Eh, let's start this thread I guess.

Remember, this thread is for news articles/possibly tweets if half-reputable and discussion posts will be deleted - feel free to chat about the articles in the trade thread. Note that just because I post a story here doesn't mean I don't think it's probably rubbish (Denham, Ralphy, Waldron etc.) but it's worthwhile having a place to keep these stories together.

Also I won't be posting stories that break down to "Ex-AFL media personality thinks the Lions should pick up so-and-so" if there's no evidence that we're actually interested in that player.

Ben Cotton: Statement from Hawks…
The Hawthorn Football Club has recently been made aware of Jack Gunston’s request for a trade.

The club will now assess this request.

However, we are engaged in other trade discussions that remain our priority. These longer term priorities may preclude any discussions with Brisbane progressing.

Jack of all trades: Mystery surrounds a possible Gunston return to Hawthorn (Marc McGowan and Jake Niall, The Age, 13/10)

Jack Gunston’s trade request back to Hawthorn – one year after leaving for Brisbane – blindsided the Hawks and is no certainty to eventuate.

Gunston, who is holidaying overseas, including playing golf in the United States with Hawthorn captain James Sicily and Lions teammate Charlie Cameron, has not spoken to the Hawks about his intention to return.

It is almost an unprecedented move in that sense, and remains shrouded in mystery, especially with Hawthorn indicating that trade targets Mabior Chol and Massimo D’Ambrosio are still their priorities.

Gold Coast remain firm on wanting a future second-round pick in return for Chol, which the Hawks are baulking at to date.

Gunston’s high-profile agent, Tom Petroro, had dialogue with the Hawks recently – alerting them he might want to return to Victoria – and since the trade request became public, a source familiar with the situation told The Age.

This masthead was aware in recent weeks that Gunston was weighing up a return to Victoria, but the situation accelerated in the past few days.

There is a theory Gunston’s trade request could also be about attracting the interest of fellow Victorian clubs, such as Melbourne and Richmond, where ex-Hawthorn assistant Adem Yze is now in charge.

The Demons previously expressed interest in the 32-year-old, who played in the Hawks’ 2013-15 flag three-peat and kicked 410 goals in 211 games.

Gunston kicked 22 goals in 17 games for the Lions this past season, but fell out of favour mid-year and embarked on a mini-pre-season before reclaiming his spot.

A knee injury sidelined him late in the season, and he was unable to force his way into Chris Fagan’s senior side despite being declared available ahead of the preliminary final.

Brisbane have acknowledged Gunston’s trade request, but are “assessing its position”, given he is contracted until the end of next season.

Ex-journalist(?) Mark Stevens: Keep an eye on key forward Brandon Ryan at Hawthorn.

Hawks announced one year extension late in the season.

AFL trade news: Jack Gunston to Hawthorn no sure thing, Suns and Blues to talk Elijah Hollands (Jon Ralph :warning::warning::warning:, Herald Sun, 15/10)

Hawthorn has only limited interest in brokering a trade for Jack Gunston and is adamant young forward Brandon Ryan is off limits to the Lions or any other club.

The Hawks were surprised to be linked to triple premiership player Gunston when he declared an interest in a return to Waverley, with the Lions keen on a swap for 25-year-old Ryan.

Gunston had spoken to coach Chris Fagan about returning to finish his career at the Hawks after moving on last year amid frustration at the club’s off-field issues as he sought a fresh start.

But Hawthorn is deep in discussions on a deal for Mabior Chol and is keen to continue playing Ryan, who the club only recently locked away for another season.

Only if the club landed Gold Coast’s Chol and Essendon’s Massimo D’Ambrosio would the club consider 31-year-old Gunston.

Ryan has played a trio of AFL games but kicked three goals in his second game against Collingwood and looks a real find after being secured in this year’s mid-season draft.

He had over 60 shots at goal from 15 VFL games playing for the Northern Bullants and then Box Hill in the VFL before his senior elevation.

The rangy 200cm left-footer showed impressive movement and a strong set of hands against eventual premiers Collingwood, and could slot into a forward line alongside Mitch Lewis and Mabior Chol.

The Hawks are keen for the Tigers to hand on pick 29 for departing forward Jacob Koschitzke, which they would ontrade in a three-club swap to the Suns for Chol.

But the Tigers are not prepared to hand over 29 for Koschitzke _ they have later picks 50 and 68 _ and the Suns are yet to speak to the Hawks about a three-club trade.

They would want more than pick 50 for Chol and have no confidence the Tigers will give up pick 29.

Hawthorn has already shown that moving on senior midfielders Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell allowed Will Day and Jai Newcombe to flourish.

So while bringing Gunston back to the Hawks smacks of a romantic decision, a club that has been desperate to progress its premiership build might only be robbing Ryan of opportunities.

The Hawks also played Denver Grainger-Barras as a key forward in the final games of the year but might settle him into defence next season.

