Go out and get Pickett and Garlett...throw them on the forward line for 10 years lol.

I want to see some excitement machines....we have been very vanilla up until now which is fine but wouldn't mind going a high risk/high reward option this year.
Laverde is an excitement machine! If we get him with our first pick I would be wrapped. Then Garlett with our second and then I'll cancel my next viagra order!

My preference for our first 4 picks at this stage are:

1. Jayden Laverde
2. Clem Smith (as a small forward)
3. Dean Gore/Touk Miller
4. Nakia Cockatoo

Lavarde ahead of Ahern? Or Ahern gone by our pick?

What do you think of the guys i listed on the last page? Only really get to see them at champs but thats also the big stage. Smith was very good in the 2nd game as a small forward who just has a physical presence.

Laverde for his added size. When in doubt go the bigger guy I think.

Smith I think can add some defensive pressure to our forward line that we lack without Kingy. His silly free kicks won't be as hurtful and he can be reigned in a bit.

Calcium Man

Daniel I really like and would snap him up as a rookie. He's obviously a risk with his height but I think he's a top 3 pick if he was above 180cm.

Only seen a bit of Rose and would depend on how we see Lennon and Gordon in the future IMO.

Gore I obviously like as I had him as 3rd pick.

Read I don't think we need despite the talent. Not sure we need a young ruck with soldo and we have enough 200cm KPF's

Garlett is a fave but 1st pick is too early and 2nd he's probably gone. (Used Knightmares draft as a rough guide when picking who was available)

Keitel I find hard to rate.

Blakely if available if grab in the 2nd round and grab a small forward in the 3rd but I think he'd be gone.

Webb has nice skills but is probably a bit too inconsistent but if available in the rookie draft is worth a crack.

Cavka I'd consider in the 3rd round though not sold on skills.

Castagna again not sold on skills but has the pace we desperately need.

The thing about Daniel is that he's probably defied the odds his whole footy career, even though it's likely coaches have told him he's never going to make it. Therefore he probably has a fantastic attitude, work ethic, and will to succeed which reduces the risk slightly. I reckon if he gets a spot on any list he will be hell bent on proving that he can make it as an AFL player, maybe more so than others. I always have time for those sorts.

What are your thoughts on Menadue and Drummond, tigs?

I wouldn't be opposed to grabbing Drummond if he's still there in the rookie draft or a late pick. Showed a few signs in our VFL team and is quick and skilled.

I haven't seen as much this year as the last few, but whenever I've seen Menadue he's only been ok and he's very skinny.

I really feel like FJ is about to nail that 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounder this year, where would we be without him? he's a star.

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm you need the  if it is.

But seriously the people who slam FJ are the first people to praise Griff over Ty, love Astbury's work ect... Its not easy to get all your later picks right but Griff, Astbury, McBean, S.Edwards, McDonnough, Grimes and despite a poor performance on the weekend Batch are all very good picks after the 2nd round. Also Dea should be ahead of Morris but thats more personal opinion.

Yes it would have been nice if we grabbed Parker instead of Batch or Carlisle ahead of Griff (drugs help ;) ) but comparing 1 pick to 1 of a possible number taken afterwards is ridiculous IMO and takes nothing into account except drafting is easy in hindsight.

This year we've also got the guy from Geelong via Carlton so our recruiting will hopefully only continue to improve as FJ continues to become more experienced and builds a strong team around him.

Derek Hine and Rendell are two guys who get massive amounts of praise around here for building lists that couldn't make the 8 this year too ;)

Does anybody know if our recruiting department has been beefed up or if they have changed their methodology for the 2014 drafting period somewhat?

I ask in light of our improved financial position of late.

We added the ex-Geelong 2IC. I always forget his name though.

Not sure about the methodology though sounds like their may finally be a move towards speed.

I like it, Laverde has grown on me big time

Are you actually aware of the success rates across the league for picks outside the second round?

