Eh, let's start this thread I guess.

Remember, this thread is for news articles/possibly tweets if half-reputable and discussion posts will be deleted - feel free to chat about the articles in the trade thread. Note that just because I post a story here doesn't mean I don't think it's probably rubbish (Denham, Ralphy, Waldron etc.) but it's worthwhile having a place to keep these stories together.

Also I won't be posting stories that break down to "Ex-AFL media personality thinks the Lions should pick up so-and-so" if there's no evidence that we're actually interested in that player.

Gun free agents still unsigned, big Dog wanted, Pie set to stay (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 07/09)

RESTRICTED free agents Ben McKay, Tom Doedee and Jade Gresham are among 48 remaining players on the free agency list this year as clubs wait on the top-liners' big decisions.

The free agency list has more than halved in players since it was officially released by the AFL in April, with Doedee, McKay and Gresham the only remaining restricted free agents.

Doedee is weighing Brisbane's interest against a shorter-term offer from Adelaide, while McKay has been fielding interest from Essendon, Sydney, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide. Gresham has also been linked to the Bombers and Hawks.
SUN TO SEEK NEW HOME

Gold Coast key forward Chris Burgess is expected to look for a new home during the off-season after winning back-to-back Jim 'Frosty' Miller Medals.

The 27-year-old is contracted at the Suns in 2024, but it is understood the South Australian will explore a fresh start after being starved of opportunities across the past two seasons, managing only three AFL appearances despite dominant form in the reserves.

Two clubs have shown genuine interest in Burgess, with a couple of others keeping tabs on the West Adelaide product.

Adelaide has maintained an interest in Burgess since he joined Gold Coast along with Josh Corbett as a pre-draft selection at the end of 2018, while St Kilda has also kept tabs at different times. Brisbane, Richmond, West Coast and Hawthorn are other clubs considering key forwards this off-season.

Gold Coast is believed to be open to keeping Burgess, but the Suns are stacked with key forward depth and likely to offload some players to help acquire the draft points required to secure the four academy products they want to select in November, including underage star Jed Walter who is expected to play plenty of senior football under Damien Hardwick next year.

Mabior Chol has two years to run on the contract he signed when he moved from Richmond, but as Gettable revealed last week, he is assessing the market after falling behind Levi Casboult – who is expected to secure another contract once the dust settles on the season – in the pecking order, with the forward line built around Ben King and Jack Lukosius.

After booting 63 goals in 2022, Burgess is up to 55.20 from 18 appearances this season, kicking four more in last weekend’s qualifying final win over Brisbane at Heritage Bank Stadium.

Burgess has played 36 AFL games for the Suns across five seasons in Queensland, but managed only one in 2023 after just two last year, despite dominant VFL form, and is set to find a new home. – Josh Gabelich

Tom Doedee weighing up ‘big offer’ from Brisbane amid luckless Saint’s Lions link: Trade Whispers (Ben Waterworth, FoxSports, 06/09)

DUO LINKED TO LIONS

Adelade free agent Tom Doedee is “weighing up a big offer from Brisbane”, according to 7 News Melbourne reporter Mitch Cleary.

Doedee remains unsigned for next year, despite the Crows’ campaign ending over a week ago and the defender’s 2023 season cut short by an ACL rupture in Round 12.

The 26-year-old last month publicly expressed his desire to stay at Adelaide, but added the serious knee injury he suffered in June had thrown a spanner in the contractual works – and the Adelaide offer in front of him was short of what he’s after.

Doedee had been linked to Brisbane across recent months. Speaking on Channel 7’s Talking Finals program on Tuesday night, Cleary said Doedee had recently spoken to the Lions about the possibility of playing for them next season.

“The Crows are desperate to keep Tom Doedee. He said that he wants to stay at the Crows, but he’s now weighing up a big offer from the Brisbane. He has spoken to the Lions in recent weeks,” Cleary told Channel 7.

“It is always a concern when you get to this stage of the season, the Crows have been out for a week, his season has been finished for the best part of a couple of months after a knee injury – still unsigned. So watch this space.”

Doedee isn’t the only rival-club player Brisbane is circling, with off-contract St Kilda defender Nick Coffield also linked to the Lions, according to AFL Media.

Coffield, who was selected by the Saints with Pick 8 in 2017, hasn’t played an AFL game in two seasons, firstly injuring his ACL before subsequent soft tissue injuries hindered his return.

