The AFL must be getting nervous about GWS numbers, down over 2,000 on same time last year for a club that they are already tipping in over 60% of the income for.

I am not sure whether the ACT component has really kicked in this year yet, the ACT push was later than last year.

There will always be a team that comes last and a team with the smallest membership, also there will be teams with a huge upside, does GWS have a bigger upside than say Western Bulldogs or even GC ?.

i am tipping membership may be smaller or about the same yet Showground crowds may be bigger this year, that sounds about right for Sydney

Compare them to Sydney in 1985 during the clubs fourth year.
OK. What was Sydney's in 1985?
1985 is ancient history.
Compare anyone's figures now to then.
They are more than 5 times higher now.
So, if GWS are 5 time what Swans were in 1985 they are on track?

Updated membership graph - all teams included

Time to Hammer out an updated graph I reckon.

A few observations;

- Richmond has really flattened out in March, I guess those price increases were the driver behind their February numbers.
- Carlton has finally come to the membership party, selling MORE THAN TWICE as many memberships as any other club in March.
- North Melbourne are slowly getting away from Melbourne and St.Kilda, Bulldogs still a way off.
- GWS are catching Gold Coast
- Numbers in general seem to be picking up across the board, no doubt due to the approach of the Round 1.

Move an expansion team with an untapped market of millions to an untapped market of 350,000. Genius.

GWS actually manages to get a decent crowd in Canberra. And by that logic, the AFL should have made another brisbane team, considering the entire brisbane population eclipses Gold Coast.

How can you be so shortsighted? Gold Coast is growing more rapidly than Canberra and is presently larger. The region of GWS is much larger than Canberra and is growing at a fast rate too. If the AFL had put their two expansion teams in Brisbane and Canberra, they would have been ridiculed for not doing their research and rightly so.

Despite the slowness of memberships so far, considering we're still in a skeptical media environment that regard us as invading on soccer and league heartland, to be infront of half of all NRL clubs in terms of membership numbers is actually pretty satisfying, and the NRL season proper is well underway.
