AFL Trade Period 2022: Follow the latest updates from deadline day (Jon Ralph, Jay Clark and Dan Batten, Herald Sun, 12/10)

LIONS UP DUNKLEY OFFER

Brisbane has improved its offer to the Western Bulldogs for Josh Dunkley in a move that could pave the way for him to move north.

The Herald Sun understands the Lions have now offered their No.21 draft selection and their future first-rounder without asking for a selection in return.

The Lions had asked for the Dogs’ pick 39 back in a move which the Dogs believed was deliberately antagonistic.

Brisbane is hopeful that they can secure Dunkley, and while they had hoped to maintain some of their points for father-sons by securing pick 39, they do not need that pick to secure Will Ashcroft or Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions can go into points deficit next year in a move which would push their second-round selection back in the order if they do not trade in other picks.

But the decision to offer two high picks will at least give the Dogs food for thought as they consider sending Dunkley into the pre-season draft.

The Lions have tried to secure a higher selection than 21 but teams with top-20 picks are not willing to move back in the draft order.

AFL Trade 2022: Why sending Josh Dunkley to the pre-season draft won’t work for the Bulldogs (Jay Clark and Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 12/10)

Western Bulldogs have asked Brisbane Lions to throw in their future second-round selection in the latest trade demand for gun midfielder Josh Dunkley.

News Corp can reveal the Bulldogs want pick 21 and a future first and second-round selection from the Lions for Dunkley.

The Lions have offered their No.21 draft selection and their future first-rounder without asking for a selection in return.

The Lions have two extra future second-round selections from Geelong and GWS following earlier deals, but would prefer not to part with them for Dunkley.

Brisbane had offered 21 and a future first-round pick in exchange for Dunkley and No. 39 from the Dogs on Tuesday.

The two clubs remain locked in strong discussions about his future, with Dunkley’s manager Liam Pickering adamant the Dogs won’t release him to the draft for nothing.

Brisbane is hopeful that they can secure Dunkley and while they had hoped to maintain some of their points for father-sons by securing pick 39, they do not need that pick to secure Will Ashcroft or Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions can go into points deficit next year in a move which would push their second-round selection back in the order if they do not trade in other picks.

But the decision to offer two high picks will at least give the Dogs food for thought as they consider sending him into the pre-season draft.

The Lions have tried to secure a higher selection than 21 but teams with top-20 picks are not willing to move back in the draft order.

Brisbane made a pick swap from 15 back to 21 to secure more points for their father-sons, aware they had to have enough draft collateral to secure Dunkley and the father-sons.

Saints in the mix but Lions remain front-runners for McKenna (Andrew Slevison, SEN, 09/11)

Brisbane is the front-runner for Conor McKenna, according to SEN’s Sam Edmund.

Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary reported on Tuesday that St Kilda had entered the race for the former Essendon defender.

While their interest is seen as real, it is understood that the Lions are still at the front of the queue.

Edmund reported on SEN Breakfast on Wednesday morning that the 26-year-old Irishman is likely to land at the Gabba.

“I know Mitch Cleary last night reported that St Kilda had emerged as a late contender for Conor McKenna,” Edmund said.

“I don’t have much visibility on that. That’s obviously the case though, that they’ve got an interest.

“Everything I’m hearing is that Brisbane is the front-runner now, or still at the front of the queue. They were among the most interested as soon as it became clear McKenna wanted to return to resurrect his career in Australia, along with Geelong and Port Adelaide as well.

“But I think it’s going to be Brisbane. That’s where I’ve got my flag in the ground, at the Gabba.

“There’s a link there and a familiar face in Brisbane in the form of Joe Daniher. Those two have remained in touch.

“Whether he gets picked up in the Supplemental Selection Period and if that’s the case it can go on for months, or the rookie draft as well, remains to be seen.

“I think it’s going to be Brisbane.

“The early indication was that when he was coming back he wanted to come back in Melbourne but I don’t think that’s the case.

“I think Brisbane are right in it up to their eyeballs and he’d be a nice pick-up back there.”

McKenna played 79 games for the Bombers between 2015 and 2020 before retiring prematurely from the game.

After spending the past two years playing Gaelic football for Tyrone back in his homeland, McKenna is ready to return to Australia and resume his AFL career.

It appears as though that could be with the Lions, but there is clearly other interest from around the league.

Lions, Roos in pick swap talks as clubs assess draft hands (Callum Twomey, AFL.com.au, 15/11)

BRISBANE and North Melbourne are in discussions on a picks trade that could be made at the start of the opening night of the draft after the window to swap selections closed on Tuesday.

The Roos made the final trade of the post-trade period and pre-draft picks swap window, swapping out their No.43 pick for a future fourth-round pick from Fremantle, which is tied to Hawthorn’s ladder position.

North holds picks No.2, 3 and 23 and will use its fourth and final national pick on father-son prospect Cooper Harvey.

It meant the Roos were looking to trade their picks in the 40s for future selections and keep a late pick to grab Harvey, the son of North Melbourne champion Brent. They were able to do that with Fremantle, while discussions with Brisbane could also see the Roos move out pick 40.

A deal involving pick 40 for a future third-round selection from the Lions as well as a later pick in this year's draft to use on Harvey has been worked through, which would give Brisbane important additional points to match bids on father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions would be able to strike a deal as soon as the draft starts on Monday, November 28 to bolster their points ahead of the bids.

Ex-Bomber set to return, nominates club of choice (Cal Twomey, AFL.com.au, 17/11)

CONOR McKenna is set to return to the AFL with Brisbane after deciding on the Lions as his preferred new home.

The former Bomber met with Brisbane, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Essendon last week while in Australia as he weighed up his club of choice.

The Irishman retired in 2020 after six seasons with the Bombers to return home, where he claimed a championship in the Gaelic competition.

However the talented defender/forward has been keen to get back to Australia and pursue a return to the AFL and resume his career.

Brisbane has been long interested in the 26-year-old, having tried to lure him north while he was at the Bombers.

The club will be able to recruit him via the pre-season supplemental selection period.