The 23-year-old managed four VFL games late this season, averaging 23 disposals and six marks for Sandringham Zebras.

Cal Twomey’s Trade and Contract Update on Dow, Ratugolea, Tomlinson, Gresham and More (Cal Twomey, SEN, 07/09)

Kai Lohmann (Brisbane)

“We asked Western Bulldogs list manager Sam Power about him on the show (Gettable),” Twomey began.

“The Dogs are still in the mix for Kai Lohmann. He’s held off his decision until the end of this year.

“The only first-round pick from two years ago to remain unsigned. Does have Victorian interest and I think the Dogs are in that market.”

Crow nears call, Chol on club radars, athletic Dog weighs options (Riley Beveridge, Callum Twomey, Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 15/09)

FREE AGENT NEARS CALL

ADELAIDE'S restricted free agent Tom Doedee is nearing crunch time on his contract call as he weighs his future.

The Crows key defender has long been linked to Brisbane, whose interest in Doedee was revealed on Gettable in June, with the Lions looking to add to their back half.

Adelaide has a short-term offer in front of Doedee but the 26-year-old has been open in stating his decision-making process could come down to more security being presented at rival options.

Sydney shapes as a club that could pivot for a late pursuit of Doedee if it doesn't secure fellow restricted free agent Ben McKay, with the Swans one of three clubs McKay is considering alongside Essendon and Hawthorn. The Bombers have held long interest in McKay, having met with the key defender in July.

Collingwood is another club to have been linked with interest in Doedee as it surveys that market.

Doedee's second knee reconstruction will likely see him sidelined for the first half of next season. – Callum Twomey

CHOL ON CLUB RADARS

GOLD Coast forward Mabior Chol remains a trade option for clubs who are looking at adding to their tall forward and ruck stocks.

Chol has two years remaining on his deal with the Suns, but as reported on Gettable last month, the former Tiger has been scouted as a trade prospect.

Adelaide and Brisbane are among the clubs who have shown interest in the 61-gamer.

Chol remains a part of the Suns' VFL finals series and is expected to focus on his future at the end of their run.

The 26-year-old's management last week released a statement on Chol, saying that he was enjoying his time at the Suns but "wants to be a regular at AFL level".

"We are aware and have been approached by a number of clubs that are interested in Mabior due to his high-end talent to see where everything sits," said Ashley Blair from Pacific Sports Management. – Callum Twomey

Race for Chol could be down to three as Lions’ interest cools; Blues brace for double exit: Trade Whispers (Ben Waterworth, Fox Sports, 02/10)

Rival’s Interest in Sun ‘Not All That Strong Anymore’

Brisbane’s interest in Mabior Chol has cooled, reports SEN, as the contracted Suns forward prepares to make a call on his footy future.

Chol is contracted to the Suns until the end of 2025 but played just eight AFL games in 2023, with star forward Ben King’s return creating a selection squeeze.

Subsequently, a four-club race emerged for Chol between the Lions, Crows, Kangaroos and, most recently, Hawks.

But SEN reporter Tom Morris on Monday morning said a Chol move from the Suns to cross-town rivals Brisbane now seemed unlikely.

“He met with Hawthorn and North Melbourne last week, as well as Adelaide – the Crows came to Melbourne to see him. Adelaide have a three-year deal for him, North and Hawthorn might have a three-year deal for him (too),” Morris told SEN Breakfast.

“I’m not sure Brisbane’s interest in him is all that strong anymore. I really think it’s Hawthorn, North or Adelaide that he’s got to choose – he’s got to choose this week where he wants to be traded to – and the Gold Coast Suns will facilitate that.”

Chol was an integral member of the Suns’ VFL premiership campaign to date, booting 40 goals and averaging 13.2 disposals and 5.4 marks from 16 matches. He kicked five goals in the Suns’ preliminary final win over Box Hill then four goals in the grand final triumph against Werribee.

Robertson undecided where his future lies (Mitchell Woodcock, The West Australian, 03/10)

Brisbane midfielder Deven Robertson is still undecided if he will sign a short-term deal to stay at the Lions or return home to WA to play for West Coast.

Robertson, 22, is fresh off a 13-disposal, one-goal performance for the Lions in their heartbreaking four-point grand final loss to Collingwood on Saturday at the MCG.