It basically plummets like an exponential curve, with round 5/6 off memory only having a 6% chance of generating a player with any half decent career (forget the benchmark that was used, but I think it was around 100 games played)

Not saying we shouldn't be critical of drafting, of course we should. But the notion some peddle here that anything less than a 100% hit rate is failure a joke.

but but I want a star for not much... ;)

From memory it was 50 games.

I at one point went and did a whole lot of research for success rates of teams in the national draft and most hover in the 25-40% range. We were about 37% from memory, although i may be a little biased to some of our players.

Has Dimma seen the light? Or are FJ and co just going to bring in some pace anyways.

I'm still not convinced we are extraordinarily slow. Lids is fast, Cotchin chased down and tackled Matt White the super speedster (damn Grig giving away a free), Martin has faster 20m sprint time then Rohan, Grimes is exceptionally quick, Ellis looks very quick these days but thats probably as much fitness, S.Edwards ain't slow. But i do agree we maybe lack blistering pace but it's more players willing to run with the ball that look fast and we miss them outside of lids and Ellis. Polec is not super quick but will run with the ball making him look faster and you could say the same about Rohan v Martin.

I'm only going off what people have said Dimma mentioned in his presser.

I don't think we are a slow team. But we don't really have anyone who has speed as a weapon that teams would be really worried about, outside of Lids.

Just watched it then. Saw nothing about injecting pace.

Said he knows what we need going forward but won't tell the media.

mmmm.... but we looked terribly slow on the weekend.

If pace was not the issue, then it's laziness... a far bigger blight on the team.

Laziness is a big reason. It was what happened early in the year too. We looked bloody quick at times in our 9 game winning streak, Adelaide 3rd quarter, Sydney 1st and 2nd quarters ect...

Like i said in another thread Port are showing the value of one of the best fitness guys in the world. When he started they had 1 player run a sub 10 minute 3k now they have 9 i'm pretty sure i heard on the radio. Burgess has a philosophy of taking players to their limit then pushing them past it. Their mentally shot players from the 07 grand final look like new men.

Cheers!

Is Reid just another young ruck? Was very useful up forward and I see him long term playing the type of role Ty currently does. Soldo despite the hope is a long shot and if he does make it will be Ivvy's replacement.

I strongly feel we should be taking a KPP/ruck player at least 1 every draft or at worst once every 2nd draft. We didn't take one last year so we need to have another developing behind McBean or if it all goes wrong we will be hoping to do all our tall drafting in one draft ala 09 and waiting 5-6 years for it to come together. If we don't take Ried I'd hope we look at Keitel, he has a lot of the tools to work with but is still 3 or 4 years away but to have him developing in the VFL is the way to go.

Castagna had pretty decent skills from what i saw just shocking decision making especially when running full tilt. Otherwise was pretty neat with his kicking coming off half back from stationary or small runs.

Ideally my draft would be

1st pick - Petracca
2nd pick - McCartin
3rd Pick - Wright
4th Pick - Durdin
5th Pick - Ahern
1st Rookie - Lavarde
2nd Rookie - Smith
3rd Rookie - Duggan

;)

But seriously

1st pick - Ahern then Lavarde - Ahern has more class around F50 and great vision and kicking reminds me of Billings a bit without the marking ability, Lavarde has apparently been very good at TAC but how are his footy smarts? Solid but not super.
2nd pick - Smith - The reason WA got back into the 2nd game just attacks the man and ball hard and provides constant pressure, no good of HB but perfect up forward. Byron Picket clone
3rd Pick - Keitel/Gore - Developing tall forward and back or if gone get Gore who will be a very good inside mid
4th Pick - Miles upgrade
1st Rookie - Daniel - Will prove a lot of people wrong but still a risk at 167cm about whether he has the strength to do what he does at u/18 level at AFL level
2nd Rookie - Webb - Inconsistant yes but that class and kicking into forward 50 is something we really lack. Pretty athletic too
3rd Rookie - Whiley - next years Miles
