Or what happens in the showers afterward...

Fair but even Matt Thomas got a fair run at it.

Yeah, I think ZOB is stuck in that "too good for state league, not good enough for AFL" zone but he does deserve a good run at it so we can make a decision one way or the other about what we want to do with him. Especially with Beams out and the season down the drain. Give him the last 5 games I reckon.

Reserves Wrap: Round 17

Zac O’Brien
Inside mid all day, he was clearly best on ground. He’s had 50 possessions for the day but in that a really total game. Really good around the contest, laid seven tackles, had 10 clearances and 10 inside 50s. His work rate was exceptional throughout the day, his ability to fight in the contest and provide the forwards an opportunity with his crumb work as an inside mid was terrific. He got tagged in the second half, but still had an influence on the contest throughout the day.

Tom Cutler Tommy again played as an inside mid. He had a lot of the ball but probably didn’t have the impact he probably should have throughout the day. Still got to work really hard on his running and his contest skills where he finds himself walking a lot throughout the game. We just need to see more effort and work in this area from Tommy at this level to be able to play senior footy.
Josh Clayton Again played half back. It was his best game of the season to date and gave his the job on Rose one of the Swans’ really good forwards and got the chocolates for the day. Much improved in the contest, he laid a couple of tackles on the day which was his goal. Still got to tidy up his ball use particularly at half back so we’ll work on that throughout the week with his kicking but good to see him improving week to week now that he’d gone back in defence.
Luke McGuane Luke continues to improve and get better after coming back from his knee injury. He’s had 24 possessions this week, he played a little bit behind the ball at times throughout the day just to stem the bleeding from the Swans. His ability to lead from the front, he was really good in the contest for us. He still had four shots on goal, he kicked 1.3 but certainly puts himself into selection for senior mode.
Josh Watts He had a difficult opponent on the day. He played on Dean Towers who kicked 2.6. He probably didn’t have him for the entire game. It certainly wasn’t one of his great games. He still had some ball but needs to do a lot better with his efficiency. We’re hoping for Josh to bounce back this week.
Mitch Golby Not as much impact this week, he played wing/ half-back. He was probably a little bit untidy with the ball. Still a solid game without as big an impact as he’d had in previous weeks. We’re hoping for him to bounce back this week against the Suns.
Archie Smith Continues to grow and evolve as a ruckman. He picked up another 16 possessions this week which was a great result for Arch. He had a lot more impact around the ground. He needs to improve his contest stuff in the air and his stoppage work and his centre square bounce work and set the tone for our mids with his aggressiveness in there. All in all an improvement in the back half of the year.
Billy Evans Inside mid early, had no impact playing in the contest playing there. He probably fumbled a little bit Billy. He only had five possessions to half time as a midfielder so we moved him to half forward and he played as a fifth at stoppage where he had a lot more impact. He kicked two goals for the day and probably could have kicked three or four if teammates had of given him the ball at certain times. He had more impact particularly around the ground in terms of his transitioning to get forward and at the contest that way. It’s still a learning curve for Bill, as a mid, but now he’s starting to understand what the running and transitioning is all about.
Matt Hammelmann A key defender for the day. He was OK. We’re seeing some improvement from Matty week to week particularly around his contest work. He had a couple of good engage-separates which he’s been focusing on in the contest. There’s still some work to do around his HIT in defence against some opponents about engaging them at the right time. He’s certainly learnt a lot since going back and getting involved in more contests. Hopefully he can transfer that into being a forward in the future.
Trent West More time in the ruck this week. Not jumping still though, but more impact around the ground as well. He had 14, was involved in more ruck contests throughout the day. He’s pulling up that much better with his knee, his lateral movements and his ability to cover the ground is improving. It’s just now about gaining more confidence and more game time to hopefully put himself in senior selection at the back half of the year or the last few weeks anyway.
Brent Staker A quiet day for Stakes. He was OK on the hit up, but probably needed to impact more contests aerially. Either through marking or bringing the ball to ground as a forward. Probably needs to organise his forwards a bit more in front of the ball and make sure they’re organised in structure. Only the one goal. Hopefully he’ll rebound this week and impact the scoreboard a bit more as a key forward.