He will have little time to mourn the defeat though, with the Perth product out of contract and needing to make a decision ahead of the trade period which opens on Monday. West Coast have reportedly tabled a three-year offer to the midfielder, who is the nephew of Eagles premiership player and former captain Darren Glass.

Sources told The West Robertson, pictured, would have been almost certain to sign with the Eagles if the Lions had beaten the Magpies on Saturday. The Lions are believed to have offered Robertson a short-term deal to remain at Brisbane but competition for spots in their midfield is set to be fierce in the next few years and he could look elsewhere for more opportunities. Son-of-a-gun Will Ashcroft will return from a knee reconstruction next year, while his brother Levi is tearing it up at junior level and will likely be drafted by the Lions in 2024.

Robertson played 16 games this season to take his career tally to 41 since being drafted with pick 22 in the 2019 draft. But he has struggled to find a regular spot alongside the likes of dual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley and Hugh McCluggage. The Lions traded heavily to draft Robertson four years ago after he captained WA to victory in the under-18 championships and won the Larke Medal as the player of the carnival. West Coast will be hoping to add the big-bodied midfielder to their developing side that includes recent John Worsfold medallist Tim Kelly as well as young guns Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett.

Race for Doedee Narrows to Two as Cornes Praises Crows' List Call (Seb Mottram, SEN, 03/10)

Sydney is out of the race for Adelaide defender Tom Doedee, with Brisbane and Collingwood the two suitors left.

SEN’s Tom Morris broke the news on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Feed, with Doedee remaining at Adelaide highly unlikely.

Dodee missed much of the season with a ruptured ACL and is out of contract with the Crows.

The 26-year-old enters the player movement period as a restricted free agent, meaning Adelaide can match a bid for Doedee and force a trade.

But with the versatile tall essentially out the door, the race for his signature for 2024 and beyond is down to the two Grand Finallists of 2023.

“We’re waiting on a decision from Tom Doedee and it’s been common knowledge that Collingwood and Brisbane are the main two clubs (interested), but the Sydney Swans recently reignited their interest when they missed out on Ben McKay,” Morris told AFL Trade Radio's Trade Feed.

“I can tell you that the Swans are no longer in for Tom Doedee, it is down to legitimately two. It’s Collingwood or Brisbane.”

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund added: “It’s not going to be Adelaide (either). It’s down to those two because they are prepared to give him – we think – the contract that he can’t quiet acquire at Adelaide.”

If Adelaide’s doesn’t match a bid, they will receive draft compensation for Doedee’s departure.

It comes as Kane Cornes praised the Crows for sticking true firm on its current contract offer for Doedee.

It’s understood Doedee, who has played 82 games for Adelaide since debuting in 2018, had his contract offer modified after his knee injury earlier this year

“I loved what Adelaide has done… they could have easily offered Tom Doedee five or six years and he would of stayed because he’d be looking for that security at his age and durability issues,” Cornes began on SEN Mornings.

“Adelaide has (likely) said, ‘we’re probably not confident you’d see out a (longer term deal)…’ So I’m assuming they would have offered a three-year deal on reasonable terms and he’s decided to go somewhere else and explore options.

“I think it’s a good move for Adelaide and maybe some clubs are starting to learn (not to offer long-term contracts).

Doedee has been in Adelaide’s leadership group since 2020 and was widely tipped to succeed Rory Sloane as Adelaide captain earlier this year before that role went to Jordan Dawson.

West Coast confirm interest in rival trio: AFL trade news (Mitch Keating, Zero Hanger, 03/10)

Robertson is less likely to find himself at Lathlain Park in 2024 but still has a decision to make on his future as the Eagles circle.

Having been starved of opportunities in Brisbane's stacked midfielder at times this year, Robertson could slot into a starting role under Adam Simpson via a move to West Coast, who again would need to broker a deal with the Lions to acquire the onballer.

"We'd like to bring him to the footy club. We've had some discussions with his management," O'Brien revealed.

"His sole focus has been on getting through Brisbane's finals campaign, understandably, he wanted to park everything until that was done.

"Now that the season is finished, we'll revisit all that and talk with him in the coming days... we think we can come to a resolution fairly quickly.

"We're hopeful at this stage but as I said we've been respectful and given him the space he needs. We'll have some more detailed discussions in the coming days.

