

Friday Night:
Freo v Sydney

Saturday Arvo:
West Coast v Hawthorn

Saturday night:
Richmond v North
(Or Dogs v North)

Sunday Arvo:
Dogs v Crows
(Or Crows v Tigers)

Only problem with this is that it doesn't align with the winner of 1v4 getting a Friday night prelim.