Brisbane is assessing its options, and while allowing Gunston to leave would clear $500,000 of cap space it would also rob the Lions of valuable depth.

Gunston might not be in the club’s best 22 next year but key tall Tom Fullarton has been traded to the Demons and the Lions need backup if Joe Daniher or Eric Hipwood go down.

The Lions retained Kai Lohmann and Dev Robertson and Cal Ah Chee had a strong finals series for the Lions.

The key AFL trades still to be completed as D-Day approaches (Marc McGowan, Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan, The Age, 15/10)

That news comes as Hawthorn shut down the possibility of key forward Brandon Ryan, a mid-season draftee this year, being traded as part of any potential deal for Jack Gunston, a senior football source confirmed to this masthead.

Gunston wants to return to the Hawks – one year after leaving to play for Brisbane despite Hawthorn hoping to keep him – but they are prioritising completing trades for Mabior Chol and Massimo D’Ambrosio.

It is unclear whether the 32-year-old’s trade wish will eventuate, especially if Hawthorn does not budge on Ryan, the cousin of Fremantle’s star defender Luke Ryan. Gunston is contracted at the Lions for one more season.

Ryan, 25, was in Brisbane in recent days visiting his uncle, and shares the same agent, Vivid Sports’ Tim Hazell, as ex-Lion Tom Fullarton, who was traded to Melbourne for pick 47 on Friday. The 200-centimetre forward kicked four goals in three senior games, including three against Collingwood in round 21.

Ryan was rewarded with a new one-year deal in September, but the Lions are willing to offer him a three-year contract if they can broker a trade for him.

Tom Morris: The @brisbanelions are keen on Brandon Ryan, but not as part of any possible Jack Gunston deal.

The Lions have offered a future second rounder to @HawthornFC, who has not pushed for a trade at all.

Like D'Ambrosio at @essendonfc, in 12 months Ryan could be a free agent.

Progress on Esava deal, Crow hopes fade, Ginni talks ramp up (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 17/10)

HAWKS SET FOR HECTIC FINAL DAY

But an impending move for Ginnivan comes as Hawthorn also attempts to complete its trades for Gold Coast forward Mabior Chol, Essendon defender Massimo D'Ambrosio and Brisbane veteran Jack Gunston.

The club must also send uncontracted forward Jacob Koschitzke to Richmond, while Brisbane has offered a future second-round pick for its former mid-season rookie Brandon Ryan.

The Suns are still keen on a second-round pick in 2024, plus an upgrade on selections this year, in a trade for the contracted Chol. However, the Hawks could gain an additional second-round pick next year if they also agree to part with Ryan.

Hawthorn has been more keen to base its Chol talks around a future third-round pick, having also floated Richmond's future third-round selection as a potential means to unlock the Koschitzke deal. The Tigers have so far only offered a pick in the 60s this year.

There remains the potential for D'Ambrosio to be walked through to the pre-season draft, where the Hawks have the third pick, while the club had been hopeful of assessing its position before entering into Gunston talks. – Riley Beveridge

AFL Trade Period: Follow all the latest news and deals from day seven of the exchange period (Jon Ralph, Josh Barnes and Chris Cavanagh, Herald Sun, 18/10)

Gunston talk could go to wire

Brisbane will be prepared to explore a trade to allow Jack Gunston to move back to Hawthorn despite the Hawks packed agenda on the final day of the trade period.

As the Hawks try to close deals for Jack Ginnivan, Mabior Chol and Massimo D’Ambrosio they have made clear Gunston is at the tail-end of their priorities.

But the Lions will be open to listening to Hawthorn’s offer for Gunston given his determination to return to the club where he won three premierships from 2013-2015.

They will not trade him at any cost given they have already lost key tall Tom Fullarton to Melbourne, aware Gunston is at best in their team and at worst key tall insurance.

The Hawks have suggested they were shocked at Gunston’s trade request and had no warning of his intention to return home.

But given his strong relationship with Sam Mitchell it would be highly unusual if the senior coach was not aware of the player’s intentions.

Gunston has made clear he is not interested in a move to a club other than Hawthorn so would remain at the Lions on a deal of around $500,000 if a trade could not be brokered.

With the Hawks holding firm on not trading 200cm forward Brandon Ryan the Lions might have to accept a later pick or future selection.

They have offered a future second-rounder for Ryan but the Hawks have said they will not trade him.

Gunston has been travelling with a group of premiership teammates and Lions players in America, including Isaac Smith, Luke Hodge, Lachie Neale, Jaeger O’Meara, Zac Bailey and Dan Rich.

At 32 he might not be guaranteed of playing every week in Sam Mitchell’s side but he could provide valuable coaching and experience at Hawthorn.

Callum Twomey: Brisbane is set to trade for Gold Coast's pick 24 once the draft starts next week, while Fremantle is in box seat to trade up its third-round picks for the Suns' pick 38.

WB (for Darcy) & Lions (Ashcroft and Fletcher) both boosted their points haul with early trades those years.