"Brisbane are trying to retain him as well. So Dev's got a decision to make there and his focus has been on playing and getting through to the grand final."

Lions Waiting for Answer from Eagles Target, Veteran to Make Imminent Call on Future (Andrew Slevison, SEN, 04/10)

Deven Robertson will provide an answer to the Brisbane Lions about his future in the coming days.

The 22-year-old, who is out of contract this year, is a target for the West Coast Eagles this trade period but is yet to confirm his plans for next year and beyond.

The Western Australian product played 16 games for the Lions in 2023, including in Saturday’s Grand Final loss to Collingwood, for a total of 41 across four seasons.

Brisbane’s GM of footy Danny Daly says the Lions are hoping Robertson stays as they wait for an answer either on Wednesday or Thursday.

“We’re hoping to get an answer from ‘Dev’ either today or tomorrow,” Daly said on SEN Breakfast.

“We’ve been in constant contact with his management group over the last two or three days. Dev has been out and about for a couple of days, enjoying life (post the Grand Final defeat).

“Hopefully today when he’s a bit fresher and a bit more settled in the mind, he’ll come to a decision today or tomorrow.

“But we’re hoping he stays. He’s an important part of our team, he played 16 games this year so we’re hopeful that he stays with us.”

Robertson was selected by Brisbane with Pick 22 in the 2019 draft.

The Lions added several players last trade period with the likes of Josh Dunkley, Conor McKenna and Jack Gunston coming in, but Daly says they won’t be as active this time around.

They are in the mix for Adelaide defender Tom Doedee but short of that they will not be active as they prepare to draft Will Ashcroft’s talented younger brother Levi as a father-son in 2024.

“Probably not as active as last year,” Daly said of the club’s trade plans.

“We’ve obviously got the Dev Robertson scenario and the Tom Doedee one.

“Outside of that, unless something pops up really late with players that might be out there for us, we probably won’t do a hell of a lot.

“We’ve obviously got Levi Ashcroft hopefully coming to us next year, so we probably need to save up a few points for next year to get him as well.

“So nowhere near as active as last year.”

Veteran Dayne Zorko is another Lion whose future is not set in stone right now.

He is finishing up another one-year deal and at 34 years of age, retirement has been floated.

However, Daly is confident that Zorko will play on again in 2024 with a decision imminent.

“We’ll sit down with him today, once we do our team review,” Daly said of the former captain.

“Myself and ‘Fages’ (Chris Fagan) will sit down and have a chat with ‘Zorks’ and see where he’s at, what he’s thinking, what we’re thinking and hopefully we can resolve that pretty quickly this afternoon and move on.

“No doubt he wants to play on and I think Zorks showed in the back half of the year, especially the last few games, that he still hasn’t lost any of his pace and was important for us during the finals series.

“I’m sure that will be worked out today.”

Crow's call: Free agent nominates preferred new home

ADELAIDE restricted free agent Tom Doedee wants to land at Brisbane in the off-season.

As reported on Gettable back in June, Doedee had long been linked to the Lions while Collingwood had also expressed an interest and Sydney has been in the market for a new defender.

AFL.com.au's Trade and Draft expert Cal Twomey reported on Wednesday that the Crows defender has made a decision and wants to end up at the Lions.

"The interest from Brisbane has been strong and consistent throughout this year," Twomey reported on Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio.

"This is good business by them, I think."

Doedee is a restricted free agent, meaning the Crows have the option to match an offer for him when the Free Agency window opens on Friday.

The 26-year-old is currently recovering from a serious knee injury meaning he won't be available for the early part of the 2024 season.

He told people in the last couple of days at the club that he was going, but then sat down for his exit meeting and indicated that he was staying!"

Gunston exploring move back to Victoria (CODE Sports, 13/10)

Brisbane forward Jack Gunston has expressed an interest in returning to Hawthorn.

The Lions are aware Gunston, 31, is exploring a trade home to Victoria after one season up north.

Brisbane has not made a decision on his future but wants to keep him.

Gunston was overlooked for selection in the finals and had questioned whether the Lions’ style suits his play.

Gunston played better in the second half of the year after stepping away from the senior side to complete a training block.

It is unclear whether Hawthorn wants the veteran back.

Gunston does not want to retire and is holidaying overseas.