We have to play O'Brien this week.

Maybe he has his cards marked, or whatever, but if you're going to send the message to the group that you get rewarded for doing the right things, then if a player is getting such a glowing write-up that has to follow through into senior selection. Particularly with Beams' spot just sitting there to be filled.

I'm not his biggest fan but I couldn't agree more. He's clearly the best performed player who doesn't get a regular game. And it isn't as though the senior 22 is full of blokes in tip top form.

I personally don't think O'Brien will make it but he deserves a shot to prove himself.

seems from the above that bringing in McGuane for Leuie might be the option and then maybe play Freeman as the backup ruckman.

mcgaune has kicked 1.3 this week and 3 goals last week. 3rd game back I think?

Sounds like West is a long way off seniors if he isn't jumping yet and still pulling up better with his knee.

Martin thrives on the long ruck minutes, same as Leuenberger. But yeah, Freeman could pinch hit.

Freeman, McStay and McGuane is probably the best structured forward set up we have had available all year.

O'Brien must simply come in and play purely in the guts. Need to reward his form, he's worked bloody hard for a spot and performed week in, week out in the reserves and is far from our worst in the seniors when he gets the call up. He puts in 100% effort always and tackles well, not something I'd say for the vast majority of our players based on some players 2015 output.

This.

I'd love to see him make it after the craziness that has been his 2015. Killing it in the reserves + is clearly passionate about the club. Lots assumed after the whole Leppa thing that he wouldn't be retained, but he has worked his ass off for another shot. Lets see what he can do.

Yeah, there's a host of players I'd have ahead of him to leave at seasons end at this stage. We need midfield depth, and at the very least he'd be a handy depth player to have if injury strikes.

Just heard that one of my good mates Billy Evans has been elevated to the senior list and should be debuting this weekend. Really hope he can perform for you guys!

Oh wow, don't think that's public news yet, but well done to Evans. A shot in the guts for O'Brien though if he gets overlooked after a 50-possession game

I had noticed evans had got decent write ups in recent weeks in those reserves write up. Seems to get 25-30 possessions each week (aside from this week)

Fantastic News for the kid! Hope he cracks in and does you blokes proud down at Sandhurst!

Fair but even Matt Thomas got a fair run at it.
Fair point. Although I'm sure most Richmond fans would argue that Thomas got too much of a run at it.
Happy for ZOB to get a shot at it for the rest of the year, but he really needs to add another string to his bow if he wants to make it at the next level. Needs to add the ability to play somewhere other than as a pure inside mid. Look at Aaaron Vandenberg as an example.

From memory, I would have thought he'd be averaging 15 - 20 disposals a game in the reserves, I wouldn't have thought his form is good enough to warrant senior selection.

My thought is the quick impact he had in front of goals. The thought being if he can come in rotating through the middle and playing the goal sneak small forward type player, he could be handy this week. After all, we need goals asap lol

Here's a few sentences from the coaches wrap on Evan's the last 5 weeks (Round 17 in full was posted above)

R:17 - Inside mid early, had no impact playing in the contest playing there. He only had five possessions to half time as a midfielder so we moved him to half forward. He kicked two goals for the day and probably could have kicked three or four if teammates had of given him the ball at certain times.
R:16 - "Hovering around a 25 possession game as an inside mid."
R15 - "The highest contested possessions for the day, seven clearances – a really good effort which we’re asking a lot from him to do and had 25 disposals."
R14: Inside mid for the day. Strong around the contest again, applying his art very well in that area of his game – not coughing it up, being clean around stoppage. He’s probably now turning the ball that he gets into possessions,
R13: - A little bit quieter this week, still solid in and around the contest through clearance and first possession with opposition mids.
